This thread is for the listing of DVD Price Comparison websites and Online DVD Stores. The lists are updated periodically as old sites change or die, and new sites appear.
I've also added links for a couple of sites that detail voucher codes, which may be useful in saving you a couple of quid in your purchasing.

I am not affiliated with any of the sites listed below. The sole purpose of this thread is to create a useful repository for us folk who like buying DVDs.

Price Comparison Sites
These sites allow you to enter a DVD title and then return the prices of the title at a selection of online stores. Whether or not these comparison sites are affiliated with or sponsored by certain stores is not known, but it is recommended that you try a couple out and find the one that gives the best (or widest ranging) results. My personal favourites are Find-DVD for R2 and DVD Price Search for R1. DVD Plaza's search is also good for R4. 123PriceCheck also looks interesting for R2, as they include stores not normally included by other search comparison sites (such as the BBC Shop, Currys, Dixons etc).

I haven't found a decent site for comparing East Asian (R2J, R3, R6 and R0) DVD site prices yet, so if you find one, reply to this thread.

Please note: On occasion, the prices can be listed wrongly on the comparison sites. When you click through to your chosen website, it is possible you may see a different price. This is pretty rare, but can happen when, for example, multiple editions of the same DVD are released.

Voucher Code Sites
These sites list vouchers / coupons for various DVD stores (as well as other outlets), and do not require any subscription. I make no guarantees as to whether any featured codes will work, but once you've found your cheapest online stores, it's worth checking one or more of these to see if you can get another wee bit off the price.

Online DVD Stores

I have checked all sites below and confirmed that they all ship to the UK. Many stores based in other countries that do not ship to the UK have been omitted. All sites are in English, unless otherwise stated. If you are not multi-lingual, you'll need a translation site open whilst using non-English international websites. Here's a couple:

Google Translate - http://translate.google.com/?hl=en#
Yahoo Babelfishhttp://babelfish.yahoo.com/

I've tried to split the online store sites into three categories: Recommended and Awaiting Recommendation and Avoid. This is not a perfect rating system, but it's based on a combination of website reviews, Empire forum members' opinions and personal experience. It is open to change, so if you have had particularly positive or negative experiences with any of the listed sites, please feel free to post to this thread and share your experience. One vote may not necessarily change the recommendation level, as regular DVD buyers will know you can have the odd bad experience at generally good stores, and vice versa.

Recommended sites are large well known stores with a generally good track record, or are smaller stores that have received positive remarks from multiple site members.
Awaiting Recommendation sites may have either not been recommended by Empire users, or have received mixed positive and negative remarks, so no clear rating can be applied.
Avoid sites are rare, but they're the ones that receive multiple negative remarks, and little to no positive remarks.

So... once you've found your best price, you'll need to register at the relevant store site (if you haven't already) and make your purchase.

And if anyone can add more sites, add comments regarding any of those listed, or even start a list of sites to avoid (remember DVDSoon / DVDImport?), that would be beneficial too.

Then, register at the relevant site and make your purchase.
Through personal experience I can recommend the following UK-based sites for R2 DVDs:

I can also recommend these sites for non-R2 DVDs:

I've highlighted the sites which I regularly use and recommend.  The best deals can be found using this combination in 99.9% of cases.

May I also add that WHSMith and Woolworths are just plain shit.

I'd add an OK for Filmnight and an avoid like the plague for the incredibly unreliable Selectcheaper with whom I have had only ONE successful order out of several. Their stock system and communications are crap (especially when they regularly screw up). Refunds can take a while.

Well, asking questions, yes. Hopefully!

But everyone might have different experiences and there will still be differing views on who is reliable and who isn't, I think?

I'll happily add the following retailers:

Axel Music - http://www.axelmusic.com/ - All Regions, based in Denmark

DVD Planet - http://www.dvdplanet.com/index.cfm - US R1. Often the best (=cheapest) place for Criterions

Both highly recommended.

Well, I've had one purch with SelectCheaper and it went ok, so I'm maybe not in the best position to agree or disagree with you. But if any one else concurs with you that they're shite, I'll happily move 'em to an Avoid section.

I'll maintain the list and it can be reformatted if anyone thinks there's a better way to do it - one thought is that at present it's about my personal usage, when really it should be about everyone's usage of the sites.
To fix that, can people who have used any of the following sites give them a general thumbs up or down, and then they can be amalgamated into the main recommends list:

  • DVDPopcorn
  • DVDSource
  • Filmnight
  • Movie Mail

If a site gets 2 or 3 thumbs ups I'll stick em in the Recommends. 2 or 3 thumbs down and it goes in the Avoid bin. I obviously don't want to go back and forth on this too much if people have contradictory opinions.

The UK region 2 sites I use have all been covered, but I also regularly use the following sites:

www.dvdslimited.com  Region 1 site.  Not overly cheap, but they ship from within the UK, so you never have to worry about import charges.

www.videouniverse.com  US based region 1 site, also sells cds and adult dvds.

www.sazuma.com  European site specializing in exploitation films.  Useful source of mainland European region 2 dvds.  Drawbacks include fairly high prices and very slow shipping times for dvds that aren't in stock.

Sorry, thought it would be clear as there was more than one rating for a seller, but what I posted was a total including the ratings you posted along with DLM's and mine.

No, it's fine, I got it! Took me a while, but I got there...

    The movers were:
Pherlygwen and Lebowski gave positives on Axel Music.
elab49 and Lebowski gave neagatives for SelectCheaper.

Will add the remaining +'s now (including yours for DVDPopcorn which I'd missed).

Ok, barnaby's rating of Movietyme takes it into Recommended territory.
    Added shantnerhamster's suggestions each with a 1+.

Remember 2 positive ratings and the site moves to Recommended, 2 negatives and it moves to Avoid.

The outstanding list requiring ratings is as follows:
    • DVDPopcorn (1+)
    • Filmnight
    • Movie Mail
    • All About Movies (Australia / R4)
    • AllDVD (1+)
    • DVDAsian (Korea / Asian) (1+)
    • DVD Boxoffice (R1)
    • DV-Depot (Canada / R1)
    • DVD Orchard (Australia / R4)
    • DVDsLimited (UK / R1) (1+)
    • Enterprises DVD (UK / R1 & R2)
    • HKDVDStore.com

Still missed the Popcorn one, and I never gave SelectCheaper a neg just carried the one you mentioned over for the total!    Everything mentioned prior to my post was included in it.

Might be easier if you completely disregard that ratings post I made and just add positives for Popcorn, Movietyme and Axel Music from me instead.  DVD Orchard have just sent me something too, so I'll let you know about them.

Ok, done a bit of editing to the original post:

    - Added Cinébox and removed the now defunct dv-depot.
    - Added locations to non-R2 online stores, so we know where we're buying from. Will go through the R2s tomorrow.
    - Added DVD regions available at those stores as best I could - it is assumed that all online stores probably sell some region-free DVDs, so R0 is not included.
    - Reformatted the lists a bit, and in doing so, screwed up all the hyperlinks for the addresses. Now fixed.

It strikes me that the lists in the original post would be better if they were in tables rather than a list. Is there any way to do that on here?
    The columns would be:

    Site name
    URL
    Store Location
    Regions Sold
    +/- Rating

Ok, I've added the locations for the Region 2 DVD sites.

This threw up a few interesting points:

    - The sheer number of sites that are based in the Channel Islands.
    - Tesco Jersey has moved to Zurich, but is still called Tesco Jersey.
    - Some sites, like WH Smiths, ship their cheaper stuff (like DVDs under £18) from the Channel Islands, but more expensive items are shipped from England. This means they make savings by selling us the tax-free Jersey items at full UK cost.

Still waiting for ratings on the following stores please!
    • DVDPopcorn (UK) (1+)
    • DVDSource (UK)
    • Filmnight (UK)
    • Movie Mail (UK)

    • All About Movies (Australia)
    • AllDVD (Canada) (1+)
    • CDPlus (Canada)
    • Cinébox (Canada)
    • DVDAsian (USA) (1+)
    • DVD Boxoffice (Canada)
    • DVD Orchard (Australia)
    • DVDs Limited (UK) (1+)
    • Enterprises DVD (UK)
    • HKDVDStore (USA)
    • Sazuma (Austria) (1+)
    • Sensasian (Malaysia)
    • SelectCheaper (1-)
    • Video Universe (USA) (1+)
