She's on the front of newspapers and magazines all the time these days, being declared the best and most beautiful starlet around and this seems to have resulted in something of a backlash. These days a lot of people are saying they don't see what's so special about her. So, I was just wondering, with her recent movies like Scoop and The Black Dahlia proving rather lacklustre and her role in The Prestige little more than eye candy, what is the general consensus on the lovely Scarlett and her abilities.
As for me, it's clear that she is not just one of the world's sexiest women but one of the most talented actresses of her generation. From her cool supporting roles as a teenager in The Man Who Wasn't There and Ghost World, through her delightful, charming and intelligent breakthrough in Lost in Translation (deserved an Oscar for that), to delivering great performances to be the best thing in otherwise uninspiring films like Match Point and The Black Dahlia, for me Scarlett is always worth watching as much for her acting as for her looks, a combination of old fashioned Hollywood glamour and down to earth charm, a woman with real curves in an age of over skinny celebrities and a woman with real intelligence talent in an age of vacuous reality TV heiress types. Well, I guess it's obvious what I think. Here's some pictures to help you make up your mind.

Appearance wise she is stunning, But apart from Lost in Translation she hasn't gave a convincing performance since including a very clunky performance in the Prestige. So no she doesn't deserve the hype.

I think that she is hot but not stunningly gorgeous. As for her acting talent? I'm undecided. She does have screen presence which is half the battle. But I'm not sure of her range. Now, while I thought she was great in Lost in Translation, she hasn't done anything else near as good yet. Although, I was impressed with her in Girl with the Pearl Earing and to a lesser degree in Matchpoint (which wasn't much of a stretch for her at all). Unfortunatley, she seems to not be choosing the best projects of late. Which doesn't make sense because she is in such demand that she gets offered great material.

Exactly how I feel. When Lost In Translation came out, she was meant to be the best thing since sliced bread. But no, she's not.

Apparently so ive been told  she is to play the leading role as jenna jameson in the film of Jenna Jameson s life story which is getting made. Whether she gets her kit off i dont no. I suppose s o if she is to play a porn star.

I think she is a really good actress she 's interesting to watch and her presence on screen is brilliant. Though she can get annoying at times she is a good upcoming actress. i think she should avoid cameo roles and go for bigger roles because she can then prove herself in bigger projects.

I feel that while she's an adequate actress, she's nothing that Hollywood hasn't seen before. At the moment she's the blonde du jour who will be overtaken by another sexy blonde actress in a couple of years.

i find her looks pretty weird lookin but i could see how a guy would find her hot.i think shes a pretty average actress but the problem is there are so many young actors that are just complete shit it makes her look immensly talented when in fact shes not really.

I tend to agree with the last two comments by Mari Noir and swan. She is a decent actress. But she needs to start making better choices because being the Hollywood "it" girl is very fleeting. The "next one" will be on her way soon enough. But she certainly has the opportunity to forge a long lasting career because she is talented (especially, as swan pointed out, when compared to other young actresses today).

I think you have to remember she's still only 22 and maybe hasn't built up an incredible body of work, for most actresses at any age having a performance like Scarlett's in Lost in Translation would be something to be pretty proud of. When you combine that with impressive performances in less than amazing movies, Girl With a Pearl Earring, Match Point, Black Dahlia, it suggests there is still a lot more to see from her. I mean, the actresses from the generation older than hers took a while longer to establish themselves as really well regarded. At Scarlett's age, the only thing Nicole Kidman had done of any note was moderately impressive thriller Dead Calm and the terrible Days of Thunder, Naomi Watts was still in Home and Away, Cate Blanchett didn't make Elizabeth until she was thirty. What other actresses of Scarlett's generation do people think deserve the praise and hype that she's been given? The only other person that I think can match Scarlett both in terms of looks and talent is Natalie Portman and she too has had a varied career with only three or four really great performances to indicate the talent and potential that she has. Hopefully, their upcoming pairing in The Other Boleyn Girl will give both a chance to show what they are capable of.

I've not voted as non of the choices quite fit for me, but at the moment i'd say she does not deserve the hype.  It's a crying shame the way Scarlett's allowed herself to be taken for a ride by the movie bizz.   She has talent quite a bit in fact but her roles as of late have been poor, she was alright in the Pristge but it was a underwriten part.

She did look truly stunning in The Island but is very hit and miss in terms of looks which I suppose does make her more real.  In the same respect she hasn't had the best casting with only a few films such as Lost in Translation where her talent shows.  It seems she is just being cast for ther name rather tha talent and as such is not necessarily suited to the parts she has played.

She's an amazing talent, you just need to take a look at some of her earlier performances in the likes of The Man Who Wasn't There & Lost In Translation which quite clearly show this. Lately however her reputation's taken a bit of a battering which is clearly down to her choice of movies, most of which have bombed. She's still fairly young so with a little more experience i reckon she'll soon be back on track, although she needs to learn pretty damn fast.

I'll say that she's pretty enough, but not my type. As far as her pout- I mean acting goes, it's incredible she's made it further than The Horse Whisperer.

In FHM's just published annual poll of the World's Sexiest Women, Scarlett comes an impressive 5th (four places too low but that's pretty good none the less), meanwhile, this month's Glamour magazine has a poll where its readers have voted her the number one sexiest body. This raises a couple of points, firstly it seems that the general public in their millions, both men and women, are in no doubt about the quality of Scarlett's looks and secondly begs the question, do women therefore consider Scarlett more attractive than men do given she is number one in the women's mag poll and just five in the men's mag?

She is such an overrated actress and even though she's not ugly she doesn't have that "Wow, she is gorgeous!" factor that Rachel McAdams has.  Plus, the latter has more range and seems more down to earth in real life.  SJ comes off as kind of bitchy in some interviews.  For now, SJ has nothing on McAdams, Portman, and Winslet.

SJ has what I call "Keanu syndrome."  In other words, they're limited in range yet they pick good movies (Prestige,Matrix) here and there.

She baffles me. Her performance in Lost in Translation knocked my socks off. Subtle, charming, intelligent, vulnerable. Everything else I've seen her in (The Prestige, Black Dahlia, The Island, Match Point) she was just okay. Not a bad actress but not a great one. She's utterly, utterly stunning but comes across as a bit arrogant and air headed in interviews. Not really fair to judge her on that basis though.

in response to how women prefer her looks,i dont i think shes kinda weird looking good body though. i think she got lucky with lost in translation,it seems most okay or mediocre actors have one film where they proved that they could act even if it is for one film,i think that her first major film maybe that film.kinda feel sorry her then.

I voted the first one cos their was no option that said "Stunning obviously! Good actress but not done anything too challenging!"
thats what i would have voted.
I've not seen a more attractive female on the screen, which can be distracting, she has the potential to be a great actress too!

In direct response to Talking Pie, in my opinion Scarlett has way more sex appeal than Miss McAdams! Sorry but thats the way i feel.
Miss McAdams is very beautiful also but u can't say she a better actress than Scarlett either, neither has really been tested with something juicy like Miss Joley!

My other half (female) thinks she's stunning whereas I think she's a bit too 'porn star looking' to be considered stunning (think you need a little vulernability to be considered stunning, a bit like Portman) although I know that my other half went off her after reading that she has an HIV test every few months due to her rather promiscuous love life.  Hey girl, ever heard of condoms?  So ... erm ... anyway ... went slightly off topic there!

You got to be fucking kidding me.    I can't see SJ putting a lot of emotion in a range demanding role like Lisa in Red Eye or Amy in Family Stone.  In the latter she acts as terrified as someone would be.  I see a character when I see Rachel in a movie instead of SJ.  I doubt SJ would succeed in a role like that.  SJ's deadpan delivery doesn't set the world on fire to me.  She may have poise in roles but that's about it.  Plus, as I've mentioned before, I prefer Rachel since she's not so stuck up personality wise compared to SJ.  It's like those political smear campaigns.  SJ=black and white;RMcA=color.

Plus, that dimpled smile...wow!  God, I envy Gosling.
