How did Burton destroy the Penguin image? He chose a superb actor in DeVito and did a truly fantastic job of the whole Batman era. The penguin is and always has been a 'monster'. That fact is supported by the fact that he is upper class.

Read the comics before you pick a fight. Penguin is not some mutated monster.

Neither did the Joker ever have a name or an origin until The Killing Joke years later and that is still in dispute.

Burton took liberties at times with characters, with an abundance of histories without having to invent his own.

He killed The Joker, for fuck sake.

I think adding Talia to the mix might overload the sequel. We know we're getting The Joker, and probably Penguin. There's also been rumours of Black Mask.

The only way I'd like Talia in it is if she remains 'undercover' for the sequel, and the viewer simply thinks she is a love interest. Then have the revelation at the end that she is Ra's Al Ghul's daughter, and then increase her storyline in the third movie.

Yeah, this franchise needs some character arcs that happen over more than just one movie.

i thought it was 2 face not penguin for the other bad guy

what do we think about jonny depp as the joker :S

also, i watched mask of the phantasm, the cartoon movie of batman, i seriously suggest watching. such a great short film.

i quite like the idea of ra's al ghul's daughter, because if u research ra's al ghul, he is infact imortal, which mean he could be in the next one. my hope would be that the concentrate on joker and batmans frist meeting, and included the creation of 2face.....that would be my wish

any comments?

The Joker is the greatest comic book character ever, villian or anything else (screw Lex.) I agree that they shouldn't overshadow him with Talia but as has been said before, Nolan pulled off multiple villains well. However, The Joker is possibly the most integral character to Batman. Not Catwoman, Robin, Gordon or any other villain. You are never closer to anyone else except your own reflection.

Harvey Dent is in the next one, then becomes Two Face in 3

I'd really like him to become Two-Face at the end of the 2nd movie so that it's left on a cliffhanger but either way is alright with me.

Little bit wary about Johnny Depp - I don't doubt he could nail the character, but it could be difficult to look at The Joker and forget about who the actor playing him is. I suppose with the make-up job he should be unrecognisable. He's only 5'10 and The Joker should be taller, but that can be masked with camera trickery.

Personally I'm all for Lachy Hulme. A complete unknown (pretty much), and I assume he's a very good actor if he's up for the role.

Love Kiefer Sutherland for Harvey Dent but he just doesn't have the physical presence needed for the role.

I might as well throw my opinion in seeing as there's no real confirmed news on sequel casting. Hell, no-one's really confirmed which villains are supposed to be having a crack at Batman this time but based on all the hoo-hah on such sites as Batman on Film (excellent site) here are my thoughts:

Harvey Dent/Two face: Guy Pearce (think of his performances in Ravenous and Memento)
The Joker: Paul Bettany or Josh Lucas
The Penguin: Bob Hoskins (IS The Penguin)
Roman Sionis/Black Mask: Barry Pepper
Salvatore "Boss" Maroni: Ray Liotta (who else?)
Talia Al Ghul: Roselyn Sanchez (Rush Hour 2, she's hot hot hot and dangerous looking)

He might turn at the end of 2, I meant to say hes Two Face in 3. I'm in favour of Hulme too, he has a very interesting look and his eyes make him easily the most intimidating of all the candidates ive heard, which seems to be every actor under the sun thats ever smiled. I've only seen him in Revolutions and Four Jacks, which was a crap film but hes easily the best thing about it. Either him or Paul Bettany, someone like Liev Schrieber or Pearce for Two Face

Harvey Dent/Two-Face: Liev Schrieber
The Joker: Paul Bettany
The Penguin: Geoffrey Rush
Roman Sionis/Black Mask: Peter Sarsgaard
Salvatore "Boss" Maroni: Ray Liotta
Sarah Essen: Julianne Moore

Vicki Vale: Rachel McAdams

Let's see....you have Falcone still locked up in Arkham, so there is a power struggle. Sal Maroni is trying to take over as head of the mob, but Black Mask is slowly doing the same. Black Mask is in cahoots with The Penguin to flood Gotham with more guns. Black Mask and Maroni are battling it out, but The Joker is causing chaos, killing key figures about town and infuriating both potential mob bosses. He is a demented serial killer who is driving both the mob and the police nuts.

Batman and Gordon are trying to find The Joker and put a stop to his killings, and they link up with Harvey Dent. Dent is dating Rachel Dawes. Rachel is killed early in the film by The Joker, giving Batman a more personal vendetta and beginning Dent's descent.

Then you have Vicky Vale investigating Roman Sionis (nobody knows he is Black Mask), which puts her in danger and leads to a relationship between Vale and Wayne, with a personal feud between Sionis and Wayne occuring (both not realising they're fighting as Black Mask and Batman).

By the end you have Black Mask installed as the mob boss (showing that the 'freaks' are here to stay), The Joker locked up in Arkham Asylum and Harvey Dent scarred by Sal Maroni. Batman gets a personal success in locking up Rachel's killer, but fails to protect his friend Harvey Dent. As for Vicki Vale, Wayne should choose to end things with her in order to protect her.

why do we need to see old characters again?  keep it new and fresh like they did in begins, with a villian that hasnt been in any of the other films.

its crap seeing someone elses view of the same  story.

No it isn't.  The P.O.V episode in Batman: TAS is considered a great entry into the series.

And much of what people are suggesting are different stories not the same one. But I agree why do we need Vicki? There's plenty of Batgirls: Summer Gleeson, Silver St Cloud, Talia and the ultimate one, Catwoman.

Didn't Dent originally go out with Poison Ivy first?

I was pretty sure it happened in a few of the comics too. I could be wrong though.

I just put Vicki Vale down because I want to see McAdams in the movie and she would fit the journalist type role. I do want to see Catwoman though...

I only really know the modern origins and I think he was married before he became Two Face. Oh well, I'd rather have Dent lacking a girlfriend but rooting a hatred towards crime due to his upbringing.

Oh and Barefoot, the girls I listed are also journalists except for Talia Al Ghul and Catwoman.

I think it would have been so much better if instead of having Katie Holmes character in Batman Begins they had put Harvey Dent.

I wasn't a fan of the character and it was made worse by Katie Holmes.

I guess they had to have a woman somewhere there in the mix otherwise it would have seemed like one big gang-bang.

I suppose that a female character was necessary but Dawes was completely and utterly irritating. Conformed to every part of the hollywood female archetype and as such contradicted the whole film which was original for its context and blockbuster placement.

I think WB mandate a large female role sadly, one of the very few restrictions. I could do without a love interest in the next one, Batman has enough on his plate.

Can't the large female role be a lesbain? It will still attract the punters and it will leave Brucie clear of any awful love interest.

Yes, but if we make the couple a mixed race lesbian entanglement then it will balance it out.

Do you think that Nolan will go down the 'Big, Bad Harv' route in dealing with Two Face?

i really enjoyed the first one but i hope the next one doesn't fail because of hollywood companies butting in. however with caine, freeman and bale all signed up for the next it's looking good. one thing, however, the scene where batman intimidates/tortures that detective is just plain funny.
