Alcohol, on a pound-for-pound basis, is a lot more fattening than most foods and you'd be surprised at the number of people around who are fat merely because of drink - a good acquaintance of mine must be pushing 30 stone now and I know for a fact that he doesn't really eat unhealthily, only has three standard meals a day and absolutely hates junk food. That 30 stone is ALL beer and he is a massive beer drinker. I think people who can attribute a lot of weight gain to alcohol find it easier to lose weight (as long as they can abstain) and keep it off than people who have had food related weight gain. I'm not much of a drinker, so it's thankfully not an issue for me (god knows how big I would have got if I was a drinker as well!!!!). Completely understand how difficult it is with the wife and kids, though. What I ended up doing was, basically, eating different meals to my wife and often forgoing any treats and desserts that she fancied. It was hard at first, but eventually I got into the swing of it and it soon became second nature. It's made it a bit easier for me lately as my wife has been told by her doc that she has to lose weight (long history of illness) and neither of us want to raise our daughter as a fatty, so now all three of us often eat the same healthy foods, have the odd treat and that's that. I would also say try not to lose weight too quickly - your 4 and a half stone in the same number of months is, I think, way too fast - it took me about 18 months of doing it sensibly to lose the same amount. I think (having done it both ways) the faster you lose weight, the more likely you are to put it back on, whist a steady loss of 1-2 pounds a week is, I've found, much more conducive to keeping it off permanently. Good luck!
