Thought I'd try and resurrect this thread in honour of this fantastic movie (see my sig for one of my favourite JB quotes).

If any film could have done with a sequal this was it. Just a pity it didn't perform so well at the box office. How would everyone feel about this being re-made? Although I don't think anyone could nail Burton as well as Kurt, who would you all cast in the remake?

Love this classic, on a par with other childhood greats like Stand By Me, The Goonies and The Lost Boys for me....notice the Corey Feldman theme!
Funny, tongue in cheek, and with gret comic performances from its leads!

I love Big Trouble - excellently fun film. And burton/carpenter clearly got some love for it when you listen to the chat track on the DVD.
So quoteable -

When jack's in the Brothel.....
jack: "so what happens, old girls leave, new girls come in?"
Lady of the night: "maybe......take you're tie off please"
Jack: "tell me about it, my wife bought it for me for christmas"

Gracie"what was that!?!"
Jack"6.9 on the rictre scale!"

One of my best mates is a casual film fan but he absolutely worships BIG TROUBLE and everytime we have a drink and he gets a little drunk and we talk about our favourite childhood films he mentions this and says "I can't believe they never made a Part Two!"

Only just rediscovered this flick. Carpenter did some good stuff in the 70's and 80's.

Egg Shen is AWESOME!

EGG: "It will come out no more!"

JACK: "What?! Huh? What'll come out no more?!"

The scene in which Egg uses his powers to fight Lo Pan one-on-one is sick! I LOVE the two magic warriors that appear in the spectrums of light...

That is indeed awesome, it always makes me laugh when Lo-Pan wiggles his thumbs like hes controlling his warrior with an invisible joypad

Fuck it, I'm watching this tonight, been ages since I seen it, Russell is on career best form in this

"Yeah, Lo-Pan, tall guy, wierd clothes, first you see him then you dont!"

"Okay. You people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we're not back by dawn... call the president"

"Which Lo Pan? Little old basket case on wheels or the ten foot tall roadblock"

god I love Jack Burton He could have easily been a bumbling, annoying clown since he flukes his way through most of the movie, but it works brilliantly as he's so funny in it.  Wang is the real badass of the film, his aerial swordfight with Rain is still cool as fuck and Lo-Pan is amazing in it, his little old man persona always makes me laugh "now you see this shit really pisses me off!"

This was a movie that I always used to watch, it's so cheesy but it's fun. There is a lot of humor in it too and some cool fights. I love Kurt Russell's Jack Burton and the 8 foot tall Lopan. The one-liners are great.

Introduced missus fuzzy to BTiLC a couple of years back, and it's now one of her faves - just behind 27 Dresses and PS I Love You... women -whatcha gonna do?

Anyways, we were in SF Chinatown last year, and were gutted that there wasn't an Egg Shen bus tour. You'd think the Americans would cash in on movie references like that. Oh well, maybe the film wasn't as popular over there as it is in my gaff.

You've got her on the right path, ensure she sees The Thing and Escape From New York for more Carpenter/Russell 80's awesomeness, then get her on a steady diet of action movies and you're laughing

There were an awful lot of great films that flopped in the 80s wasn't there? Were the studios not up to speed with the marketing you wonder?

I actually watched this with the Carpenter/Russell commentary the other night and they address this during the opening scenes, apparently Fox just didnt know what to do with it, people didnt get that Russell wasnt an Indiana Jones style asskicking hero, he was basically blundering his way through the movie, Wang is the real hero. The test scores were massive and the preview audiences loved it but they just didnt know how to market it

Awesome, I love that paster, its a Drew Struzan if I'm not mistaken, nobody does 80s fantasy/blockbuster posters like him.

This movie has fucking everything in it,brilliant one liners,  laughs, romance (sorta), a great villain, a greater hero, cool sidekicks, cracking soundtrack, brilliant setpieces, great effects, sorcerors, chinese black magic, kung fu gangs, aerial swordfights, a guy who wears six shooters, guy who can control the elements, a batty old man in a wheelchair and some great creature designs, whats not to like?!

Has there been any momentum for a sequel a la Tron, which also flopped at first but became a huge fan favourite?

There were rumours in the early 90s that a sequel was being scripted, but (obviously) nothing ever came of it. Tron didn't really flop - it just underperformed, still managing to recoup its budget. BTILC, sadly, failed to make even half its outlay back at the box office.

This is why it is a constant feature of my Top 10 movies... utterly brilliant.

Much as I love BTILC, the thing that ticks me off a bit is the wasted opportunity that was the dvd commentary; Carpenter & Russell completely lose track of what's going on on-screen and ramble on about other crap! It's a shame really as their talk-tracks for ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE THING are perfect examples of how informative, humourous and downright charming a commentary can be.
