So there's at least one female fan, even though like The Thing it's very male/guys film, all sweat and guns as the missus say's.

LOL evil bill - your missus knows the score;  I'd say THE THING is definitely in the same category. hmm, speaking of which...

It's just come out on Blu Ray. Just read Amazon reviews and customers are complaining that it's not the extended cut and that the picture quality is poor...

But, I've read reviews from other sites saying that there is a 2 Disk collectors edition with the extended cut and picture restoration so I'm confused.

Anyhoo, here's a blu ray review with picture comparisons.

One of THE best films ever made.

It's a masterpiece. It's fascinating, believable, deep, and well-developed. I will never forget Frank's face or Harmonica's eyes or Cheyenne's warmth.

I believe i was on a similar path with TGTBATU. I absolutely loved the first 2 viewings. But since i saw OUATITW, TGTBATU isnt as enjoyable anymore. Still magnificent, but it kinda died for me right there.

OUATITW gets better and better with each viewing, and dominates TGTBATU imo. Leone's best film.

Damn! I'm confused!! ok so, I want GBU on Blu-Ray that has EVERYTHING! especially the new Christopher Frayling Commentary. Is the U.S. version gonna be region-free?

F**k it. I don't care - I love this film so much I'll just snare every version of Blu-Ray I have to til I'm satisfied.

Since Searchers has been mentioned just thought I'd reiterate my dislike of it. Could have been great if Ethan killed Debbie at the end, then we have an interesting film about hate and prejudice - instead it's just rubbish. "I'm takin' you home Debbie, you ain't gotta be no filthy Injun anymore, you're goin' be a wholesome white girl once more" (vomit)

I don't care if Spielberg and so many other rate it so highly.

Leone's trilogy is the best western.

I saw THE SEARCHERS once, many years ago. I just find John Wayne very boring. Eastwood & Leone defined the Western.

I wouldn't go as far as to call The Searchers "boring". It is a good film. Personally I don't think it is the masterpiece many critics say it is. It is a typical Ford western which means it is a moral tale with rather straightforward emotions. It is wonderfully shot and directed. Wayne is decent enough and the story interesting.
But there are some serious flaws.
The continuity is amateurish. People having different hairdo's in same scene, guns and knives changing hands during a scene.
The acting. I am used to 30's -and-up- films, so normally it doesn't bother me at all. But some scenes in this film are simply awful. Hunter is especially awful and offputting. The humour would only make some pensioners laugh because this was corny even for 1950's standards.

But still a good film though.

TGTBATU is a better film though. Brilliant even.

I was listening to the soundtrack to GBU as I was getting ready for work today - as I often do - beautiful score! 'The Ecstasy of Gold' is Snake-Eyes' favourite movie scene ever.

Agreed. Unbelievable scene. The best scene with music ever. Can see it a 1000 times and still having chills.

This film is easily the best one out of the whole of Sergio Leone's dollars trilogy and what a way to end it. Absolutely fantastic! So influential, graphic, ambitious and amazing. It's a work of materpiece, I dont think any other western film has even come close.

I watched this as a kid growing up and still watch it now every now and again, it never bores me. This is a fine example of film that got me into movies in the first place. The ending showdown climax, is by far without a single doubt the greatest movie climax ever filmed!!!

Did you know Clint Eastwood decided not to ever work with Sergio Leone ever again after this, as Eli Wallach who played 'Tuco' stole every scene he was in and pushed poor clint out of the spotlight and in a way wasnt seen as the central character.

For me the three greatest westerns are this film, The Searchers and the Wild Bunch. I did used to rate Once Upon A Time In The West even higher, but I watched it again and found how shallow it really was.
Anyway, every frame of this movie, and every note of Ennio Morricone's score is an absolute delight, and for me it ranks up there with my favourite films of all time.
By the way Evil Bill, who the hell is Sam Peckham? Is he the bad boy of Only Fools and Horses?

Jesus Christ! Did I just read that?

Anyway, I love this film, not the most profound of westerns, but so damned entertaining and works on so many levels it is just impossible to hate.

perfect excuse to revive this thread - I haven't seen my favourite film ever made since I was 33! (I hit the age of 34 a few weeks ago). I'm gonna pop it in the player when I get home from work.

y'know, Snake-Eyes is still pissed off that this has not been released on blu-ray in the UK yet! all of the crap that gets chucked onto the format these days and I can't get this classic. I know for a fact that the commentary by Sir Christopher Frayling (which was recorded a few years ago; I know this 'cos I met Sir Frayling and he signed a few books for me - great guy!) is on the US disc and we NEED this talk-track as it is probably a THOUSAND times more informative than the one by Richard Schickel who just talks about stuff that is really just common knowledge and sheds no light on Leone's film-making process.

From Snake-Eyes' collection...

This was (along with the novelisations for A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS and FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE) part of what became a series of 'Dollar Western' novels by Joe Millard - very cool stuff! this book gave a little more insight into the characters, especially Tuco and there is also a bit of back story on the 'real' Bill Carson and how the gold was originally stolen and then hidden in the grave. there are also a few changes; here, Tuco refers to the Eastwood character as 'Whitey' and Angel-Eyes is called 'Sentenza' as he was named in the original script and the Italian version of the film.

evil bill - I enjoyed the restored scenes immensely! and you're right, the enhanced picture & sound are truly astounding. I'm BIG about blu-ray now bill! although, I am very choosy about which titles I buy - can't wait for the Dollars Trilogy to make it onto HD.

coolstar - I like blue!
