To mark his 60th birthday, we celebrate the genius of Steven Spielberg by counting down (in no particular order) the greatest moments here, amazing stories and monumental impact of the world's greatest film director...

Denied!!!
In no particular order you say. Shame, I like it when you put things in order then we have something to debate about!
His greatest achievement is surely Jaws, closely followed by his facial hair.

IMO his greatest moment was bringing us Indiana Jones. The perfect cinematic achievement of escapist adventure.

I can watch films for many reasons ... but being thrilled, amused and, most vitally, damn well entertained is always top.

And Indy has that in spades.

My choices would be making my dreams come to life with Jurassic Park and being able to help Back to the Future get made. For that I am forever grateful.

The film is loosely based on the story of Sgt.Frederick 'Fritz' Niland,a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne, whose three brothers were killed within a four-day period from June 6th,1944...Niland refused to leave France after receiving the news and it took a Congressional Presidential Order from Eisenhower to finally ensure his safe return to the USA...

To me there's no question about Spielberg's genius, even though I was never that particularly a fan of his (I'm member of the Kubrick School of Cinema).

I just have to accept Spielberg's gigantic abilities - even though many of his films aren't per se especially interesting to me he nevertheless manages to make something special out of the most tedious popcorn-blockbuster-fare: War Of The Worlds vs. Independence Day, anyone? No matter how big Roli Emmerich made his space ships, no matter how hard he tried to jerk that tear out of the audience, Spielberg made the much more suspenseful, interesting and intelligent film - in a time when we, the audience, have already seen 'anything'. It wasn't the size of the effects, it was how they were used. And how they were accompanied by actual characters (Tom Cruise as an actual loser!) instead of mere cardboard pastiches of people (Will Smith havin' fun kickin' alien butt).

With Munich, Spielberg just recently made his - to me, at least - most interesting film ever. Schindler's List may be his best, but with Munich, he seems to have entered a phase of creative puberty. This state of turmoil has made the movie facetted in a way I would have never imagined, certainly not from a man who could (and very rarely does) resort to formula. But he didn't, and made a film which still has enough Spielberg ingredients to make it unmistakeable for anything else, but also dares to let a huge amount of ambiguity in the mix. I have only one word for this: kudos.

Whenever I, being a wannabe-filmmaker myself, see a making-of of any of his films, it sends me shivers down the back, seeing how this man understands and loves film, and how I am very unlikely to even remotely match such talent.

And this comes from a Kubrick-fan.

Spielberg is without question the worlds greatest director. There is no genre he cannot turn his hand to. The man could shoot paint drying and make it entertaining and thought provoking. How many other directors have had such an impact on the world? He continues to dazzle us with his genius and is at the top of his game. He's an inspiration to me and is the reason why I want to make films. Long may he continue to deliver films that inspire, entertain and provoke discussion.

Considering he spelt a lot of names wrong, we may have an actual troll. Spielberg is the lead Movie Brat, and as it is, he's Empire writers and reader's favourite.

Speaking of which, my top 'Berg films:

1. Schindler's List.
2. E.T.
3. Jaws.
4. Munich.
5. Raiders of the Lost Ark.
6. The Last Crusade.
7. Jurassic Park.
8. Saving Private Ryan.
9. A.I.
10. Close Encounters.

Spielberg is an excellent director; everyone agrees on that.  But the best alive?  Not while Werner Herzog, Martin Scorsese, or Roman Polanski are alive.  Those men are all visionaries, while Spielberg is a master of crowd-pleasing pap.  He's made some of the most fun and thilling movies ever, but aside from Munich, his work lacks the moral complexity that must be present for a director to be an artist.

Apart from the bit he did direct in it anyway...

It's a slapdash, crude, cartoony film anyway. A decent watch, but no classic.

I'd like to take this as an opportunity to congratulate Steven Spielberg with his 60th birthday and to thank him for all the wonderful work he's done over the past 30-odd years.

Here's to the next 60!!

There are literally dozens, hundreds of reasons I could list why Spielberg rules but the one that outshines them all happened a couple of weeks ago.  I felt the time was right so I sat down and watched E.T with my 4 year old daughter Charlotte.  At the end as the credits were rolling I sat back and looked over at her to ask her what she thought, she hadn't said a word throughout which in it's self would be top of the list but what i got was totally unexpected, she just looked at me with big red eyes and sobbed her heart out.

When she had calmed down I asked her why she was crying as I wanted to know which particular scene had upset her or if she was just deliriously happy with the ending as E.T has always had this effect on me.  She just looked at me and in between sobs said "I....don't...know...why...i'm...crying"  and off she she went again. This in turn started me off so there we were dad and daughter blubbing for the no apparent reason.

So that is why for me.  There have been hours of fantastic moments in my life watching Spielberg's films that will be with me forever but that moment and to have that effect on a 4 year old is truely magical.

The man is beyond this world, he is an enigma of which we will never see the like again.  Happy birthday Steven

Two? Wow, pretty prolific isnt he?

Just cos he's your favourite director in no way makes him great, and just because you don't rate Spielberg in no way makes him shite.

As for calling Saving Private Ryan propaganda, sheesh...

Very nice tribute, Empire!  Cheers - but this should have been in the magazine as well.
Long live Stephen the Great, and here's hoping he directs another 25 (or more) great movies!

(Although I rarely post here these days, I felt I must give what's due to both...)

Wow, amazing tribute... Honestly, it feels good to see some people doing something that big for him, he deserves all the love we can give and he's definitely my favorite director forever :)

And why does Spielberg rule?

I could pick thousands of reason but just like that here are a bunch of them...

- E.T., it was fun, it was fascinating, it was beautiful, it was poetic, it was incredible, and it made me cry. Hearing even two notes of the theme song is overwhelming! Absolutely fantastic.
- Indiana Jones, no explanations needed, just Indy :)
- Jurassic Park, This pure adrenalin joyous fabulous amazing crazy feeling we all felt the first time Alan Grant discovered the Dinos, and fell on his knees. I've seen the movie millions of time, and my emotion is intact!
- The incredible beauty of Empire of The Sun, its esoterism and its surrealistic moments.
- Only him could make a "fight" between a car and a truck that stressing
- Close Encounters, brilliant.
- Even if A.I. was not so great, every "big" Spielberg moment felt wonderful, somehow.
- His incredible talent to film all kind of stories with an "indecent" genius
- Schindler's List, etc etc etc...

Long live Spielberg, the genius, the entertainer, the story teller, the incredible director...

PS : ahaha thats my first post, I've decided to stop being a lurker around here, I love this website too much ;)

The first wave in Omaha beach was ALL black soldiers, not whites like in the film.

Also i said that Spielberg is a very good director. He is just not a great one.I never call him shite.Maybe you should not post when you are drinking,lad...

Can anyone here can imagine what movie Spielberg will do if someone give him the script for "Taxi Driver"?

You're entitled to your opinion, but I think you need to expand upon your above statement. At the moment it's more of a throw-away comment.
