The Beast of War - Following a Soviet tank crew being stalked through the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan by the miffed locals. Easy to put people off this film, as it was directed by Kevin Reynolds who went on to the much maligned (But quite good imo) Waterworld, and with an American cast including Jason Patric and Stephen Baldwin, but this really is a gem. Victim of a quashed marketing campaign in the 80's. No fudging as well, lots of actual Russian hardware on show so people with a tank fetish will enjoy it

Probably the best film Paul Schrader has made that Scorcese hasn't been involved with, Blue Collar is a great film, and Richard Pryor shows he can act in serious flms as well as stuff like Stir Crazy and Silver Streak (although apparently the on-screen tensions were carried over off screen too).

STONE:This aussie road movie was made around the time of Mad Max,and was a great Biker movie, but more on the lines of Easy Rider.Members of the Grave Diggers Biker Gang, are being murdered one by one, after one member witnessed the murder of a Political leader.Stone is an undercover cop sent in to join the gang, and find the killers. After foiling an another murder attempt, there leader The Undertaker, accepts him into the gang. There are some great motorbike chase's,all filmed for real at high speed through Sidney's street's.Also a huge bikers funeral, which had hundreds of real biker gangs involed. And the guy's doing the raceing through thre streets of Sidney, where also gang members as the film makers where short on funds. If you like road movies shot at real speeds, no camera tricks this is the movie for you,a bit dated but some cool Heavy Metal on show,(Motorbikes that is).

Or Love Me If You Dare in this country.

Absolutely beautiful movie, which encompasses all the dark and twisted French fantasy you need for an evening's entertainment.

I caught this on the tube a few weeks ago, it was very good. Intense character study with a solid performance from young Christensen.

Glory (1989)

One of the finest films ever, a regular in my top 20, despite the fact it skirts close to melodrama and sentimentality in some instances. Yet it packs one huge emotional wallop throughout (thanks to Horner's serene score) that will have even the sternest of chainsaw wielders sobbing like a little baby. Denzil and Freeman steal the show from a highly impressive Broderick as Shaw, and the battle sequences are still impressive and brutal, with director Zwick likely to have influenced Spielberg's take on the D-Day landings in Saving Private Ryan. More importantly, in the final account of the 54th's certain death attack on Fort Wagner and the trials they had to go through to get such an opportunity to do so, it brings the concepts of slavery, freedom and sacrifice down to human scale. The closing image of solidarity and brotherhood provides a pitch-perfect denoument for what we've just witnessed, particularly following the rousing and climatic adrenaline pumping ending. Super stuff, and I implore everyone that hasn't already done so to go forth and find a copy to watch. Immediately...

I think Dark City starts off really well but goes downhill quite a bit in the second half. I'm kind of ambivalent/not at all keen on a lot of sci-fi but I thought that Cypher was a really cool, clever, stylish film. Not exactly unsung as it was quite acclaimed on release but seems to have sunk without trace since and nobody ever talks about it now.

What he said.
