It certainly does, great photography and special effects. You can almost feel the power that Rasputin's glove holds.
Looks insane when he gets pulled through, eyes first. The actor, Karel Roden, really does a good job as Rasputin, perfect casting from Del Toro there.
The beginning of the film really put me in the mood, I remember thinking I was in for something special.

I thought I'd pull this old topic up again because I'm a big fan of ol' red. Hellboy is probably the film that I've rewatched the most over the last few years, not least because I double-dipped and bought the first dvd then the directors cut. I'm a big fan of the comic and although the film is quite different Del Toro manages to give the material his own spin and his passion for the film is evident throughout. Its got real heart.

I agree with you. Every word you say. I was really dissapointed in this film, i thought it was going to be great. How wrong i was. I still don't agree with what you say about Batman Begins though mrdoom14.

Really like this film, especially the director's cut. Not so much for the plot than for the characters and the little details that Del Toro has brought to the film.

A couple of questions for those who know:

1) What exactly is Rasputin's plan? To destroy the world with giant squids? What's the point of that exactly?

2) If Hellboy is the key to the aforementioned world destruction by squid (sheesh), then why does Kroenen (best character by far!) try to kill him?

Hellboy 2 titbits up and coming...

In February 2007, Mignola described the story he had developed with del Toro as one that focused on folklore and fairy tales, rather than the more pulp elements of the first film:

"It's not Nazis, machines and mad scientists but the old gods and characters who have been kind of shoved out of our world. I kind of equate it to the whole American Indian situation. The Indians were shoved onto reservations. You had your old, wise Indians who said, "You know, this is the way it is. We can't fight anymore. We just have to accept our fate." You then have your Geronimo character saying, "Or we could just kill the White Man." That's kind of the situation we have in the film. We have our elf characters resigning to the way things are and then there's one saying, "Or we could take the world back." The main difference is - what if the Indians had a nuclear warhead? The elves have their equivalent of the weapon that is too terrible to use. What if this guy decided to use it?

--------------------------------------------

June 8th was the first day of filming (not sure if its location or studio.)

Hellboy was a very pleasant suprise - it's great to see a hero who isn't a human and maybe this put people off. I think it's one of the better superhero films made

I've just seen the Director's Cut (i hadn't seen the film at all) but i think it might well be my favourite comic book film atm. It's darker without going over the top. I love Hellboy too. He is such a great character.
