The world is getting hotter and the ozone layer is depleating and the planet could well be doomned or is it? Who thinks its gonna be ok and why?

Two things tell me no.

One is America's belief in God, two is the popularity of superheroes.

Both indicate a reliance on outside, powerful forces to save humanity from, ultimately, itself. We ain't going to get ourselves out of this one.

I read in the paper at the weekend that in 20 years times 40% of all skiing resorts will have to close and skiing will be very, very expensive. Basically I think we are going to just have to create the technology to adapt, all of the developed countries will basically be okay, all the poorer ones will suffer massive casualties. Does anyone think that if a Tsunami happened on the coast of America any where near the amount of people would die compared with it happening in Indonesia and Thailand?

Poor people already do die, even in rich countries. Rich people don't generally care. We do a bit of charity, watch a bit of comic relief and then moan about it a little. That's the way the world works.

Depends on the size of the tsunami of course.  If (when) La Palma goes a large percentage of the eastern seaboard of the US would likely be destroyed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Palma .

right I might try and edge this back on topic slightly....

it seems to me that even if we were to stop all carbon emissions tomorrow, assuming that it is they that cause global warming, the earth is still going to heat up to a point where the ice caps will melt, it has after all already happenned before without the assistance of humans and will likely do the same again with or without our help along the way. all this talk of cutting down on carbon emissions will only slow the time that it will take for this to happen, I read that even if everybody signed up to and adhered to the Kyoto protocol it would only retard the effects by six years, what is needed is a plan to either reduce the carbon levels (which have risen from 320 to 380 parts per million) at a greater rate than they are being released, which as far as I know could not be left up to Mrs. Nature herself, even if we were to cut back all of our emissions as much as we can.

what pisses me off is that there seems to be so much money flying around for research into the effects of global warming, and to prove that it's happening, surely what climate scientists should be looking at are ways of reducing the amount of carbon at a faster rate than nature can do by its self,

The gasses hanging around last for 80 years. So if we all stopped tomorow they would still be there untill near the end of this century, Plus America isnt helping by refusing to do anything meaningful about it. They contribute the most at the moment.

The emissions that cause a problem hang around for varying lengths of time.  Some as little as 80 years and some hundreds of years.

The end time is near.

It will be an era fraught with boundless greed & corruption where global monetary systems disintegrate leaving brother to kill brother for a grain of over cooked rice. The nations of the civilised world will collapse under the impressive weight of parasitic political conspiracies which remove all hope & optimism from their once faithful citizens. Around the globe, generations of polluters will be punished for their sins. Unshielded by the O-zone they have successfully depleted, left to bake in the searing naked rays of light. Wholesale assassinations served to destabilise every remaining government, leaving the starving & wicked to fend for themselves. Bloodthirsty renegade cyborgs created by tax dodging corporations reek havoc. Pissed off androids tired of being slaves to a godless & gutless system, where the rich get richer & the poor get fucked over and out, unleash total world wide destruction by means of nuclear holocaust, annihilating the terrified masses, leaving in its torturous wake nothing but vicious, cannibalistic, mutating, radiating, and horribly disfigured hordes of satanic killers, begged on revenge, but against whom? There are so few left alive. Starvation reins supreme, forcing unlucky survivors to eat anything & anyone in their path. Massive earthquakes crack the planets crust like a hollow egg shell, causing unending volcanic eruptions. Creatures of the seven seas, unable to escape the certain death upon land, boil in their liquid prison. Disease then circles the earth, plagues & viruses with no known cause or cure laying waste to whatever draws breath, and human-kind having proven itself to be nothing more than a race of ruthless scavengers, fall victim to merciless attacks at the hands of interplanetary alien tribes who seek to conquer our charred remains.

As Porno for Pyros say in Pets:

quote:

My friend says we're like the dinosaurs

much faster than they ever did

We're probably buggering it up for future generations of surface-dwellers, but it's a bit arrogant to suggest that we're capable of destroying a whole planet and all that lives on and in it.  There are millions (possibly billions) of species of insects and deepwater-dwelling creatures that were around long before we got here and will continue to be around long after we're all gone.  Humans are not the beginning of life on Earth, and humans aren't going to be the end of it.

Yeah, George Carlin said it well with "Save the planet? The planet's fine, we're fucked!"

I've been half watching something on BBC2 just now about people trying to pro-actively come up with ways to save us, blowing up volcanos, feeding piss to plankton and stuff.

My company is currently conducting research into a small scale energy from domestic waste plant.  The sort of thing you could buy at B&Q and use the power it generates from your putrescible waste to power your shower or your tv.

It's stuff like this that can make a difference as it becomes part of your life very quickly and is simple to accomodate.  You also get personal wind turbines that bolt on like a satelite dish and plug straight into your mains.  They also have the added bonus of not providing you with 100 channels of shit.

I watched An Inconvenient Truth last night and it didn't make for pretty viewing. I'd like to know what the facts are behind the idea that the damage done is now irreversible or not. The film gave the impression it was, but above posts suggest otherwise. I really want to do my bit to help, but I can't help thinking that buying energy saving light bulbs and doing my bit of recycling will be futile when there are factories around the world pumping out tonnes and tonnes of Carbon emissions everyday.

The damage is done. The emissions we make today will still be having an impact in 100 years time. What we need to do is try to ensure that after this period things can return (if it's possible) to a natural equilibrium.

It's certainly not futile to still do your bit to help as the gross emission value will always be lower if you reduce your consumption. The problem is that we don't really have the right to tell countries like China and India not to burn their natural resources to assist their economies due to us fucking up the planet. What we can do is try to persuade them that a more sustainable route is the way to go.

Does anyone know if anybody has done research into artificial ozone? We know how to destroy it, surely we can come up with some way to make it? No?

I know it's only one of a multitude of probs but surely it should be looked into.

Also, personally I think the sooner all the oil and coal run out the better, we'll all have to become farmers again. Invest in cattle and horses, you heard it here first.

The problem is that the substances which cause ozone depletion are not destroyed in the process, so that one Cl from a CFC in the atmosphere can destroy millions of ozone molecules. In simple terms:

Cl + O3
ClO + O2
ClO + O
Cl + O2
In sum O3 + O
O2 + O2

The Cl remains free to go on destroying more.

It's not hard to make and will stabilise naturally I believe but the problem gasses havea quite a long residence time in the atmosphere.

It's not like the C1 from your example can depleat the ozone layer and heat up the earth alone, you need all the different chlorofluorocarbon's that trap in the suns rays to do that.

Still I don't believe in all this Global Warming rubbish, temperatures and CO2 levels are actually lower than previous peaks, this is not the highest they've ever been in the earths history. And if you look at the history of the earth's temperature and CO2 levels it has a patter of going up and down repeatedly, we're just currently going through a peak, I'm not sure how long these peaks last but they'll go back down naturally again.

Well that's the crux of the matter for me.
People are lazy - we all are.
It needs to be easily intigrated into everyday life because the majority of
people can't be arsed otherwise.
The government can do their bit by creating more energy efficiency laws too.

I can see you've researched that thouroughly  .

Suffice to say that 99% of the worlds atmospheric scientists, climatologists, atmospheric physicists and chemists disagree with you.
