One of my Xmas books uses the phrase 'double bill' for Fireflies and Totoro - apparently because the former was a well-known book it was easier to get funding and they piggybacked Totoro onto that.

And that makes one of the weirdest double-bills I have ever come across!
A book I have says that they were released together - Totoro as a cheerful antidote. I was planning to watch them like this but I still have Totoro unseen...

Totoro's history is a very weird one.
It's a film that Miyazaki was trying to get made for years but was constantly turned down by producers who simply couldn't see the appeal (!) - it was eventually pitched to a publisher (Shinchosa) who wanted to branch out into movies, who held the book rights to Graveyard of the Fireflies which they were trying to find a studio willing to turn into a film for them and finding it immensely difficult to do so.
So it made perfect sense for Ghibli and Shinchosa to collaborate - Ghibli agreed to make Graveyard, and Shinchosa agreed to distribute Totoro.  It was a massive risk (just to make 2 films at the same time is pretty much unheard of), but it did unspectacularly OK at first thanks to the double-billing - schoolchildren were bussed in to watch Graveyard and Totoro was shown afterwards - but it wasn't until two years later when Miyazaki finally caved in to requests from a toy company to make little cuddly Totoros that the film gained the success that it deserved

I'd buy a cuddly little Totoro

Fans wanting to catch any they might have missed (all with Eng dubs I presume), Film 4 has a Ghibli a day on next week, around 1pm. Porco Rosso, Laputa, Cagliostro, Mononoke etc I think.

It looks like Ghibli have gone and made a film without anyone realising it (well, me at least).

As awesome as they are, I couldn't justify spending that much!

On another note, taking the kids with me to see Ponyo next week on my birthday. Can't wait!

They have a fluffy catbus!! Must must have

I do actually have little characters from Spirited Away - lots of tiny little models, a set I got on Ebay. I wish I'd asked about this before Xmas - I could have given little Totoro's to the little girls I bought the DVD for.

Studio Ghibli's The Borrowers

There was a release on http://www.ghibliworld.com/news.html just before christmas. Pretty exciting news. The only downside really is that it means the new Takahata film isnt the next one due for release. Its such a shame he hasnt made more films.

The other main bit of news on there is that Hayao Miyazaki is currently making a new short film (10 mins was the guess on there) which they are talking about releasing online when it is ready.

Those Totoro toys look amazing

No idea they were adapting the Borrowers, should be worth a look. Ponyo is never going to get a release at a cinema near me, is there any dates for DVD releases etc?

This is not removing my drool.

I wonder if it is too late to make Valentine's Day demands?

Edit - I mean, it does also come with the Totoro!

Ponyo was great. It captures that great child like feeling that Totoro did. Brilliant animation, fantastic score, go see it!

Odeon in Tamworth.

I know, I'm scared too!

It seems to have quite a wide release, as my sister is taking my little brother to see it at their local Vue.

Yeah, my Totoro is about the size of that Cat Bus, but MY Cat Bus is smaller than the one above. Not a lot smaller though, and it doesn't have passengers.

Just rewatched Monoke hime (my first anime EVER) and it was every bit as good as I remember. Longer "rewiew" in the Princess Mononoke thread in the film reviews subforum.

2 disc dvd (no hint of the extras) £10.99 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ponyo-Disc-DVD-Hayao-Miyazaki/dp/B0032UXQWY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1267645121&sr=8-1
Blu-ray + dvd £16.99 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ponyo-Blu-ray-DVD-Combi-Pack/dp/B0032YNDA0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1267645121&sr=8-2

Just noticed Howl's Moving Castle is on BBC2 on Saturday (14:00), so a good opportunity for anyone who hasn't seen it to do so.

Spirited Away is brilliant. One of my other recommendations would be Howl's Moving Castle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57r9jjqzJJk

So... Ponyo wasnt that great. I mean it was okay and not the disaster that was Earthsea, but the plot just wasnt good enough and it was full of pacing problems. Nowhere near as good as the likes of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke for example. Looked nice I guess.

Ghibli comes to the PS3:
http://kotaku.com/5571557/see-the-trailer-for-ghiblis-ps3-game?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+kotaku%2Ffull+%28Kotaku%29

Odd, given that Miyazaki has for years opposed videogame tie-ins of his studio's work.  Then again, he was opposed to any licencing for any reason until he finally allowed a toy company to make cuddly versions of his popular-but-not-exactly-famous Totoro characters...
