ORIGINAL: Whistler Pretty much the entirety of Insidious made me shit myself. I thought it was quite tame myself apart from one or two decent scares. I thought it was a decent film for the first two thirds, but it all goes downhill and gets stupid o nice the old woman puts the gas mask on. I went to see it with two friends who are pretty easy to scare. I sat between them and at one point one was hiding behind her popcorn and the other had closed her hoodie over her face. The second one still can't listen to Tiptoe Through the Tulips without getting freaked out. There are so few horrors these days that genuinely scare me, but something about Insidious just freaks me out. I think it's something to do with the atmosphere; it's not just dark, it's evil, and it hangs there throughout the whole film. Also it's not overloaded with jump scares, but the ones that are there work really well (like the crib scene). The only criticism I have was the brief descent into Jeepers Creepers territory with the demon in the workshop, that was silly... But apart from that it's pant-shittingly great I agree. I think the scares are done pretty well. I think films like that are also creepier when there are children in danger. Kids in horror films are usually evil little things, so when there are kids in genuine danger it's a little scarier I think. I do agree about the end, too. It suffered from the same thing a lot of horrors suffer from, which is that when they fully show you the demon/ghost/monster etc, the fear factor diminishes.
