Apologies now if there's already a thread dedicated to her, in fairness I couldn't be arsed checking.

Now I know Bubba is a huge fan of these, she introduced me to Meredith Gentry and by god was I hooked!

It's trash, complete relentless fun trash! It's almost as though a chapter is wasted if she doesn't have sex of some form or another in it. But it's set in a world where Faerie is accepted into normal society.

Faerie still has it's rules and it's a harsh place to be but both seelie and unseelie courts are slowly dying. Can this part-mortal, part-sidhe woman really be the woman to save them both?

It's quite amazing that for a book where you're supposed to be rooting for the principal character you find yourself more attraced to the people surrounding her.

The guards she has around her are the men you would kill for to have in your life. Her enemies are trying constantly to kill her and to top it all off she's also a private detective.

Bloody good fun. I raced through these books and I'm champing at the bit for the next one in the series.

I seem to vaguely remember reading the first four of her books at some point about three months ago they are enjoyable but so incredibly forgettable I can barely remember them. I did read a copy of the comic a couple of weeks ago thought.

I think that Laurell K Hamilton is really talented, and have all of her Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry books.

I do think that she was at her best with the first 4-5 Anita Blake books myself. She has started to get on my nerves because all of a sudden they're turnng into horror/dodgy black lace books. If I wanted to buy a black lace novel, I would! I think it's become a bit contrived, and both of the female leads in both of her series are short and sexy (but are terribly insecure) and can't help to bonk loadsa blokes. It would be fine if her books didn't start out as good horror.

When she focuses on a proper plot she does really well, it's just unfortunate that there is a compulsory poorly written bonkathon every so often.

In her later books she has started to use certain phrases over and over again such as "blood and thicker things" when describing a messy murder scene. The tortured soul thing in the Anita Blake books is getting a bit old now.

Such a pity!! She has a tremendous imagination, but keeps falling back on the same cliches. I hope she gets back to the writing she used to do. Although I have been buying her books faithfully in the hope she'll get back to her former glory, I don't know if I'll buy any more if they carry on like they are at the moment. It's a pity because she was one of my favourite authors for a long time.

Why Laurell? Why???

I used to love her (flaws and all) but she has seriously gone downhill lately. Anita Blake was never a very sympathetic character but holy fuck shes like a gorgon now. Ive stopped reading her altogether. Danse Macabre was the last straw.

And Hamilton openly hates her older readers cus they wont put up with her third rate bullshit anymore. Nice to know she appreciates the people who got her where she is today.

If you do ever read them, read up to book 9 then just leave it. Anything that comes after that point is a waste of time.

Have to, sadly, admit that I agree with Mrs Wibble and Hex! The first few Anita Blake books are outstanding, great horror-comedy, funny and dark and nicely twisted, and Anita's a fantastic, strong female character.

And then the sex comes in and the plots go by the wayside. What the hell happened to the storylines?? Danse Macabre is set over 2 days, if that, there's little to no fighting, no real crime-solving - all the things that I started reading Laurell K Hamilton for have been lost. Now, I enjoy trashy vampire porn as much as the next lady (

), but dammit I miss hard-ass, crime-solving Anita!

....That said, I'm still buying the Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry novels as and when they come out! Although Mistral's Kiss was so trashy I feel there should be a new word invented to describe it...

And don't bother with any of her short stories. They're just her Anita novels, condensed into shorter form. What a rip-off.

I do want to get the graphic novels, though....

Agreed Mistral's Kiss didn't feel as though anything had actually moved along since the last book. It seemed to be nothing but one long orgy. Don't get me wrong, I read it in a flash, but the story arc has hardly been moved along much. I mean, just how much of a timespan are we talking here?

Saying that, I fucking loved it. Sometimes there's nothing better than some cheap trash to read.

Too true!

I read it in an afternoon....And the next Meredith Gentry novel is out in October! The new Anita Blake in June. Bring it on....

Much as I enjoy reading high-brow stuff like Vanity Fair, there's many a time when I just want to sit and read Hamilton!

She has her moments, but you do get the sense of Hamilton using the "cut and paste" approach to new books. I mean, huge sections of plot and/or sex scenes just get copied directly from past books into new ones - like we won't notice or remember. And her descriptions do get repetitive...

I have fingers crossed for The Harlequin, new Anita Blake novel out this year. I like to hope there'll be more plot than hackneyed sex scenes in this one.

Unfortunately I dont think there will be much of change. Even though the first chapter posted on the website looks promising I wont be holding my breath.

The plot of the new one sounds a lot stronger than Danse Macabre at least.

And you'd think from my Hamilton-trashing here that I wasn't a fan. And yet I have her two upcoming books on pre-order on Amazon, and am already excited at the thought of reading them, like the slavering addict of her trash that I am.

I just feel so sorry for him. Hes stuck in this impossible situation with Anita for the rest of his life (cus of the tri), so no wonder he gets cranky. If I had to deal with her on a regular basis I would go crazy too.

But then something tells me Richard may not be in the future books much or indeed at all. From her blogs Ms Hamilton seems to have a real dislike for him and cant write him anymore without a fight breaking out. So me thinks a "loophole" in the tri may occur at some point.

And yeah, I can see he's stuck in a really godawful situation....but it was his idea to get stuck in it in the first place!! She has certainly spawned a generation of impersonators. I was leant a book by Lillith Saintcrow (if that is really her name) called Working for the Devil which has a main character who is pretty much a clone of the Anita Blake character and a story following a very similar line other than the love interest being a demon rather than a vampire.

I loved Working for the Devil. I thought it had a lot more layers and depth than anything LKH writes. And apart from the fact that Danny is a bit prickly (with good reason unlike Anita) and a necromancer (an occupation that is similar to Anitas in name only) I didnt see many other likenesses.

I read her short story collection Strange Candy today and it wasnt too bad...
but one bit was a short Anita Blake story with a really excruciatingly bad sex scene in it...seriously, i could write better...not that im bragging!

What annoys me the most about Anita Blake is that her character has become really poorly written. All she does is worry about how many new men she has to have sex with and then carries on adding to the numbers. And the sex scenes are appallingly written - I hate it when she refers to her "opening" - nice!

Plus I agree with Shaunette about the crime solving, that was always fun to read, but now it's just who does she have to have sex with now. And that crap about Richard. He's an idiot trying to get the perfect 2.4 children set up, it gets really boring.

So, to fix the Anita Blake series she just needs to get rid of the wet blanket of a werewolf (such a wuss - I always thought it's be cool to be a werewolf), more mystery-solving and ass-kickery and fewer nauseating sex scenes (there's only so many times I can read about someone's cervix getting pummelled before I lose the will to live. Wonder if they'll show that in the graphic novels Shaunette wants...)

There is an element of truth in this rumour. Richards character took a turn for the worse after LKH got divorced and then Micah was introduced and was this apparently perfect soulmate for Anita. And even though Anita is clearly the authors Mary Sue, this rumour and the others is something that is forbidden to be discuss on her message board (which can be like Nazi germany at times).

Having seen pictures of her current husband though he looks nothing like Micah. He has long long gingerish hair, a beard and was the founding member of her offical fan club (not even gonna touch that one). Whereas Micah is described as being basically Anita with a very big penis.
