Surely it's LotR that's homophobic for keeping the true nature of Frodo and Sam's master/submissive relationship in the background?

Middle Earth is also the most racist place in literature or film. Just look at all that segregation

Everyone wants at Frodo's ring but no one ever admits it for fear of what others will think.

Frodo is promiscuous as he wants to give his ring away.

What's missing is the following scene where Frodo starts to slowly push him to his knees.

Does anyone here remember a rather great thread from the orange forum that was all about just how racist the films are?

Almost three months since the last post!

In a (probably futile) attempt to liven up this thread, any thoughts as to which of THESE I should get?

I'm always partial to a subtle movie t-shirt, so I think the white hand of saruman is a pretty cool tee. Although Eye of Sauron is wicked as well.

Those are both on a shortlist But I think I must get one that features my favourite film scene of all time, the Balrog.

Speaking of which, I have this lovely D&D miniature of a Balor, which is, I suppose, the equivalent of the Balrog, looking all meancing, whip and sword in either hand and wreathed in flame.

On another note, there's something about the entire Moria sequence that sets it apart; it probably tops my list of favourite moments. Right from the point when the Fellowship sets eyes on the Walls of Moria (the scene resonates with Howard Shore's splendid score), till the escape of the Fellowship's surviving members. In a sense, Moria is a universe of its own among the rest of the places in Middle-earth, and the film has captured this, in my appreciation.

And if you think about it, the FotR is about showing how fragmented Middle-earth is at the time: the Shire, set apart from the rest of the world, oblivious to what is going on outside its boundaries, consumed in its own ale-brewing and pipe-weed-smoking affairs; Rivendell, an elven "island" amidst a see of menacing waves that threaten to devour the last homely place west of the Mountains; Moria, a place of deep shadow and ancient dread, a long forgotten realm of the Dwarves, echoing hazards from the First Era; Lorien, a veritable time machine, a pocket realm within the rest of Middle-earth, where even time does not hold sway; and so on.

And, lest I forget -- one for our elusive deadite friends -- there's a great deal of green in the films as well. And walking.

That post makes me happy for many reasons. First, it's by Inky. Second, it's in this thread (with The Hobbit just months away, this thread should be crazy busy. Oh, how times change). Third, it mentions the great Howard Shore. Fourth, it shows an obvious love for the best film ever made. And lastly, I too would have Moria as my favourite film sequence. So, all in all, a winner!

I like how the Ringers post in here about Hobbit excitement, but the Deadites aren't too keen on mentioning the new Evil Dead film

It's not an Evil Dead film. It's a remake, without Sir Bruce of Campbell and, worse still, has a female lead. When Evil Dead 4 is on the verge of being released, then we'll talk Gimli...

I don't see an Evil Dead film with a female lead and without Campbell as a bad thing necessarily. It really depends on how the material is executed.

Then again, I'm not really too bothered about remakes in general.

Love that poster Inky, but nothing so far has quite excited me as much as that massive banner. I want to paper my house with that.

I didn't know it was a remake! Now I understand why it's all quiet on the Deadite front.

Surely it's LotR that's homophobic for keeping the true nature of Frodo and Sam's master/submissive relationship in the background?

Fifty Shades of (Gandalf the) Grey?

So what do the other ringers think about the Hobbit's potential stretching out to a trilogy?  Spreading it too thin?  Or is more of PJ's vision of Middle Earth always a good thing?  In all honesty I'm tending towards the former, though if the intention is to fill the story between Bilbo's return to the Shire and his eleventy-first birthday, then the prospect of seeing something like the fall of Moria or the battle against Umbar might just sway me towards the trilogy idea.  However, inclusion of these strands does sort of stretch the whole "based on The Hobbit" concept...

The more Middle Earth the better!

I think part of the problem is that nobody is still entirely certain of exactly what is being included in these two films that isn't purely The Hobbit story. I've read a few diatribes that basically say it's gonna be half an hour of Bilbo and the rest will come from PJ's imagination. If there's enough actual material that they can actually stretch to three films, and for the sake of ease they're calling them The Hobbit and not The Hobbit Plus Other Bits of The Last 60 Years of Middle Earth That Led to Events in The Lord of The Rings, I'll be happy to see what they can come up with.
