Homophobic comment no? My friend since I was 4 is gay, and he doesn't wear make-up....

IF this pic turns out to be fake, then it's a good one and I'll hold my hands up. But so far all Total 'chip on their shoulder about Empire' Film have said is that it's fake because of the URL?? Has anyone stopped to think -

A. The believeinharveydenttoo.com url doesn't have Warner Brothers in the address as it's supposed to be a hacked website?
B. The playing-cards trick that was done in a comic-store PLUS this website would have to have been the quickest hoax campaign EVER initiated (I mean, it happened almost at the same time as the FIRST Website was up!)
C. Those people saying, as Total Film are doing, that the campaing MUST be fake because it only involved ONE comic store is the biggest load of nonsense I've ever heard! Viral marketing campains are just that, a VIRUS. They plant card's in ONE store, that store gets onto the net, the story spreads and within days it's all over the internet fan sites. Is it just me or is that actually a pretty succesful viral campaign?

Why would they need to bombard every comic book store in Hollywood to get some publicity? IF it's a real image and website, it's certainly worked as the fuss and buzz it's causing is publicity the film makers could only dream of getting!

IF it's fake, Ill hold my hands up, but Total Films reasons for it being so are ridiculous!

Go check out the site again. The picture's gone, but there's a new message there, possibly about when we'll get our next sighting of the Joker. I've gotta admit, I've never actually been creeped out just by a film's advertising campaign before, but man, the Joker is already one scary bastard.

Plus: Yes it may still be pretty early, but if you consider that The Dark Knight is coming out next year and that in the past other movie francises have had hype building screen grabs or photos (even teaser trailers) out way before their release date.

Heres hoping Chritopher Nolan and Co. keep up the great work.

point taken, but i've never agreed with hype, and these days hype is started as soon as possible, tho its great to see these pics,by the time the film comes out a:there won't be much left to find out when you go see the film, and b:you'll be sick of hearing about it.

although i personally think this Joker pic looks great and i'm glad/releaved they've gone in that direction with his look,i also wish they'd kept it under wraps at least until release of the movie,so your getting your head around the look of him as you see the film, instead now, everyone will have a pre-concieved idea of what to expect from the movie, which may be totaly different and therefore possibly dissapointing.

Looks nothing like any Batman comic ever. Not Kane or Finger's version, not Miller's not Bolland's, not Adams or Marshall Rogers.

Are Kane, Finger, Miller, Bolland, Adams or Marshall Rogers making The Dark Knight? No, Christopher Nolan is and fair play to him for wanting to create his own style. 300 and Sin City were rubbish because they were carbon copies of the comics and failed to create their own distinctive style.

Didn't see this up on here..I'm not a huge comic Book fan. So I can just appreciate it for what it is..And i think they've fuckin nailed it..No-one really wanted to see the Cartoon version in the Comic's..It just wouldn't of worked for the Movies Nolan is making..And all you fanboys who are dissing it, I've got the solution. Stick to the Comics, and don't watch the Movie....Simple!!!

I totally agree with this. I don't get why you can list all these people who have created their own versions of the character and then feel it's terrible for Nolan to be doing the same thing. This is how classic characters continue to be entertaining and find new audiences, by people reimagining them to fit their vision of the story. The reason Nolan's Batman is so much better than Sin City or 300 is because he takes inspiration from Miller's style but doesn't go to such slavish devotion as to replicate his incredibly superficial characters.

PS I really hope this picture is real, if not then it's definitely the fake closest to how the character should be. Certainly an elaborate viral campaign that you don't know is real or not is the perfect way to advertise this character. It's either a big joke or a pretty big deal and vaguely creepy either way.

I'm a big fan of Batman (from movies and animated series, mostly), I loved Batman Begins, and I love Chris Nolan's films (Memento and The Prestige just rocked)...but I don't really like this very much at all. I obviously can't really pass judgement until I've seen him in action, the way he moves, talks, how he's written etc., but this my first impression is that this just looks like Heath Ledger with some flour on his face and a botched lipstick job, with the scarring adding nothing other than a bit of "ick" factor and the black eyes merely making his face look inexpressive.

What concerns me most though is that he's not smiling. This is the debut picture of the new Joker, and he hasn't even got a hint of a smile? For me, a lot of what makes Joker interesting is that he's the opposite of dour, brooding but righteous Batman; he's a flamboyant, larger-than-life and totally amoral psycho, with a livewire personality and a "taste for the theatrical", as Gordon said at the end of Begins, and it's that combination of insane mirth and vicious evil that makes him so unique, unsettling and entertaining to watch. This pic makes the new Joker look gloomy and blank, which defeats the point of the character; it's like having an unintelligent Riddler, a big fat heffer of a Catwoman, or a Two-Face that ignores his coin (oh, wait, Joel Schumacher already did that ).

I hope I'm just being presumptious; I probably am, given the track record of Nolan and his Bat-crew, but right now I wouldn't be too upset if this did turn out to be a fake...

Thank Christ!! Thought I was imagining this!!!
Tomorrow's headline; "Scorsese possibly may be about to potentially direct a film!!! Perhaps....."
Ah I have nowt against TF- I buy it every month- but not only did they drop the ball on this one, they punctured it, threw it over the fence to the scary old neighbour's house, where his maniacal hound proceeded to shred it with his incisors before the old man picked it up and wiped it on.....

......oh. I seem to have got carried away.....!

Taken from TF news today....

It’s still not official – but only a victim of the Joker’s idiot-gas would continue to claim the Heath Ledger Joker picture’s a fake.

Instead, it’s become clear that the shot is part of one of the most brilliant marketing campaigns we’ve seen in a long time.

Last night, the Joker image was taken down, replaced with a ‘Page not found’ error, which, usually, would be confirmation that the image wasn’t supposed to be there.

But closer inspection revealed that the page was covered in hidden ‘Ha Ha Has’ – with the phrase ‘I’ll see you in December,’ buried in the text.

That, and the fact that the domain name seeyouindecember was registered yesterday by a marketing company - 42 Entertainment - notorious for its edgy campaigns, seems to suggest that the page is part of the Dark Knight hype machine; which is already looking to eclipse Begins' low-key effort.

We take our Bat-hats off to 42 Entertainment - this stunt is so perfectly in-tune with the Joker’s character, it fooled even us. And hey, Joker’s tricked Bats himself on more than one occasion, so we don’t feel too bad.

Anyway, we don’t know about you, but we can’t wait for December, when we’ll surely get to see Heath Ledger’s Joker, for real, in what will be one of the most eagerly anticipated teaser trailers of the decade. It's rumoured to be attached to either The Golden Compass, or I Am Legend, both big Warner Brothers flicks out in December. Either way, we'll be first in the queue

Has anyone found the MySpace page about the two Harvey Dent campaigns?  Apparently, "The Joker" has set up a blog under the alias "Mr. Happy"...

But honestly, how creepy is the advertising lol!  I can't wait !

The photo is just a teaser...they don't want us to see Joker in all his glory until nearer release time (December by the sound of things). That's why he isn't smiling, and why we can't see the green hair or the crazy eyes.

you fucking idiot! You're a self confessed fan of Batman 'from movies and animated series, mostly', you realise that this means nothing you have to say or think about Batman has any relevance or bearing in any argument?

Next time you want to comment on Batman make sure you've got something to say, and some comics under your belt.

Don't like it. There was no radical cosmetic overhaul of Batman so why change the iconic look of The Joker. I'm all for making him more like he was as originally conceived by Bob Kane, & Alan Moore's interpretation in The Killing Joke but he just looks like some bloke with a bit of facepaint & drunkenly applied lipstick.

Maybe you're right, but then again you're wrong.
They didn't change Batman's origonal appearance? Hmm I must have missed the grey lycra and the purple gloves, icase you didn't notice batman wasn't origonally decked out in a black kevlar bodysuit.
Or was Batman Begins your first encounter with the characters?

Didn't Nolan and co meet with the original creators? I'm sure they'll have some of the cloownish elements in it. This is just a a teaser after all, it almost looks like a picture taken of a corpse, this could just be after the difigurement or bleaching. Also on one of the set reports on Batman on Film one of the spies said Ledger was acting comletely crazy in the bank scene.

Yes but that's marketing. You don't give too much away early on. They won't show a full-on Joker smiling away now as then there is no suprise when the movie comes out, and there is your main image right there gone too soon. Keep more to reveal later and you keep people interested. Good marketing.

I like the new picture of Joker, a very grotesque, nightmarish style that suits the character well. It lends the notion to me, that this will be as far a departure from Nicholson's scenery-chomping buffoon as possible. I also agree with Pablohoolio that even if the pic is fake, it's priceless in regards to publicity.
Also, every huge Batman fan should keep an eye on the current Batman Confidential comic series, a future issue will contain a back story for Joker.

To me, this image combined with the viral campaign and website jokes, shows two things -

1. Nolan is getting the ecentric Joker personality exactly right (defacing Dent's website with manic scribbles and leaving Joker cards around!) and leaving hidden messages basically laughing at Dent and us. The website Jokes seem like he's challenging Dent to come get him, that Dent is a joke.
2. That Nolan is also thinking about what the Joker does for a living i.e. Armed robberies, and has incorporated that into his appearance.

People forget that the Joker is a ganster. An armed robber and killer. He kills. He plays jokes. He is manic and ecentric but scarily so because he combines his Jokes with killing, making him seem utterly psychotic. If we don't get an origin story (chemical bath) in TDK who cares? If the Joker has pale skin and puts the red paint on his smile to be Joker like, great! It's perfectly in keeping with his insane behaviour.

What annoys me about the people who are complaining at BOF is that what did they expect from Nolan's take on Batman? They loved Begins and then can't see why the Joker has a scarred mouth? I wasn't expecting anything different, don't know about them. One final thing, look at his mouth on the left, the way the scar runs upwards. Now imagine how thats going to look when Ledger gives it a big grin??!

*shivers*
