 What about slow jumps, if that makes sense.  For instance the dog with the human head in the seventies version of bodysnatchers, the final scene of freaks, and the league of gentlemens christmas special, particularly Herr Lipp on the ceiling, (lifted from Exorcist 3).  Bits in film where you go, Oooh, I didn`t like that, but not necessarily OOOHHH JESUS.

Oh yes, have seen that it is really good but more gruesome than downright scary, Carrie is quite scary especially the last scene as was Poltergeist if my memory serves me correctly.

 An American wereolf in London. I watched it last night, firstly the dream in the forest when daviv opens his eyes,oh yeah you know the bit. 

but the winner has to be the double whammy of the muppet show at home dream,  and the sheer awfulness of that nazi zombie just stabbing jenny agutter.  great stuff.

Ghostbusters 2 : When the painting first comes to life...freaked the shit out of me when I first saw it and still does.

The Thing : That scene with the jumping blood

Poltergeist 3 : When her reflection comes to life and grabs her

Child's Play : When chucky comes to life and tries to attack the mother

Couldn`t agree more.  There are so many people who have not seen this film, because of the negative reviews at the time, but it holds up really well.

Also what about the scene in the lift in the original Dark Waters?

And the scene in the lift in The Eye?

 On first viewing, the scene in Seven where the Sloth guy sits up.
Also another first viewing one...in deep Rising where they shoot the monster and their half digested friend falls out. That one got me bad. Especially when he got back up and proceeded to ask for help.


And also where the black soldier guy opens a cupboard and gets an axe to his head

The Christmas special is genuinely frightening.  The ending of Carrie is a great one.  I was watching it recently with some friends and they had not seen it before.  I think some of them made a mess in their pants, they screamed that loud.  Fantastic.

 Lol, both of mine are gonna get me some ridicule I feel but for a sheer jump moment, there is a bit in What Lies Underneath when Harrison Ford suddenly jumps up in the back of the car and I jumped out my seat lol, was just not expecting it

Anyone seen the remake of  House on the haunted hill? Well there is a scene in that where they are in the basement and there is someone at the rear of the shot with their back to the characters, who suddenly spins round and rushes up to the camera in a second...shudder....

On the big screen at least, the Dawn of The Dead remake has its moments, the little girl freaked me out, as did the subsequent happenings with the boyfriend in the bathroom lol.

28 days later, when they are at Jims house and he lights a candle or a lamp, always gets me.

It's funny you mention What Lies Beneath as that film made me jump several times..especially the scene where the dead wifes body all of a sudden comes alive....FREAK THE SHIT OUT OF ME!

 No-one seems to be mentioning the moment during the thunder storm in Misery (a lot of King adaptations in here!) where it cuts to Kathy Bates just as a flash of lightning hits. Also, in the remake of The Blob where that kid gets dissolved in the sewer, that was quite shocking in it's time, and now to a certain extent. Pre-teens don't usually get killed in horror movies.

Living on the edge is perilous, but the view is stunning.

 All great suggestions. I need to check out the Exorcist III again, it's years since I saw it. For me though it's 1) the end of Carrie,  2) the bus death in Final Destination - that literally had me gasping,  3) the end of Ringu - at the time I almost kakked myself, even though Id already kind of heard what was coming, because it was so well done, but even that was outdone for me by  4) The Grudge (the Japanese original version) which had me almost kakking myself at numerous points throughout the film!

 The whole "girl under the sink" thing in A Tale Of Two Sisters freaked me out.  Anytime I hear a strange noise coming from under a sink I think of it and get a bit uncomfortable... also The Eye certainly made me jump a number of times the first time I saw it not least the brilliant credit sequence cheap-shot.  It immediately lets you know what you're in for!

As far as slow scares go David Lynch is probably one of the best for that.  I'm pretty new to Lynch but he does seem to be a master of slowly turning ordinary things creepy.  Or theres the last scene of Mulholland Drive with that face staring out of the screen at you.  I was quite unsettled after that movie.

On a sort-of movie related note and thanks to BatFan's tale of physical reaction to The Descent I was reminded of once years ago when I was playing Alien Trilogy on the PlayStation.  I was sittiing on a small couch type seat with wheels on it (I don't know what the hell it's technically called) but I had stood up as I believe things were getting pretty tense at that stage of the game and the pressure was getting to me   Anyway my cousin comes into the room to say hello, I don't bother to pause the game while I chat with him and of course an Alien jumps out right at the screen causing me to step back in fright and fall over the seat landing on my arse!  Oh, how we laughed.

Theres a few already mentioned that were class but friggin scary!!!

The scene from The Eye, where the girl was in the school classroom, and in the opposite side of the room is a strange woman/ghost who turns and then launches for the kid and goes through the tables!!! me and my dad were like "WHAT THE FUCK!"

Nah sorry mate, the lift scene never really did it for me. Dont know why. Hows about My Little Eye near the beginning when they go up to the loft and that bird comes at them, wasn't expecting that! And there's also a few nasty little scenes in Jacobs Ladder but i can't think of them at the mo

 Someone mentioned the League of Gentlemen Christmas Special a while back.

If we're counting TV, then the king of shockers has to be Ghostwatch.

EDIT: Just thought of another one-never mind the tent sequence, in the Sixth Sense, the biggest jump scare has to be the scene in the school at night. (It's been a while since I've seen it, but it scared the bejesus out of me!)
