 I must bow my head and shamefully admit I never realized. I remember watching The Pit and the Pendulum which raised the hairs on the back of my neck. Wasn't it from the same director who made X - The Man With the X-ray Eyes, one of Stephen King's favourite horror films? (I haven't seen it but I bet it will be good). 
Wasn't there a The Masque of Red Death as well?

The Pit & The Pendulum and The Masque Of The Red Death,both Poe adaptations, are good,very suspenseful and gripping. YouŽll also find numerous hints towards Stephen King in In The Mouth Of Madness,King himself is a major Lovecraft fan,so it all comes together quite nicely.

Now I come to think about it... I haven't really seen ANY Lovecraft adaptations!
It's maybe because ALL of his stories are about devils or devil aliens. At least as I remember them.
Was The rats in the walls his? It was brilliant. I hope it's not Poe again!

Yes,the Rats In The Walls was written by Lovecraft.
If you havent seen Re-Animator by Stuart Gordon, you should check it out. Fantastic Lovecraft adap.

Yes,the Rats In The Walls was written by Lovecraft.
If you havent seen Re-Animator by Stuart Gordon, you should check it out. Fantastic Lovecraft adap.

I have just watched this for the first time since its cinema run and have been amazed again by this majestic motion picture. Make not mistake; this is a film. Combining old fashioned story telling with the best of modern movie-making Kevin Costner has created a stirring western that will surely (if there's any justice) only gain reputation as it ages. Duvall and Costner's chemistry recalls a mature Newman and Redford. Costner takes real and care with the characters and their situation so when the explosive climatic gunfight comes it damn well means something. And what a gunfight! Every bullet sounds like a roll of thunder. Every impact is felt. Coster and Benning's romance is charming and the cinematography is beautiful. Although it did well at the box office Open Range didn't garner much acclaim or awards. I don't know why. Perhaps it wasn't gay enough.

This is a great film indeed,a return to form for Costner. Filmed in beatiful,rich super 35 and sporting excellent production design,it moves at a sure-footed pace and the climactic showdown is very satisfying. DuvallŽs performance is extraordinarily good.

Never a better cast, never a better caper. Endlessly rewatchable.

Not a classic. But definitely a gem on its own terms.

May and Ginger Snaps to cover the horror genre. But also, how abou Beautiful Girls. Absolute modern masterpiece that nobody I know has seen. I'd also like to give a big up for My Little Eye, a truly great horror film.

 What about Guest House Paradiso? I thought it was a tremendously funny comedy, shameless and crass, yes, but very funny nevertheless.
But most reviews were bad...

 Some fantasic choices so far. Open Range is a particular favourite, a superb western. Re-Animator is also very good, I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and loved every minute.

The Spiral Staircase is one I keep meaning to watch. As I type, I can see a VHS copy I bought about 9 years, but I have yet to watch it 

I'd recommend The Music Man.


If musicals aren't you cup of tea then stay clear, but this is a fabulous slice of entertainment. Robert Preston is terrific in the lead, and the songs are a joy. Just try and ignore mini-Ron Howard and his singing.

Another little gem is Jump Tomorrow


It's similar in style and content to Sideways, and is just as heartwarming and funny. It involves an African-American travelling to his arranged wedding, who meets a suicidal Frenchman and a carefree Latin girl along the way.

And I have to mention (as I always do in this type of thread) two Australian films - The Dish and The Castle. Without a doubt, these are two of the funniest films of the last 10 years.

 One of my all time favourite films and had to pay through the nose to get it on VHS about 3 years ago.  Fun, feel good, well acted and so possible.....surely one of the greatest non-super hero superhero films.



And can I just say thanks a lot for putting The Music Man....being sarcastic...all i have going through my head now is 'I am the Music Man Umpa Umpa Umpapa Umpapa Umpapa'....GIT!

 I think Dark City starts off really well but goes downhill quite a bit in the second half. I'm kind of ambivalent/not at all keen on a lot of sci-fi but I thought that Cypher was a really cool, clever, stylish film. Not exactly unsung as it was quite acclaimed on release but seems to have sunk without trace since and nobody ever talks about it now.

The Reflecting Skin - Bleak and beautiful to watch and impossible to find on dvd. Though that may be because I havent looked that hard.

Simple Men - My fave Hal Hartley film and now that I've thought of it I must check its availablity as well. Amusing and thoughtful in equal measures.

Happy together - Its got Tony Leung in it, its directed by Wong Kar Wai, these two factors alone guarantee a good film and this is, though how good I am not sure. Would need to give it another spin. There are a couple of great heartbreaking moments in it.

Fortress - Another impossible to get on dvd, I remember loving this as a kid, its not the christophe lambert one, its the rachel ward one about the austrailian teacher who gets kidnapped with her kids. I havent seen it in years but I can surprisingly remember lots about it. Surely the sign of a good film!

I know its got Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio but when I speak with most of my friends hardly any of them has seen it! I think its one of DiCaprio's greatest performances and is such a wonderful moving drama! I can't help but put it in my top five films of all time because it just makes me feel like I 'wanna be a better person' everytime I watch it. It never seems to get the recognition it deserves!         5/5
