Stretching the initial Hobbit story over three installments is a decision that deserves to be treated with caution. This is not to say that PJ and his team won't be able to find enough material to produce an impressive full 12-hour trilogy of prequels (GOD! Lucas did ruin that concept forever); such material does exist in the last chapter of The Silmarillion, in Unfinished Tales, in the Appendices of the LotR, and some other minor sources and works of Tolkien, access to which is made possible as long as the characters appearing in The Hobbit also come into play in the stories contained therein.

The material I just cited is quite different to that in the LotR, in that it's mostly narrative and to a far lesser degree descriptive. In the case of the LotR, the novels will go on for pages and pages describing how the scenery would look, but all this would translate into a single picture in the movies. Still, the LotR novels did have a great number of subplots and events / incidents that didn't find their way into the films, and in the long run a lot got seriously modified. On the other hand, the stories in the three works are fragmentary in nature and give a strong sense of summary. This must change things for PJ, as his task won't be to condense a vast story and skip any redundant aspects thereto (like he did in the LotR trilogy) but to infer from notes and create new material to fill in the gaps and connect the dots, but still stays true to the feeling of Middle-earth.

I expect impressive things to take centre stage in the films, but also I feel a mild sense of concern for the more clildish material that is to be found in The Hobbit. There's always going to be room for complaints, either from those looking forward to seeing a set of films that closely adheres to the novel's original intention (whatever that may be) or from those hoping for a sequel/prequel that's truer to the original trilogy's ambience.

Then again I might be wrong altogether and what I can see for the future into my palantir is just rubbish.

Mary Tyler Moore > Orlando Bloom. I know that's completely unrelated, but I have Dick Van Dyke on. Laura Petrie is one of my dream women.

So...The Hobbit's almost here. I thought I'd post a little Hobbit-related quiz tonight just for the sheer geeky fun of it.

When Gandalf shows up at Bag End, what colour hat and scarf does he have on?

The winner will probably win international acclaim.

Just be thankful Paul didn't start it.

You might get some ED converts if the remake goes ahead though.

I wonder if there's going to be a special screening in Isengard? I'd like to know if they're taking The Hobbit to Isengard.

DUDES!

(And dudettes)

I'm booking tickets to see The Hobbit on 3D Imax this Friday (stupid work is preventing me getting to see it any sooner). Made me think of this thread. I'm really looking forward to the film, although do have some concerns about how all three will hold up together (the stretching of The Hobbit plus extras to three films is at 'wait and see' status for me).

Such memories from this thread though! It probably sounds sad, but I was reading over the past few pages (which span a year! ) and actually got a kick out of seeing my as part of Gimli's quote. I used to go here!

One for the ringers - uber-cool t-shirt site Threadless.com have a fantastic new shirt on sale: http://www.threadless.com/product/2293/There_and_Back_Again
It's selling out way too fast, so if you want one, go and claim one!

Holy shit - that's fantastic!! I love the Tube map, I love LOTR - it's like they made a t-shirt for the inside of my brain!!

I'm now the proud owner of this!

And I have to admit, Rhubarb's comment made me laugh:

quote:

I wish they had just got on the tube in those films.

Ah, banter!

I got a friend of mine to watch Army of Darkness last week actually (don't worry, he's a true Ringer already, no risk of defection!). He never knew all the Evil Dead films though, and was blown away by how many references are in World of Warcraft (which he plays a lot). He even had a boomstick! So, Evil Dead's not totally crap - can open the eyes of a geek!

So who else has seen The Hobbit? What do we think? (couldn't be arsed visiting the actual review thread!)
