Anyone else going to tune into "Prizefighter" tonight???

Basically it's 8 heavyweights in a one night tournament.
4 first round fights, 2 semi's and a final, with the winner taking home £25k.
Each fight is just 3 rounds so it should be all out fury.
Of course, it could be taxing on the fighters who make the final - it would be their 3rd fight of the night, albeit short ones.
But sould someone pick up a nasty cut and go through to the next stage, I guess it gives their opponent something to target.

Dont get it Bob !?!? OK lets try a name i threw into the ring before; Jeff Lacy . A fighter at the top of his game , unbeaten 23-0 with 17 by KO , called by some a Super - Middleweight Tyson . This meant nothing to Joe who beat the guy up for 12 out of 12 rounds , but Lacy wasnt a fighter that had "lost his edge".
Neither was Kessler another name id mentioned , in that fight there were 3 World Titles at stake , 2 of them Kesslers . But i suppose nothing World class there either .
Joe will beat Hopkins next week ......but then i suppose he will have lost his edge too .

Lacey and Kessler were definitely live opponents although Lacey was clearly overhyped and got found out against Calzaghe.There's little doubt that Calzaghe has been the top man at 168 for quite a while but unfortunately for him in terms of his legacy the division has hardly been overflowing with talent in recent years and he clearly never pushed himself towards the bigger fights that were possible.Hopkins is most definitely on the slide but he knows enough to make it difficult for anybody.I'd still be very surprised if Calzaghe doesn't beat him simply through workrate.

Anybody see the welterweight fights from the weekend ? Rematch between Kermit Cintron and Tony Margarito that went pretty much the same way as the first and total mismatch between Miguel Cotto and Alfonso Gomez.Cotto-Margarito unification fight scheduled for 26th June is a potential fight of the year,great to see that some of top fighters at this weight are willing to face each other,pity Mayweather is unwilling to get in the ring with either.

It was a bit dire , and to make it worse Tarver will probably lose to the first half decent fighter he faces next .

Looking forward to the fight, gonna nip down the pub with my mates ealier in the night, so hopefully i dont fall asleep in a drunken state before the fight starts!

I can see Calzaghe winning on points...hopefully the ref comes down on Hopkins if he tries his usual dirty tricks.

I just re-watched some of last weekends fight,  Woods was poor against Tarver, he just never got going.
Clintron - Margarito was a decent fight, im really looking forward to Margarito vs Cotto now.
Gomez was out-classed by Cotto last weekend, it was a good decision by the doctor to pull out Gomez, as he could of been really hurt.
I felt sorry for Johnson againt Dawson, i think he won that fight and was unlucky with the decesion.

I'm a complete wuss. I can't watch the fight live as I am far too nervous. I'll watch it if Joe wins otherwise I'll pretend it never happened.

I hope he puts a stop to the British fighters going to America and getting owned (Hatton, Woods, Harriso....ok, maybe the first two).

I watched Inside Sport on Monday and Hopkins seemed an ok guy.

Absolutely,can't see how this can fail to be an exciting fight.Normally I'd back Cotto against anyone he just gets better and better but at the moment it looks like a pick 'em fight,the loss to Paul Williams really seems to have put a fire back in Margarito's belly.Already been some great fights this year and with fights like this lined up,the resurgence that boxing went through last year looks set to continue.

Didn't see the fight but Glen Johnson's had more than his fair share of close decisions go against him.It's a shame for him he comes across as a nice guy and by all accounts he boxed really well against Dawson.

They might have a go at Calzaghe for usually fighting in his backyard, but rather than and the fight is on at around 11ish for me than he fight in Vegas and it be in the wee small hours our time.

For me its a long time since the glory years of boxing when Sugar Ray Leonard, Duran, Hagler and Hearns were fighting each other, but I loved watching Calzaghe give Lacey a boxing lesson 3 years ago so I'll have a nap and try to watch this later.

The time when Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran were boxing was before my time. But i recently watched the 'Fabulous 4' DVD, whcih shows there rivalry.
It looked a great time for boxing and i wished i could of seen it live.
I like watching old Duran fights and Hagler is also a favourite of mine.

 Calzaghe got away with one there.

He hardly tagged Hopkins at all, never fought his fight.

He kept ploughing forward but that shouldn't be enough to win a fight. Hopkins had the better punches, he was clever and dirty.

Thon ref is a fecking clown. Steve Bunce does my nut - his voice is so grating.

P.S. Audley is utter mince. Thon guy he was fighting was terrible and still stung him once.

I'd expect so, but I don't think this fight will have done a lot for Calzaghe's stock in the US. 

As noted by a poster above, all he won by was being the one going forwards and also having the busier workrate.  But he never looked like he was going to hurt Hopkins and certainly didn't put on the show of boxing that he can give.

Hopkins was no better either, coming in with the head far too often and complete histrionics on a couple of low blows that were slaps rather than punches.  Only time the fight looked like kicking off was at the end when the ref waved away one of the low blows. 

I've got to also say that I'm pretty pissed about the number of ad breaks Setanta ran during the match when its a subscription event.

Yeah same, as soon as he went down i suddenly got depressed and thought what the fuck is this?? Hatton, Woods and now this shit from Calzaghe?! This all went through my mind the second it happened. I'm so bloody cynical.

Hopkins claims he won the fight but "people will think different" or some shit like that. No grace to that man in the build up to the fight, during the fight or even afterwards.
I mean think about it...even Mayweather had the good grace to show Hatton some respect after the fight (admittedly Floyd didn't lose but still...).

It was never that wide but i gave it to Joe . Have to say Hopkins looked great for his age and deserved an Oscar for his "acting" in rounds 10 and 11 . The knockdown in the first looked to me like it had a lot to do with Hopkins momentum moving forward - not a push , but almost - , yeah a good right hand landed but Joe may not have gone down but for the momentum . Would like to see a rematch .

It was one of those fights with several tight rounds where personal preference comes into it,so it could go either way.After a few rounds Calzaghe came into it and started outworking Hopkins like we all thought he would but I've still got the same problem with Calzaghe I've had from day one.I'm always going to prefer someone countering him with a couple of clean shots over his flurries of slapping arm punches.
It was a more interesting fight than I expected but I still wouldn't care to see a rematch,I'd happily see Hopkins hang up his gloves.Like I said above he's such an experienced,cagey fighter he can give anyone an awkward night but he's got little or nothing to offer other than that now.Same goes for De La Hoya is anybody remotely interested in his fight with Steve Forbes ? Even his rematch with Mayweather doesn't do anything for me,there are plenty fights I'd rather see Mayweather in..Both he and Hopkins were once great fighters but are now just trying to cash in on name value alone.

There's only one reasonably big money fight out there for him and that's Roy Jones.It's not the megafight he's talking about but it's probably his only option for a PPV fight at 175 lbs in America and Jones is damaged goods.Kelly Pavlik has also been mention,presumably it would mean Calzaghe going back down to 168 and Pavlik moving up.Just not sure how big a draw that would be and at this stage of Jones' career I'd rate Pavlik a more dangerous opponent.

Caught the De La Hoya - Forbes fight last night. De La Hoya looked ok (since it was his first fight in awhile) and won easily on points.
He will have to step it up though if the Mayweather re-match goes ahead.
