I had a quick look over the last 6 pages and couldn't see athread on this new ITV show, so I've started this one. Starting this Saturday on ITV1 at 7.45pm.

Anyone excited about this new ITV offering? I'm amazed quite frankly that ITV are doing anything sci-fi (although the recent Afterlife was very good). Or potentially worth watching for that matter....

Another encouraging example of British sci-fi in the post-rebooted Who era? It's just a shame tv sci-fi is generally so expensive to make and we had a drought of British sci-fi in the 90s.

Everyone has been comparing it with Who but I get the feeling ITV are going for their own Torchwood.

Any thoughts?

It is very likely to be the work of a five minute brain storming session.

ITV Boss: 'Right guys, we need a sci-fi programme to cash in on the Doctor Who inspired sci-fi craze. Something big. Something exciting. Preferably with lots of CGI.'

ITV Assistant: 'I know! Walking with Dinosaurs was really popular wasn't it! How about we copy an old episode of Doctor Who - Invasion of the Dinosaurs, which no one remembers, and mix it with a few elements of Torchwood?'

ITV Boss: 'Great. That'll do. Have the script on my desk by tomorrow morning.'

Positives. Douglas Henshall - proper actor. Mind you, so is Patrick Stewart and Eleventh Hour was total toss.

Negatives -

S Club 'singer' has a part. How cute - uggh.

The missing wife thing is straight out of the failed Veritas (which also had the group of young cuties round the lead scientist)

The writers - although one credited has done Rome and some decent stuff lately, the others seem to be off the appallingly written Robin Hood and have soaps and Soldier Soldier in their history. Doesn't inspire any confidence.

Hmmm, looks a bit albinoy in those pics which isn't really my cup of tea.

I'll give the first episode a try although i don't hold out too much hope, still might just squeeze into the "so bad it's good" catergory.

I'm going to give this a go: should be entertaining at least. I predict many on here will dislike it, but if it has a decent budget it should at least look good. Henshall is a very good actor and Spearitt has done her fair share of acting too, so shouldn't be all that bad.

I'll give it a go but it sounds bloody stupid (dinosaurs?!). They used Muse for the TV spot though, which I approve of.

Piper had a pedigree in acting though and did very well in the Canterbury Tales thing. I'm guessing you weren't a fan in Doctor who? And while I found the writing of the character increasingly annoying in season 2 it wasn't Piper herself, I think, who was the problem. She was, after all, the best thing about the pilot.

Piper was OK, wasn't her fault that Rose was an annoyingly written character. It just seems a bit of a double standard to mark out the casting of a former pop star as a negative in this show before its started.

As I recall actually from my hazy memories of channel flicking, Hannah wasn't a bad little actress at all.

I'd be more concerned about the script. A good script can carry a few actors who aren't all that. I will save judgement till tomorrow.

Yes, I think the script may be the thing to worry about. A duff script will often make good actors seem wooden (like in Torchwood, for much of the time).

I agree that Billie Piper did a good job in DW, even if her character could be annoying at times, so have no objection to Spearitt. Anyway, I will watch it with an open mind and not expect to see Bafta-winning stuff.

I hadn't realised she'd acted before (I don't count the S Club show).

Henshall is Scottish and is an excellent actor, IMO. I particularly loved Orphans.

Yeah I quite enjoyed it but the writers really do need to read Ray Bradbury's A Sound Of Thunder. You don't just walk around 100 million years in the past. That's just silly.

Not bad though for an ITV show, i'll be watching next week. Killer insects!

Thought it was pretty bad myself. Awful dialogue and poor attempts to be funny with actors who don't have the talent to pull it off. Too much brooding and glaring down the camera too.

I thought it was a fun show: interesting story, decent effects and some exciting dinosaur action. I thought Henshall was good in the lead role and the other actors OK, if not great. While the script is hardly the sharpest, I certainly don't think it was bad. Certainly on a par with most Sci-Fi series. For a family-orientated Saturday night show, I wouldn't have expected much more.
