I certainly agrre with Rhubarb's suggestion of Danny Boyle. Sure, he may not have produced as many other films as the others on the list, but his output is widely varied in content and style (shallow grave to sunshine via family fare such as millions) so he has gained a vast audience.
I'd also like to suggest Guillermo del Toro (who's certainly in the spotlight right now with Hellboy II, The Hobbit and possibly Harry Potter 7) who has likewise produced a vastly varied body of work.
Plus Steven Spielberg, Peter Weir, Sergio Leone (apologies as these are not original suggestions, i'm just adding my opinion.)

the problem I see with a lot of the classic directors is that if a list of 5 films was drawn up to go and see and pass judgement on, then for various reasons, only a small cross section of empire forumites would be able to join in.

Although some people have a lesser knowledge than others, it doesnt make their opinions any less worthy. By picking a director who might have been at their height in the 50's, for example, many newbies would not sit through or even have access to the films lsited.

I personally agree with most of the names on the list but I feel that you have to keep it open to more readily available catalogues of work and therefore would forward these directors for consideration (my faves for consideration hgihlighted):

Hitchcock
Tony Scott
John Woo
Chris Nolan
Sam Raimi
John McTiernan
Joel Schumacher
William Friedkin
George Lucas (for a laugh at the riots it would cause)

clint eastwood
krzysztof kieslowski
gore verbinski
tim burton
david lean
george lucas (would be good to talk about him in view of his potential before Star Wars)

Where in the magazine did the dvd club used to be ? And what was it ? I've got magazines from Sept. 2002 and I can't find it .
Is it just about the directors ? Or the director's output on dvd ?

As this section appears to have been dropped from the magazine we (the Mods) thought it'd be quite a nice idea if we could carry it on. So, if you'd like to nominate a new director (or two) then we'll create a new thread for them periodically.

Periodically is right. There hasn't been a new thread since 2007, and it isn't for the lack of some excellent suggestions from the people who have contributed to this thread.
How about it?
