Stretching the initial Hobbit story over three installments is a decision that deserves to be treated with caution. This is not to say that PJ and his team won't be able to find enough material to produce an impressive full 12-hour trilogy of prequels (GOD! Lucas did ruin that concept forever); such material does exist in the last chapter of The Silmarillion, in Unfinished Tales, in the Appendices of the LotR, and some other minor sources and works of Tolkien, access to which is made possible as long as the characters appearing in The Hobbit also come into play in the stories contained therein. The material I just cited is quite different to that in the LotR, in that it's mostly narrative and to a far lesser degree descriptive. In the case of the LotR, the novels will go on for pages and pages describing how the scenery would look, but all this would translate into a single picture in the movies. Still, the LotR novels did have a great number of subplots and events / incidents that didn't find their way into the films, and in the long run a lot got seriously modified. On the other hand, the stories in the three works are fragmentary in nature and give a strong sense of summary. This must change things for PJ, as his task won't be to condense a vast story and skip any redundant aspects thereto (like he did in the LotR trilogy) but to infer from notes and create new material to fill in the gaps and connect the dots, but still stays true to the feeling of Middle-earth. I expect impressive things to take centre stage in the films, but also I feel a mild sense of concern for the more clildish material that is to be found in The Hobbit. There's always going to be room for complaints, either from those looking forward to seeing a set of films that closely adheres to the novel's original intention (whatever that may be) or from those hoping for a sequel/prequel that's truer to the original trilogy's ambience. Then again I might be wrong altogether and what I can see for the future into my palantir is just rubbish.
