Tonight's choice of film: The Hunter.

A couple of flaws and bit of a weak ending in comparison to the rest of the film, but I really enjoyed it. Australia really does produce some strong films.

Have you seen Animal Kingdom? That's great.

Snowtown is also 'great' and I put it like that because it's one of those films where after you see it you'll never, ever want to watch it again. It's horrific, but brilliantly made.

Animal Kingdom is actually one of the only Aussie films I've seen and disliked.

I've seen Snowtown and I agree with you completely - great film, but I can't imagine I'd watch it again. But certainly one of the strong films I was referring to.

I currently own Rabbit Proof Fence, Jindabyne and The Proposition - the latter being one of my all time favourite films. What I liked about the Hunter is that Tasmania in itself is a character of the film - it's beautifully shot. And similarly in The Proposition, Australia is very much a character .....the cinematography in that film is outstanding.

Would be keen to hear any other recommendations though.

One of these days I'm going to learn not to dip my hands in boiling water when cooking spaghetti. Today is not that day apparently, but one of these days...

Yeah, about ten minutes into it I was thinking "Fuuuuuck..."

No other recent films come to mind, but have you seen The Dish from about 2000, I think? That's great, and just the kind of film to cheer you up after Snowtown or Rabbit Proof Fence.

And going even further back (although with your interest in war, you've possibly already seen it) Gallipoli is also well worth a watch.

Haha, yeah sorry. I really wanted to like it, but I just didn't connect with the film at all.

Oh yeah I forgot about Gallipoli, I already have that as you correctly guessed!

Haven't seen or even heard of The Dish, but I might try to hunt it down now, thanks.

Well, if you do, hope you enjoy.  If you've got any interest at all in the moon landings, then that helps.

For recent Australian films, give Jindabyne a try. For older Australian films, Wake in Fright is one of the most nightmarish films I've ever seen.

Another vote here for The Dish, and by the same director/writing team, The Castle.

Why is Homer's title now "The Pauline Kael of Empire"? Seems a bit inaccurate...

Because I was mocking him for his refusal to watch a film he disliked more than once, he decided to embrace it.

This evening for dinner I'm having a fillet steak with Diane sauce, chips, mushrooms and parsnips. Even though I've still got a week before I go back into hospital I keep thinking its a 'last supper'!

I specifically asked if I could have steak before next week as I won't be eating properly for another 2-3 weeks.

Thanks.

I go back in a week today, so it's still a wee bit away, but I'm getting more and more scared as the days go on.

Just one of these things I have to accept though. Man, I'm totally salivating at the thought of my meal tonight though!

Sway, you know you're in my thoughts and prayers, for what they're worth.

And now I want steak for tea.

Damn it.

Your choice of analogy (or is it simile?) sells it well (at least if you are doing it properly ).

I'm rarely touched by any non-fiction, be it in print or on film and television, but I can safely say Ricky Gervias' Derek is the one prorgamme that can have me laughing out loud one minute and virtually reduced to tears the next.

I'm a big fan of all of his work but by the same token I understand certain people's gripes with him, but this is a wonderfully-written piece of televsion that hits you unexpectedly.

Wow, it takes a special kind of super-twat to sit on the Question Time panel and make Baroness Warsi seem relatively tolerable.

I just had a look at his official website to work out who he is. Apparently he writes "brilliant books and brilliant articles". I still have no idea who he is but now think he is a bit of a dick.

Apparently he was "chums" with Boris Johnson and David Cameron whilst at University so that explains a lot. Now I think he is a big dick (and not in a complimentary way).

I have just seen the repeat on BBC 2, a further re-evaluation. He is a massive, diseased dick.

It appears I have a doppelganger who works in a pub in Ipswich. I saw a picture of him on a friends mobile. It was scary.
