Just having a conversation with my amigo, Rick, about subtitles and dubbing in films.

See i dont mind dubbing, but only in old school Jackie Chan films, but for others like the modern day films (battle royale, oldboy, hero) id want subtitles.

What you think my people?

Seriously, there's no argument here; it has to be subtitles all the time.  I think the only time dubbing can be justified is in animation (like Spirited Away), though I'd always watch the film in its original format first.

I can watch animated films dubbed but if its a live action film its gotta be subtitled. Nightwatch was great with its subtitles. Just jazzed it up a little.

Dubbing a live action film is tantamount to butchery in my opinion, the film is supposed to be seen and heard in the language of origin and it spoils the whole tone when that is taken out. There is a certain tone in foreign languages that adds to the film, and it is terrible for that to be taken out.
As people have said though, the Studio Ghibli films are dubbed very well, and its the only time Ive ever preferred the dubbed version to the subtitled version.

Subtitles. On everything. Even when watching Hollyoaks.

I usually prefer subtitles, but for obvious reasons when I showed my 8 year old brother Spirited Away I went for the dubbed version.

You know what? So do I. I really don't know why but when I'm watching tv, I press the subtitle button. I've done it since I was a kid (ceefax page 888 ) The same when I'm watching a dvd, I put the subs on.. Its odd, they just don't distract me whatsoever.

Dubbing foreign films should now be a crime.

Personally Subtitles...I can understand spanish but even so I like to read the subs. I like hearing the language to foreign films it adds to the mystique of it.

I'm still sulking at the fact that City Of The Lost Children isn't available on DVD with the subtitles though.

Do you mean we should learn the language the film is in or all films should be in English?

Or are you just being a shit-stirrer?

The only film i've ever preffered dubbing in is Advent Children...and thats only because it was done by people with some proper acting talent.

I've found that usually with dubbing, you miss a lot of the emotion from the actors

As you can probably tell from my av', I really like My Neighbour Totoro. I think the dubbing on that doesn't take away any of the great experience that is that film. It's fantastic in any language.

I think the general consensus is that its ok to have dubbing, only if its done correctly, the Studio Ghibli are a great example (i do have all the films and prefer the dubbing), for me, for some reason i like the dubbing on the old school Jackie Chan films too, on the basis that it makes it more fun for me to watch, cause the dubbing is part of the show!

For the more serious films, the original language is a must, no doubt about it.

Still no one for dubbing outright......... i am in a proper movie forum mind you, so maybe i shouldnt expect anything

I've only liked the recent Pixar dubs of Ghibli films, with the earlier ones, I go back to subtitles. With the Chan films, he does dub himself, so I don't think it's too bad. The only problems with subs is they can occasionally obscure bits of the picture - the opening credits of Kiki's Delivery Service for example.

I think that even some english films should be dubbed. The Matrix sequels might make more sense if the language was changed a little.

On a more serious not though, some films are automatically dubbed - the dollars trilogy for instance - and no-one complains.

However I usually prefer subtitles, since it does affect the flow of the film for it to be dubbed and is usually distracting when it is done badly.  I often put subtitles on english DVDs if I've seen them before, and my brother insists on it because he misses the point otherwise.  NEVER on a comedy though, ruins it.

Subtitles as dubbing completly ruins the film

Though Subtitles can be hard to read at times, especially white subtitles on a clear background

Oh subtitles any day. Dubbing always looks wrong and makes a film look stupid and hard to take seriously. Only useful and needed for the dyslexic (I`m being serious by the way and not taking the mickey).

thing is, they could do a really good job on dubbing, and have really good actors providing the voices, but they rarely bother..

on the subject of subs.. do you ever get the feeling that if the film your watching was in english, the lines would just come of as completly ridiculous? i can't think of any examples, but some lines seem to only work in a foriegn language. actually, in japanese stuff, mainly anime, when a character does a reeeeally drawn out shout, or calls someones name for a massively extended period of time, with the dub on it just sounds stupid..

Dubbing is a creation of hellish proportions. It should only be allowed to be used in animated films and that's it.

Subtitles are superior.

Subtitles are the best way to go and once you've watched a few, you don't even notice them. I agree with the above post, animation is probably the only acceptable film to use sub-titles on as long as they're done properly.

Subtitles, I find dubbing more distracting. Subtitles just don't bother me, being into martial arts films I've always watched subtitled films. Strange thing though, does anyone else find they turn the sound up higher when watching subtitled films than when watching films in English? I do and I can't explain why
