That just made me do a confused face. I thought that said "Jennifer Aniston". Haha.
I will have to check out her novels, that rant about LKH is too true.

That link is one of the most amazing things Ive ever read. Ive read Armintrout before. Shes good and clearly she knows her audience.

LKH on the other hand is a total ego maniac. Her opinion of herself is so enflated it makes me angry aswell. Ive seen her be this way before. With other writers and her own readers. I dont know who it is that is blowing so much smoke up her ass but someone needs a reality check.

The idea that she created the vampire genre really grinds my gears. Ive had arguments (when I was on her board) with other readers who defended this way of thinking. There was once a thread where we got into the really picky details of who actually came first when it came to modern vampires. LKH doesnt seem to know Anne Rice exists and that what she wrote pisses all over LKHs lame ass, wimpy vampires. Then there was the Buffy fiasco which just makes me tired thinking about it.

Im glad to see another author taking issue with her. She deserves every bit of criticism she gets.

Hit me with it! I have so many fairly contradictory ideas of what may / may not happen that my brain may burst

And as for the rest of you - The Dresden Files is where its at - wizards, werewolves, vampires (and by vampires i mean real, badass vampires not the whiny kind), fallen angels, faeries, trolls, zombies and everything in between.

....

Did i mention the zombie t-rex?

Yep. That's right. A zombie Tyrannosaurus Rex. Need i say more

I am so tempted to do a recap of one of the Anita Blake books for my blog (I do recaps of shitty young adult novels inspired/influenced/ripped off from the popularity of Twilight and I found a series that's sort of the YA version of AB so it would be fun to cover the original shittery.) Which one would you recommend as being the most fun to tear apart? I've read the first 9 and then stopped before the major sexarama shenanigans happened.

What's that? You want a link to my book recaps? Well, if you insist: CLICK.

You worked that in so subtly, Amelie, that I barely even noticed.
Can't remember which the worst one was - they've all blurred together in a hideous mass of badly-written sex.
Just pick one at random - it'll be shit enough for your needs.

As for Bullet, not read it yet (not had a forfeit in the Scrabble for awhile).
I did notice that it was available for about 4 quid on the Amazon Kindle store though

Micah was the worst by far, review that one. It was guilty of the usual crap, but added on top of that, the length was an insult (pun not intended for once) and the size of the text was so big it was like it was meant for cataracts sufferers.

Amelie I feel really ashamed now.. I bloody loved Hush Hush. I even bought it for my boyfriend's sister for her birthday.

*Slinks out of thread all embarassed*

*Comes back in*

Has anyone else read the Chicagoland Vampire series By Chloe Neil?

They are quite good. Some laugh out loud moments in them.

*points ar Harley* SHUN! SHUUUNNNN!

I must admit I have never hated a book as much as I did with Hush Hush. It just left me feeling so dirty. The sad thing is I may or may not be reviewing the sequel too if I can get a hold of an ARC.

Hex, the sad thing is I think I actually own Micah (I got a bunch of the Merry Gentry books for free from a US friend and it came along with it if I remember correctly.) The one with the lowest GoodReads rating is Danse Macabre but I'll need to see how things go for time and all that. *stares at university work*

Danse was what eventually broke me. I couldnt finish it.

I still recommend the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R Ward. Yes the character names are a bit silly but they are great reads.

Wards series is actually the reverse of what is happening to LKHs. Instead of descending into the shitty porno of Anitas world, Wards books started as paranormal romance but as the series progressed it shifted more towards alot of dark stuff and can be very violent. Its a very refreshing take on the vampire myth. And the Brotherhood are the kind of characters you can actually root for and their mates (whilst not ideal modern women in some respects) are smart and tough. The "shellans" are doctors and nurses and ones even an assassin.

Cannot recommend them enough.

I think that Laurell K Hamilton is really talented, and have all of her Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry books.

I do think that she was at her best with the first 4-5 Anita Blake books myself. She has started to get on my nerves because all of a sudden they're turnng into horror/dodgy black lace books. If I wanted to buy a black lace novel, I would! I think it's become a bit contrived, and both of the female leads in both of her series are short and sexy (but are terribly insecure) and can't help to bonk loadsa blokes. It would be fine if her books didn't start out as good horror.

When she focuses on a proper plot she does really well, it's just unfortunate that there is a compulsory poorly written bonkathon every so often.

In her later books she has started to use certain phrases over and over again such as "blood and thicker things" when describing a messy murder scene. The tortured soul thing in the Anita Blake books is getting a bit old now.

Such a pity!! She has a tremendous imagination, but keeps falling back on the same cliches. I hope she gets back to the writing she used to do. Although I have been buying her books faithfully in the hope she'll get back to her former glory, I don't know if I'll buy

Couldn't agree more! I've given up on her!

I got up to The Harlequin in the Anita Blake books. Then just walked away from the series.

My mum brought me a book called the Covent? by J.R Ward about a fallen angel which I thought was beyond shit... Hex have you read it? Is it worth me persevering with?

Have discovered three new series of books I'm cautiously hopeful about.

The some girls bite series also called the Chigacoland Vampire series it is a slight romance type set but hardly any sex, some witty dialogue and a nice story arch is starting to show.

The October (Toby) Daye series a fae changeling who is a PI who has 14 years stolen from her. Are more like crime thrillers set in the Fae world than urban fantasy's.

Spellcrackers.com series Half Fae Genny is a spellcracker, a brilliant twist to the vampire myth in these books, the main drawing point for me with this that they were based in London. Aside from Felix Castor I've not read any other books in this "genre" based in the UK.

HQ, scrap my earlier comment on DF thread, found this.

Could anyone explain to me exactly how and why Anita Blake ended up in a 3 way with a wolf and a leopard man?

I have given up on the series, just curious as to how a character who was apparently ex-Catholic with a strict sense of right and wrong and apparent hang-ups about nudity ended up banging every man / vampire / animal in a 3 mile radius.

Well first of all she freaked out because Richard changed into a wolf on top of her and she got covered in goo! So freaked out ran back to Jean Claude and had sex in a bath. Then she realised that gosh darn it wasn't Richard wonderful and had a massive cock so she fucked him. Then she got infected with the ardour and slept with everything that moved including two dodgy rape like scenes and I'm led to believe an almost paedophile scene in a later book.

This is all from memory so I'm probably missing out on some stuff!

So essentially this series is like the Gor series of books which started off decent enough but descended into sadomasochistic sexual adventures as the author dissolved into a frothing mass of pent up mastubatory fantasy?

*waves at Flange* The almost sad thing is the first handful of books were decent supernatural thrillers till the author went mental. I believe she's currently fighting with fans on Amazon due to them not seeing that she's evolved and her stories are more real. Or some such bollocks.

Hadn't realised she'd actually started arguing with fans? That's never a good thing to do.
If someone has a criticism, whether you think it's legitimate or not, just take it on the chin and say thank you.
Unless you've gone mental and vanished up your own arse, in which case feel free to make yourself look like a massive, egotistical tit.

I still follow her on Twitter and some of her ramblings go beyond the batshit level of craziness. What's upsetting about it is that it seems her and Neil Gaiman are friends.

I love this thread I really do, it's just full of brilliant snark and disturbing mental images.

From what I understand from reading a fellow board members twitter feeds it seems relatively common now for authors to argue with fans regarding their novels. Which just strikes me as wrong. We know Miss Hamilton has gone mental and a tit is the nicest thing to call her. I keep hoping Darla's novel gets published so we can see how bad it is.

I stopped following her on Twitter after my timeline got filled with every single song she listened to. How can the marvellous Neil Gaiman be friends with her? That's just not right.
