My dad told me he saw this film twice back in '66 when it came out, said people back then were shocked by the violence and language.

TGTBATU TRIVIA: Did you know the theme tune was released as a single and made it to #1 in the charts?

And it still sounds as wonderful today. I still get the old goosebumps listening to it.

Quite right Ninj. But my personal favourite track from Ennio's GBU score is 'Ecstasy of Gold'. I remember when I first discovered that Metallica play said track to open their gigs, I couldn't believe it!

That's true. In fact, liquid nitrogen has to take 'cool lessons' from Mr. Eastwood.

my dad saw this first on a Saturday matinee at a cinema in Aberdeen now longer in existence. 16 year old apprentice joiner with phuck all money in the cheapo balcony seats with his equally skint mates. When men were men and teenagers were apprentices living in digs owned by kindly old widows. When streets were cobbled and trams were functional. When cinemas had soul and weren't glorified sheds.

Proper movies.

Beautiful.

Time for another rewatch...

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY - THE GREATEST FILM EVER MADE. That is all.

I won't give it a 'something-out-of-five' rating as there is simply no way that this film can be rated at such a meagre scale and comparing it to ANY other motion picture is completely and utterly pointless. It would be like comparing a Bengal Tiger to a cockroach.

Snake-Eyes' word on this is LAW.

Right! Re-watching The Greatest Film Ever Made as I type ("Wh-Who the hell is that?! One bastard goes in another comes out!"). Big shout to a certain good buddy who was concerned - "Don't worry mate! I won't let the blu-ray get worn out!"

Eli Wallach as Tuco remains Snake-Eyes' favourite cinematic character of all time - simply magnificent! Sergio Leone originally wanted him to play the part of 'Juan' in DUCK YOU SUCKER / A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE but the studio insisted on a bigger, more established name for 'audience appeal' and it was Rod Steiger who landed the role. Damn shame, it would've been a MUCH better film if Wallach had been cast. I think DUCK is the most flawed of Leone's films and Steiger does at times seem like he's doing a bad Tuco impersonation.

I reckon ye mean least awesome.

Though I reckon there's a chance that any similarities between character movements/style may be down to Leone's penchant for acting out scenes to convey what he was after. So similarities between the performances of Steiger and Wallach may be them both being similar to Leone's sketches. I know that Steiger's finger flexing while observing the bank in DUCK was a mimic of Leone.

I reckon you're quite right there boaby. ALL of Leone's films are nothing short of awesome (although, admittedly I have never seen COLOSSUS OF RHODES) and I have them all on blu-ray now. Only thing is, I have to be in a particular mood to watch WEST, DYNAMITE and AMERICA whereas I can (and do) watch the Dollars Films over and over again! They're just so much damn fun to watch! Snake-Eyes has ALWAYS been a fan of the spaghetti westerns but Sergio's films had that cerain something that other directors within that genre lacked - probably the only other who came close with his own sense of style and dark gritiness in his material was Sergio Corbucci but he's still leagues behind the master. Just out of curiosity boaby, have you ever read this book...?

It's a must-read for anyonw with even a passing interest in Leone's cinema.

Whats the Blu-ray transfer like? I'm reading that the MGM release isn't great and the Italian version is better but doesn't have an English audio track.

I have the U.S. MGM blu-ray and it sounds and looks brilliant; this is the absolute finest we'll ever see GBU. 'Dollars' 1 & 2 are on the way too
