Was browsing through my soundtracks and I came accross a little unknown movie that is, in my books, excellent

The Red Violin

Can anyone recommend a relatively unknown gem of a movie. It doesn't have to be modern but so long as its good !. I am tad fed up of seeing the same Hollywood formula and would like to be surprised by your recommendations

 I did a thread a while ago,concerning one of my favorite horror/thrillers of all time,Demon Seed,released in 1977. I think it´s criminally over-looked. A suspenseful, night-marish techno-thriller. I highly recommend it, 5/5.

 man, that film really rocks! When I saw it as a kid it fucking terrified me.
And I though that I was the only one!  Haven't read the book though, because Koontz can be such a drag sometimes. He is really the poor man's Stephen King.

As for a gem... for horror, find In the Mouth of Madness, John Carpenter's best (yes you read right), with Sam Neil, about the power of the imagination. Oh yes, and there are a lot of twisty slimy things in it. And an ending to die for.
Do I need to say literally?
Absolution is another brilliant little gem. I think it was with Richard Burton.
Have you seen Il Mostro (The Monster) with Roberto Benigni? Laughed so hard my eyes popped.
And that's pretty serious!

Well,Bozo, the title itself is a play on the Lovecraft tale,At The Mountains Of Madness and the film itself is peppered with references to the Cthulhu mythos,but like I said,Lovecraft is not mentioned as inspiration.

 It's so much a Lovcraft inspired movie i don't think there was any need for Carpenter to point that out,also in interviews he has said what a big fan he was of H P as a kid.It must be required reading in the states as most horror movie makers from across the pond mention Lovecraft.
Hidden gem for horror fans The Beyond a must see 5/5 zombie masterpice.

 See, I would say Dog Soldiers, because so many people I know have neither seen , or heard of it, or if they have they write it off as a cheap looking film when it's actually fantastic, Brilliant acting, funny as hell and one or two decent shocks in it!

 Quills.
Its my favourite film but is met by blank expressions by my friends.
Very darkly funny, sexy, perverse drama based on the Marquid De Sade with Geoffrey Rush at his best.
also agree with Galaxy Quest...just so funny!

You mean Dog Soldiers : Fresh Meat? I dont really have high hopes for it,since Marshall is not directing,but on the other hand the guy who is directing,Rob Green, did the pretty good The Bunker a while ago,it was flawed,but powerful.

Terrific thriller, reminiscent of Duel but none the worse for it. And the presence of Paul Walker is compensated for by that of Steve Zahn

Weird, funny, and brilliantly shot and edited piece of work.

Burn! (Gillo pontecorvo) 1969

Great story of Brando as William Walker, later filmed with Ed Harris.

Raw Deal (Anthony Mann) 1948

Tough, simple little story with an incredible Dennis O'Keefe (underrated actor!) and equally good Raymond Burr.

 "You can count on me" was a terrific little movie. The little culkin lad (Not Macauley--Rory I think) is terrific in it

Also, althougth I am not Richard Gere's biggest fan Primal Fear is cracking slice of Courtroom hokum--Plus Ed Norton has rarely been better

The one for me though is "I Went Down" about two Irish crim's..........2 losers basically, Bredan Gleeson ins fantastic and if you know anything about Iirshors its fun cos you play the "Its your man from that thing" game !!!!

Freaked...

This delightfully stupid, dumb and ugly comedy comes from Bill S. Preston Esquire aka. Alex Winter and tells the tale of a moronic Hollywood actor selling out to support an evil toxic chemical company headed by William Sadler (aka Death from Bogus Journey), heading into the wilds he discovers Elijah C. Skuggs' Freakshow and is quickly mutated into the 'Beast boy', he soon meets the rest of the freaks led by Ortiz the Dog Boy (Keanu Reeves), there's also the worm, Nosey, Sockhead (Bobcat Goldthwait), Pinhead, Cowboy and of course the Bearded Lady (Mr. T).

This film is an absolute lowbrow work of sick, sick genius with absolutely brilliant prosthetic effects, especially the rastafarian eyeballs...

I highly recommend it.

Also, I recommend seeking out the equally twisted but equally hilariously brilliant...

So I Married A Strange Person



A Bill Plympton feature animation that tells the demented tale of a man who becomes increasingly weird, it is a sheer lunatic tour-de-force and features the ridiculously catchy song 'How'd You Get To Be So Cute?'  Absolutely wonderful.

 It's not that well known I think but it's a classic just waiting to happen - I adore this movie;
I cannot praise this film enough, basically it's the Waltons with a bitter dose of reality but I LOVE it; the casting, the storyline, it's a hugely underatted, inspiring movie!!

Why on earth would you think I was sarcastic? I was surprised and a little annoyed that the credits did not acknowledge H.P. Lovecraft when the film was awash with his flourishes. If you are indeed a Lovecraft fan like me,you know what I´m talking about. Then again,like Evil Bill said earlier,Carpenter had mentioned in interviews that he was a major Lovecraft fan,but I still didnt think it was enough. The film is widely regarded,among Lovecraft fans, as being among the best adaptations of his works however.

As for your example with LOTR/King Kong..pause for reaction..

I must bow my head and shamefully admit I never realized. I remember watching The Pit and the Pendulum which raised the hairs on the back of my neck. Wasn't it from the same director who made X - The Man With the X-ray Eyes, one of Stephen King's favourite horror films? (I haven't seen it but I bet it will be good). 
Wasn't there a The Masque of Red Death as well?
