For me this ranks along side The Thing as John Carpenter's best work. And note to Hollywood NO REMAKE please.

 Not only do they not make films like this anymore... they NEVER made films like this!! It is truly a one off!! One of the best movie mash ups ever. EVER! Has a great cast, fantastic sets and imagary, and the script???? Fuggedabahdit!!
Making a hero out of a complete plonker has been done before. But also making you want to BE that plonker because he is so damned cool is a bit special. Who doesn't want to be Jack?? Anyone? No.

The director/actors commentary is fantastic too.

Now here is a poser for you all....

Kurt Russell as Jack Burton or Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken????

hey Sutty - I'm afraid I gotta disagree with you about the BTILC commenntary; it was a bit of a wasted opportunity as Kurt and John just ramble on about their kids and other stuff and they seem to forget about the actual film! Damn shame as I LOVED the talk tracks they recorded for EFNY and THE THING.
 
And... Plissken RULES.

 My cousin's son and I have a mutual love for this film and one of our favourite lines and the action that follows ALWAYS cracks us up -
 
LO PAN: "It's a good knife. Goodbye Mr. Burton."
 
Nuthin' but FUN, this film! Guaranteed to cheer up the ol' Snake-Blues!

 Havnt seen this in a while.I really enjoyed it as a kid.Must check it out again soon.What was wrong with cinema audiences in the eighties? Films like BTILC and The Thing are great and should have been more successful.

Anyone know whatever happened to the planned sequel?

Jack Burton is a unique hero in American cinema. He breaks all the rules!

ie he's knocked out during the big fight.... he's wearing lipstick when taking on the bad guy.... he is basically a dumb coward.... he's a bit of a liar... and he has the best one liners!

"I was born ready."

"Was that the first guy you every plugged?"
"'Course not!"

But my favourite line is:

"Are you crazy Lopan? Is that your problem?"

One of my all time favs, one that I watch every year, usually on Chinese New Year. Its got great quotes, timeless soundtrack and great characters than still influence till this day, especially LO Pan and Hong's perfermance, its been mimicked in many video games.

Yep, stupidly brave. Certainly not a coward. See how he goes up and puches one of the three storms in the brothel even though he knows what they can do after witnessing the alley fight. But that's why we all like Jack Burton...

 Really hope it doesn't get remade. Mainly because there is no modern day Kurt Russell: perfect at action, comedy and being a bad-ass with great hair: all at the same time.

Nobody fits that description these days.

I was always kind of disappointed that thet never pushed on with a sequel, given how the movie ended. JC and Kurt Russell could have knocked out a couple more of these. We could of had Big Trouble in Little India, Big Trouble in New York, Big Trouble in Great Britain!

But then, Carpenters history with sequels (I'm thinking Escape from LA here) isn't great... Maybe he picked the wrong movie to sequelise?

Well he never had a chance of making sequels to BTILC since the film was a massive box office failure.

 Many of Carpenters movies have under performed at the box office. Some of his best flicks have been disappointing box office wise. The Thing, In The Mouth of Madness, They Live, The Fog, Prince of Darkness... and so on.

I've never understood how so many of his films haven't done so much better commercially. Not that I think Carpenter is too worried, he has a pretty good handle on himself and always seems grounded. I remember (roughly) something he said in an interview once...

"In France i'm an auteur, in Germany, a filmmaker; in Britain, a horror movie director, and in the USA i'm a bum."

For me, on his day, one of the best.

yeah and many of his films are cult classics like Big Trouble In Little China , The Thing and The Fog .i agree please dont do a remake of B.T.I.L.C.
