Liked the Saw one..

I hate drawing myself... somehow i still ended up doing it on a school for 4 bloody years... no work scanned, so you can't see it, but it's all rubbish anyway.

My mate however is a true artist.

Quint, your paintings are fucking awesome.  Really.  And I say that as a qualified art historian.

I love your Schindler's List one in particular, but they are all amazing.  If you're not a professional artist of some sort then you bloody well should be.

You're welcome, dude.

Is the Benicio Del Toro painting in oils too?  It almost looks like pastels.  I like that your style varies, from ultra-realistic to a technique that's more loose, like the Del Toro image.  Is it supposed to be landscape or is it portrait?

Judging by there, I hope you get a first; imho you deserve it.  I love art, but I feel there's too much emphasis on concept today, and not enough on sheer, raw talent.  You have a wonderful eye.

Ha, embarrasing moment for me-it's actually brad pitt from the troy poster, its in pencil crayon. was meant to be a portrait but photographed it like that but i can't remember why. cheers mate-doubt ill get a 1st tho, need a bit more work really but im so lazy, and, as you say, the degree focuses on concept a bit more then i would like.

Aaah shite, no that's my bad; on re-looking it's definitely Pitt!  The hair threw me, and you have to admit, Pitt looks stunningly like Del Toro when lying on his back!  *wilts*

That's a difficult medium; wow, I wish I had your skill.  But I'm very lazy indeed, heh heh.  I can understand why concept is important, but I don't think it's the be-all-and-end-all.  And when a fupping flashing lightbulb wins the Turner Prize it annoys the living hell out of me!  But it seems you have to shock these days to be recognised (Emin, Hirst, et al) and I think that's really sad.   For me, talent will always come first.  And of course, the best artists combine the two, like Picasso (Guernica is one of my favourite works).

Who are your favourite artists?  I've always had an undying passion for Caravaggio.  You do chiaroscuro very well.

Ah twink u legend! right thats it, whenever i need an image posted in the forum its ur job. I'll do a shit line like "a picture says a thousand words, right twink..." and u do ur stuff-what a team! Caravaggio is one of my favorites as it turns out, as is glenn brown, would like to try something on the scale he does, but course deadlines mean it aint gonna happen soon. Had to look up chiaroscuro, but thanks very much. i think its easier to do dynamic light and shadow and make something look real, much harder doind flat tones to get the same effect. what kind of art work do you  tend to do/buy twink?

I'm a particular fan of chiaroscuro, it's one of the reason's I love Caravaggio so much (I think he virtually invented it).  I wish I could afford to buy art work!  As for what I like to do, I like to draw pencil portraits.  Faces fascinate me -  and I get the feeling, judging by your work, that you're rather fond of that subject yourself.

These are my two favourite Caravaggio paintings:

I could rave about this painting (The Entombment) forever.  I love everything about it - the perfect, fan-shaped composition; the almost staged look it has (doesn't the lighting give that impression?  Isn't it almost like theatrical-lights?); the way Nicodemus is looking right at the viewer, engaging us; Mary Cleophas's arms raised to heaven; the Virgin (who looks old, for once) stretching her arms out to reflect the crucifixion ... oh just everything.  Caravaggio's foreshortening is also exceptional; this is a poor reproduction, but Nicodemus's elbow and the corner of the tombstone seem almost to jut out of the canvas.  It is perfect in every conceivable way.

This is The Betrayal of Christ and it's beautiful.  It's very baroque, with that billowing drapery, and also a mixture of the classical - the apostle's dress - and (Caravaggio's) contemporary - the soldier's armour.  I love the contrasting panic of the apostle on the far left, with the sad resignation on Christ's face as he is knocked backwards by the soldiers (his clasped hands help to indicate the movement.)  Once again the scene seems almost set-up; frozen in time at the moment Judas kissed Christ, like a snapshot of the past.  The lighting excludes the extraneous; we are in no doubt as to what we should be focusing on.  And that swarthy figure on the far right is a self-portrait of Caravaggio himself.  Oh it's just genius.

I hope I'm not boring everyone, but I really could praise this guy all day.
