I always thought that this is the sort of thing that magazines like mojo or classic rock do when there are no decent records out this month. Pick up something old and put it on the cover again. Think about it for a minute, whether its the june or july issue, what does it say about the state of movies in 2007 that in the height of the popcorn movie season, there are no new films that are worth putting on the front cover of empire. 30 covers for 30 years tells you that, yes, star wars is still awesome, (sign me up for a Jawa one with a 'Dink, Dink, Utini, it's 30 years of Star Wars' tagline) but also that there is nothing out in the cinemas at the moment which will get close to the same treatment in 30 years time, because it's not even getting the respect of a front cover now. 2007 is proving to be a rubbish year for movies. Nothing. I mean there are alot of big name films about to arrive, but you can't deny starwars' huge influence on the cinematic landscape Definitely don't deny that Star Wars has had a massive impact on the cinematic landscape. I am a huge fan. However, as I understand it, what goes on the cover is about what attracts the most sales, and it says something about the state of films in 2007 that at the time of year when films are meant to be at their biggest and best, there is nothing that is coming out in June or July that will get people excited enough about the film to buy a magazine and read about it. I can understand when they tribute Indiana Jones in October, because it's one of the quietest movie months of the year, but this is supposed to be high season and there's nothing to talk about. I also think that part of this is that Empire have shot their bolt a bit to cover up for previous quiet months with things like their special edition Fab 4 and Transformers covers. In previous years, the quiet months would get a film star cover, like a clooney or a cruise, but this hasn't happened in the last 6 months, partly because 2007 is a rubbish year for films, (but also probably because of market forces)
