Saturday Night Live

1:40am - 2:40am

ITV4

An American institution that's been running since 1975, the wildly variable topical comedy-and-music show is back here with episodes that went out in the autumn. In the past, the show has been a launching pad for the careers of Eddie Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Ben Stiller, while films The Blues Brothers and Wayne's World both began life as sketches on Saturday Night Live. Sadly, it's not the force it used to be, but this opener should be good for a few laughs at the expense of George Dubya, Osama Bin Laden and Al Pacino, among others. US stand-up Dane Cook is the guest host, and the Killers provide the music.

RT reviewer - Geoff Ellis

I haven't seeny any episodes of SNL since Will Ferrell left Is it any good these days? Who is left on it, I don't know if I'll bother if Jimmy Fallon is the best its got to offer (although maybe he left SNL too after the 'success' of Taxi)

Jimmy Fallon left quite a while ago. The cast isn't that well known, and although not reaching the heights of some previous years, it's still top notch quality. I struggle to name my favourite cast member as pretty much all of them are very talented, and Weekend Update is as good as its been for quite some time now.

I've been downloading this for a few years now and this Season has just been great. Amazingly, the Justin Timberlake episode has been the highlight.

There's no doubt I'll be swiftly ostracized from Small Screen for what I'm about to say, but...

The definitive years of SNL are 1988-93, featuring these cast-members:

Jon Lovitz
Victoria Jackson
Jan Hooks
Dana Carvey
Phil Hartman
Mike Myers
Kevin Nealon
Chris Farley
Chris Rock
Julia Sweeney
David Spade
Adam Sandler
Tim Meadows

and Rob Schneider. Yes, Rob Schneider!

Regrettably I stopped watching when most of them left and the 'newbies' came into the picture. (i.e. Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, Jimmy Fallon, Molly Shannon)

The Wire is surely the best TV show ever broadcast in America. This claim isn't based on my having seen all the possible rivals for the title, but on the premise that no other program has ever done anything remotely like what this one does, namely to portray the social, political, and economic life of an American city with the scope, observational precision, and moral vision of great literature.

The Wire has never won an emmy? [It] deserves the Nobel Prize for Literature!

Nope, i totally agree. For me, nothing compares to the Phil Hartman years. Easily SNL's greatest cast member.

Then you've got Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Jon Lovitz, Dana Carvey, Chris Rock. All Comedy Gods in my eyes.

Yes indeed.  An undeniable comedic legend who deserves all the praise he gets. He is still sorely missed.

Fast Fact:  His extraordinary Bill Clinton impression has yet to be surpassed.

Ah, it was top class. As all his impressions were. My favourite was probably his Frank Sinatra one, but it's a tough one to call.

Saturday Night Live is the best show ever!
I screamed with delight when I saw it was now shoing over here on ITV4.
Although I haven't seen any of the EARLY ones, my fave SNL cast members are Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon - those two are legends in my eyes!
I love Weekend Update!

Yes!  The Tony Bennet thing was hilarious.  I'm hooked now after watching clips on youtube.  I'm also in love with Amy Poehler and Tina 'Mean Girls' Fey.

Ah Tina "The Legend" Fey
She rocks...
However considering they're showing the latest episodes I don't think we'll get to see much of her -shame....
Wish they could show a couple of episodes with Fallon-Fey in them...
