The women in Sin City were absolutely gorgeous (Alexis Bledel!) in black and white with the odd dash of colour, so I'll expect she'll blow my mind in The Spirit!

Looking at her recent films, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Spirit, He's Just Not That Into You, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the thing that really stands out, apart from how none of them are as good as you might have hoped for, is that they are that rare thing in major Hollywood movies, films that are sold on the basis of their female stars rather than male ones. In those four films alone, she has starred alongside many of the leading actresses around, both young up and coming stars and established names. Perhaps what this indicates is not that Scarlett is making poor choices of films, but that there are barely any decent movies out there which allow top actresses to work together, very few female ensembles that can match up to the success of predominantly male groups like Ocean's Eleven, Reservoir Dogs etc.

I think she's a very limited actress, and certainly overhyped. Only once have I thought she was anything other than poor (Lost in Translation), in everything else she seems incapable of really showing any emotion.

And as for looks, smoking body but her face is weird. Looks like she has a permanent peanut allergy or cold or something.

As a straight woman, I can safely say that Scarlett is very beautiful indeed.
As a film lover and semi-professional critic, I don't find her very talented. She's okay, but bland.
She does have the potential, but she's made lots of rather poor choices. I mean, Black Dahlia? The Other Boleyn Girl? Come on Scarlett...
I can't think of a recent good film she's been in...

Scarlett may not be my favourite actress out there, but I like her anyway. Lost In Translation, comes instantly to my mind - where she does a marvelous performance. The chemistry between her and Murray is just perfect! Not seen that many more films with her, to be honest. I am stunned. But she also did rather well as Enid's friend Rebecca in Ghost World. So she definately have acting talent, no doubt about it. And yes, she look very good too. Plus, she's young and fresh. I absolutely think she deserves all the hype, and wish her good luck in her career. I'm looking forward to see more of this lady, I can tell you that.

Wise words.

The Man Who Wasn't There,
Lost In Translation,
Ghost World (one of the best comic book adaptaions in my eyes),
Girl With A Pearl Earring
... all great in my opinion!
I think she does deserve the hype, she certainly tries different roles and seems to have an open mind, hey she's a New Yorker!
Got a good sense of humour by the looks of things as well, she presented Saturday Night Live and was game for a laugh with much gusto.
Plus she's got a directorial contribution to "New York I Love You" which should be interesting to see.

The gals got smarts, if you ask me.

She just pouts her way through The Other Boleyn Girl
But tries to pull off the 'action-heroine' thing in The Island...
Hmm.......
Shes better than most younger actresses out there today (I guess)

I find her amazingly attractive but her cinematic career is far from glittering.

Stunning woman, in my opinion.

Acting wise, not too shabby.  I've enjoyed her in pretty much all the films I've seen her in.  She was pretty much spot-on in one of her earliest works, the much-maligned The Horse Whisperer.

She's very pretty and a good actress too. She hasn't always chosen the best films but that doesn't change her acting ability. I don't think she's the best of her generation, but she is talented. Her best performance is still Lost in Translation

Hi there,
Hope you're all well.
I keep meaning to see a small film she did back in 2005 called "A Love Song For Bobby Long".
Has anyone seen it? It's a very hard one to track down as far as I can tell.
She was Golden Globe Nominated (again, it was the 3rd time out of the 4 times she's been nominated for a Golden Globe) for her performance in the category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. She was alongside Hilary Swank in "Million Dollar Baby", Nicole Kidman in "Birth" and Uma Thurman in "Kill Bill (volume 2) ". Nice to see her representing alongside with some of the world's top great actresses.
Unfortunately, she lost out that year to Hilary Swank's performance in "Million Dollar Baby".
Shucks.
However it's supposed to still be a great performance by her, a lost gem perhaps, and the film caught alot of attention from out of nowhere at a time when all the heavyweight releases are really gunning for attention. It's nice to see it made it through with a bit of recognition.
I couldn't see a review on the Empire website for it though?
I still think it's a wrong-un and that she robbed massively to a Golden Globe in 2004 when she was Nominated twice for her performances in "Lost In Translation" and "Girl With A Pearl Earring".
In the end it was Charlize Theron came away with the gold that year.
Still, we ALL know who got the BAFTA the year before ( in 2003)  being nominated for the same films in the Best Actress category...
and quite rightly too in my opinion.
I'd personally rather have a BAFTA to a Golden Globe. The awards do look cooler, you can use it as a mask! HA HA.
Seriously though, to me they're a bit more prestigious and on a personal level carry more clout.

Down boy!
Yup, she is very good looking lady. Actresses tend to be.
You would only have recently aquired eye-sight to not know that one.
But the accolades I was refering to were awards and nominations. For which she has many.
And she does like to spread her projects about, ok not all have been successes.
Script and Direction do hold the key, many actors and actresses who are regarded as modern legends by today's standards have quite a few skeletons in their CV closet. Actors and actresses do sadly take most of the risks as they are the ones infornt of the camera. They are the ones with everything to loose as they are directly visually representing themselves for others to see and judge by.
But from Woody Allen to Michael Bay.
From period drama to neon tinged Tokyo,
and giant spider attacks to dead pan comedy comic book adaptations.
She has, I think it's fair to be said, experimented in my opinion and is clearly driven in her work flow.
Which is much more than most out there.

As I put down on the Iron Man 2 page, Mr Favreau is singing Scarlett Johansson's praises with both her commitment and preperation to her role as Blackwidow, among others whom he's praised such as Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell and Robert Downey Jr.
To quote his rather sweet tweet:

"Scarlett kicked ass yesterday. All of her preparation has really paid off. She has a great work ethic. A real pro.
7:48 AM May 29th from Tweetie"

Great to see it's all going off. Pedal to the metal! Go pros!!!

: )

It must be easy for actors to just march on to a set and treat it as easy plain sailing, or kids stuff, just beacuse it's a graphic novel adaptation and act "les affaire" about stuff. It's nice to see that they see it actually has roots and none-the-less has some meaning. Bring out the depth and focus, sorry not meaning to sound too on my soapbox and pretentious!

: )

After all actors are usually, and quite rightly interested in character and performance in a role, that's kind of their focus I guess, of which Blackwidow is a great character among the rich tapestry of the many others involved in the production.

By the way has anyone seen "A Love Song For Bobby Long" at all? It sadly didn't get a release over here in old blighty.
Why was that?
It's got nothing but great reviews as far as I have heard. People comparing it with her exemplary performance in "Lost In Translation" which is great. From which she got yet another golden Globe nomination to boot.
I'm dying to track it down to see it but unfortunately it appears to be only a US release and really hard to obtain. I do hope that it gets a proper region 2 release with all the trimmings in terms of extra features. I mean why the hell not?

http://designfix.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/love_song_for_bobby_long.jpg

Fingers crossed! Here's hoping.

: )

Peace.

I'd say she's one of the "good guys" in the field of young / future talents of her profession.
Good actresses being a precious commodity these days in my opinon. Naomi Watts for example as well.
There seems to be a bit of a trend of others slagging off people like her and other promising youths, (Abbie Cornish. Keira Knightley etc... )which is sad considering she clearly works hard and has a broad scope on her horizons and views of roles.
She isn't afraid to try something new and is clearly into other parts of the indusrty like Direction.
Knowledge and understanding is power and will only pay off where others decide to miss out.

She's been delt kind of a rough hand with the Golden Globes...
Kind of the Kate Winslet of the Golden Globes being nominated 4 times!

i liked her in Horse WHisperer, I thought she was good in Lost In Translation even though I thought the film overrated, she was entertaining enough in The Island and even though i didnt have a clue what The Black Dahlia was about she has presence.

quite clearly she is a capable young woman with striking features to boot...she just needs a really good vehicle now so that she can raise her game beyond any other competition..

Watts will always have Mulholland Drive...Scarlett needs her Mulholland Drive...
