I swear I heard Christopher Frayling mention in one of the commentaries that Clint Eastwood is actually a different character in all 3 films...

I still don't think you could really classify it as a prequel though, at least not in the sense that we think of prequels today or even in a Temple of Doom kinda way.

Reading into the making of it, it seems Leone and the studio just wanted to make another western adventure featuring three rogues going after some gold. It just so happened he convinced Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef to work with him again and (for Eastwood at least) play similar characters. I understand that some minor characters were played by the same actors (Mario Brega, Luigi Pistilli etc) throughout the trilogy but its a stretch when comparing it to Van Cleef. I mean if we're using the logic that Van Cleef plays two different and major characters in the trilogy (that both feature on the posters) then Eastwood's "Man With No Name" could very well be a different character altogether (this is the only film in the series he's called Blondie) poncho aside of course (in fact the poncho could very well just have been an in-joke/sly reference to the previous two films).

And lets not forget Leone wanted Eastwood for Once Upon A Time In The West, if that had happened then we would probably consider that as part of the Dollars films despite it having no real story connection to the rest. Chances are that TGTBATU is a western than Leone made which as far as story and characters are concerned has very little to do with the others and is pretty much standalone. Its a bit of a stretch for it to be really described as a prequel.

As for Silas' claim that its 'common knowledge' that its a prequel then I would suggest otherwise. Reading up on this online finds no mention of the word prequel anywhere. Even listening to the dvd commentary by Richard Schickel (a presumed expert on this) finds no mention of this being set before the other Dollars film, at least to my recollection. Which reminds me I must listen to that commentary again one day as its really good.

EDIT: Stomper ^ just made my point in one sentence.

I've watched all three films with Frayling's commentaries several times - Eastwood DEFINITELY plays the same character. It's just a very 'loose' continuity.

AWESOME!! Remember to watch 'em with the brilliantly insightful commentaries by Leone Biographer, Sir Christopher Frayling.

Heh I use to have those posters - the last set on DVD had codes to collect inside each movie and you could send away from them.

Was on IMDB the other day and couldnt believe Eli Wallach is now nearly 96 which wouldve made him near 50 at the time of shooting this film! Always liked his cheeky face and Tuco suited him perfectly. Managed to get the OST's of the trilogy the other day as well and have them on most ohours of the day atm hehe. Really need to get watching them again like I used to regularly as a kid...

Morricone is THE MAESTRO! 'Ecstasy of Gold' ranks amongst the all-time great score tracks of all time.

The most famous film score of all time, and the best, only Jaws came close to being more famous, but what rock band could use it without having a laugh.

Snake-Eyes was asked on another thread, if he actually lives for this film. The answer is, YES. It makes no sense how unbelievably f**king AWESOME THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY is!  I often get peed off at work 'cos I know I have to wait some hours before I get home and have the opportunity to give the blu-ray a spin. If I had a time machine, one of the first 'historical events' I'd go back to witness would be this film's premiere back in 1966.

My dad told me he saw this film twice back in '66 when it came out, said people back then were shocked by the violence and language.

TGTBATU TRIVIA: Did you know the theme tune was released as a single and made it to #1 in the charts?

That's cool Spald! I'm always fascinated by the impact and reception that my favourite films had upon their initial release.  Hugo Montenegro's cover version was the one that hit the charts I believe
