Did love Sunshine, but how can you knock Slumdog? It was great. Not walk away singing the songs great, not brilliant, but perfectly acceptable, good fun to watch if forgettable. Sunshine was far more grisly and brilliant, and the end was outstanding, but it wasn't trying to be feel-good - name one feel-good film that isn't a little sappy and forgettable!

I've got to say, the effects so Sunshine are absolutely brilliant. Easily as good as effects in films costing twice as much.

I'm not knocking Slumdog, I liked it, though it didn't deserve an Oscar and I do think Sunshine is better. Yeah all feel goods are soppy but Slumdog is over the top....................................

....................... the coincidences are ridicoulous his life experiences being all the questions, and he ends up finding the girl but then shes captured by a gangster then she escapes and ends up with him. Of course its all so well made you don't really care about these things.

But the whole point of the film is that 'fate' angle. A little trite, and yeah, the film's forgettable (not now that we're discussing it ) but I think it did it slightly better than, say, any other feel-good claptrap.

Absolution is another brilliant little gem. I think it was with Richard Burton.
Have you seen Il Mostro (The Monster) with Roberto Benigni? Laughed so hard my eyes popped.
And that's pretty serious!




Fair play to you for giving Silent Hill 9/10 I thought I was the only person who liked it, its far better than most horror movies and I would list it as an unsung gem.


Other unsung Gems, not films that havent been heard of just films that didn't get the credit they deserved.

The Matador, Brosnan at his best, hilarious film.

Sunshine, most people think its another Armageddon so won't watch it, its nothing like Armageddon and relatively original as it turns out different to what you would expect.

Stranger Than Fiction, A brilliant heartwarming film with style and a great idea.

The 3rd was a good movie in my opinion. Two good performances by George C. Scott and Brad Dourif and a pretty decent story makes it an enjoyable film to sit through. Yes, its not perfect but worth a look if you havent seen it.

Stay away from part 2. It's terrible.

 Aah man, The Black Hole! one of my earliest cinema memories!
My unsung gem would be Human Traffic - especially if you are into dance culture or a raver, it just catches the whole essence of a heddy weekend perfectly and its got some great performances from John Simms and Danny Dyer.
I like it when the 4th wall is broken in films too and Human Traffic does this technique very well.

Yeh, good call on Human Traffic! Just refound it over the weekend, watched and loved it. Brilliant film, even for those who don't like or understand clubbing/raving. Like me!

Agreed - a brilliant film.  There's also a load of genuinely funny dialogue, mainly between George C. Scott and Ed Flanders.  And that nurse walking across the screen in the mid-distance - freaks me out every single time.

Another horror classic:


A very un-Hammer Hammer film with Christopher Lee as the only obvious link, and, coming so late on in Hammer's existence, pretty much forgotten - no grand guignol, no vibrant over-filtered cinematography, no heaving bosoms, no shaky sets, no cheesy over-acting.  Instead we get a 100% location shoot, an oddly yet fittingly cast Richard Widmark, stark cinematography, brooding low key performances and even a creepy looking hand puppet (which is much better than it sounds).

Now you are talking! Definitely one of my favourites. I remember watching it in a virtually abandoned cinema and yet nearly everyone I have recommended it to is glad they have seen it. It is a completely fictional account on the real-life Marquis De Sade's time in the Charenton Asylum, based on a live play. Geoffrey Rush became one of my favourite actors after seeing this film. It's full of quotable lines and great supporting performances from Michael Caine, Joaquin Phoenix, Kate Winslett and Billie Whitelaw. Definitely an unsung classic.

Swimming with Sharks is my nomination. Again, one of my absolute favourite films. Great dialogue throughout and a fable on the realities of showbusiness that every contender on "X Factor", "Britain's Got Talent" and every other reality TV show should watch.

Probably one of Bergman's lesser known or viewed works, this little gem is definitely not one of his weakest. There have been many films about the journey into madness, no doubt Aguirre being one of the greatest. The Hour of the Wolf tells the story of a painter weighed down by stress and haunted by visions of demons from his inner mind and his past. He is fighting a losing battle against his own mentality and as the film progresses slowly loses his grip on sanity or his artistic prowess. His wife tries to aid him and soon becomes a victim of the haunting images and ghosts herselfs and before long is a target of her husbands madness.
The film proposes the idea that the line between genius and madness hangs in a delicate dangerous balance at all times and is brilliantly plumbed here by Bergman with a result that is as dazzling as his highly regarded works. And fan of Bergman should watch this film!

agreed, hugely underrated movie.

I think the name 'The Exorcist' will throw alot of people, because this is basically a detective movie with an excorcism tagged on the end. It's a real good watch though.

Actually i enjoyed every movie in the Exorcist series.

im a sucker for 'creature features' so i had to pick this up when i saw it cheap.

Since watching i've read that the movie had some major marketing problems, it was promoted as a serial killer flick in africa with little mention that a big f'off crocodile was even in the thing. It appears to have harmed the movie, people hated it when they didn't get what they expected and it sank without trace.

The UK release (adding 'kill' to the title) and heavily promoting that this is indeed about a killer crocodile looks like it was an attempt to salvage something from it (straight to video in the uk).

However!! For a nights entertainment this is f'n great stuff. I'm serious. The movie comes across like a cross between Hotel Rwanda & Lake Placid (someones else quote, but i agree). It's a little more serious that you may think, but it's also a hell of a lot of fun.

Agreed! Ordered this on Amazon Marketplace and watched it last night -very enjoyable thriller, though the cover gives off more of a horror movie vibe which is not what this is.
