Good write-up bill. I find that the older I get the more I love this film. It really is the standard by which so many other works of Science Fiction are measured - not just film but TV, comics, computer games - all owe a huge debt to this film. I must add that Vangelis' score is as bill mentions, perfect; so rarely do visuals and score compliment each other so flawlessly.

Thank you Snake Eyes, and i bought the double CD remaster of the soundtrack, and it's awesome on it's own, plus Vangelis not only re mastered it but added more.He went back in to the studio and just re did the whole album, and like Scott decided to add in some more, yet without spoiling the orginal.

Is that available to purchase anywhere? I'd have that on my wall.

How frakkin' cool is this custom-made LEGO 'Spinner'?!

I dunno why but I keep re-watching BLADE RUNNER and the awesome doc 'Dangerous Days'. The film is just too gorgeous to look at. I've never had the chance to see it on the big screen; hope it happens someday. Can you imagine a full, hi-def digital screening? Double-bill with ALIEN?

I've had the DVD set for ages but I've only watched the film itself once, I've not even touched the special features yet...

Took me ages and a couple of viewings to like the film...I don't know why I kept wanting to watch when I initially thought it was fairly average...must've have been the pretty looks anyway gave it a few chances and yeah it's a brilliant film. Love the whole future noir cyberpunk thing, it's just a damn cool film.

The extras are superb. I think this is hands down my favourite blu-ray set.

Snake - any advice about where I could pick up a model spinner?

Unfortunately, no current toy / model manufacturers have the Blade Runner rights. The most recent 'official' version of the spinner was the one that came with the briefcase set (which I have but have not opened):

Many years ago, just after the film's original release, ERTL released a set of cars but they weren't very good.

There are some unofficial versions that show up on eBay once in a while but they're just crappy 'garage kits' that have to be painted and assembled. Just keep checking eBay Rgirv - you may get lucky and snare one of the briefcase models. Personally, I'd be willing to fork out a hefty price for that LEGO model!

Cheers! I am surprised that there aren't many models from BR. You would have expected some sort of licensed stuff to have come out.

Yeah, I'm, surprised by that too. But then it's also kinda cool that the market is not completely saturated by BR merchandise. Still, I think a decent spinner model would be cool.

There are (or were) loads of very good custom kits of spinners, Deckard's gun and the VK machine doing the rounds in the 90s at most large collectors fares. But they always were at a premium cost wise and always required the purchaser to build and paint them, or extra folding green to get them done professionally. One stallholder who was at every single Memorabilia show I went to at the NEC for five or so years did some particularly amazing work, but it generally cost several hundred at least. His life-size exact replicas of Deckard's gun were, if memory serves, 500 for the kit, 750 built but not painted, 1000 painted and 1500 for the whole thing completed on a lovely hand made presentation stand.

But, yeah, as far as official stuff goes - it wasn't the type of film and never did the business to warrant anything like a proper merchandise line (although I seem to remember kiddies lunchboxes in the mid to late 80s, which was weird).

I have the 2-issue Marvel Comics Adaptation and a few other bits n' bobs. I think that Warners weren't sure how to market the film upon it's initial release; perhaps they thought it was gonna be a 'Star Wars'-type film just 'cos Harrison was in it.

btw - great_badir, I remember those custom kits of the 90's but I wasn't too keen on them.

Just watched it for the first time in a year or so. Man this film will never get old. The cinematography is outstanding.

The visual effects, production design and Vangelis' score - it all makes this film truly timeless. I wish there were more science fiction films like this; probably the closest anyone has come to a film this awesome was Proyas' DARK CITY.

I am just in from the pub, and a bit pissed but bbc2 have blade runner on and I find myself sucked in yet again.

Is it the final cut?

I believe it is, yes. Followed by a shorter version of Dangerous Days, I'm told.

Oh wow - so it is! Well, I've been watching the 2-disc blu-ray quite a bit lately. Problem is, I ordered the 5-disc U.S. version, it arrived but the sodding case was all cracked to s**t! I have the nice 'Voight-Kampf' briefcase set but that's gonna stay sealed!

Dangerous days rocks. Love the way they dont hold back, but just let everything, warts and all, hang out. Its a beautifully put together documentary as well. They even get ol grumpy hole ford to contribute as well.

Watched the Final Cut again, noticed a few things that the remaster highlights, details that I thought were new but actually just didnt show before as much.

Still need to watch the making of, have the tin set but not the briefcase.

The contents on the dvds are the same in the briefcase as the tin, isnt that the case?

Possibly, outside of alien quadroligy, the best set of extras in dvd history in my humble opinion.

I have the tin set too. I've still not sat through all of it. I've not actually watched the original version yet either. Though by all accounts I'm not missing anything.

I have watched everything except the workprint.

I dont mind the original version. I have a lot more affection for the voiceover than most though the definitive version does not include it.

Actually looking at the briefcase it looks like a few bigger items are not included in the normal tin - there is a model Spinner (RGirvan44) and a paper Unicorn by the looks of it. Not sure what the square box at the right corner of the case is though:

Edit: oh it's just the box for the disks shown from different angles.

Why did this film cause controversy when it came out?

The only 'controversy' may be that once Deckard's narration and the 'happy ending' had been removed as well as the addition of the 'Unicorn Dream' sequence for the 1992 Director's Cut, it presented fans with a different version of the film. Not controversial upon it's initial 1982 release.
