I just finished watching the first episode of what's looking like a fantastic new show, starring Michael C. Hall (David Fisher in Six Feet Under) showing his versatility in a far different role. He plays Dexter, a forensics expert working for the Miami police. Flashbacks to his childhood tell of a nasty incident that has effected him greatly, and in the present, he has a second "career" kept secret from everyone he knows. For Dexter has homicidal tendencies, and seeks to make those who have escaped the law pay for their crimes. So far, it's looking like a very darkly comic show, and Michael C. Hall is fantastic. The music also reminded me a lot of Donnie Darko, though the show itself has no similarities to that film (thankfully for some I'm sure) and a very intruiging plot-thread has already begun involving bodies but no blood. You'll see. This is one that, along with Studio 60, I'll keep on downloading.

Saw a bit about this show on the imdb & decided to download it 'cause I loved Michael C Hall in Six Feet Under. I really liked it. Found Dexter really creepy at first but then he kinda started to grow on me, I like the whole anti-hero thing it's got going on. His dad was way understanding though, I mean how many people would let their kids to go forth and kill? (even if the victims did have it coming!) Looking forward to seeing how the storyline with the bloodless bodies is gonna turn out.

I love this show - the 3rd episode is available as a pre release at the moment. Michael C Hall is excellent and very different from his character in SFU.Good to see a couple of people from Oz in it too :) Has anyone read the books it is based on?

Yup, this shows is excellent as I said in the New Shows thread. I've never seen Six Feet Under so this is really my first exposure to the superb Michael Hall, I love these actor focused shows that are popping up like Raines. The woman that plays his sister is also excellently goofy. He kind of reminds me of Patrick Bateman in his emptiness, to a lesser extent. He has more emotion than Bateman being able to understand peoples behaviour more, but no real empathy. It's a really interesting character that you can sympathise with to an extent. He's almost a serial-killer superhero [:D] Seen the first 3 episodes now, hope the show is doing well in the ratings. He does seem to have the worlds most understanding father though, but its so well written it doesn't bother me.

I actually preferred the second episode, it was much better paced and entertaining. So far, one of the best new shows this season.

Episode 03: "Popping Cherry" Best of the lot so far imo. All the main storylines ran brilliantly alongside each other, with some very neat twists and turns to boot. And we got to see Michael C. Hall with messy hair![:D] So far, of the shows I'm downloading, this is the one I'm enjoying the most.

Tremendous third episode. They really drift skillfully between the storylines and each storyline is compelling. It's even pretty funny at times, particularly the juxtasposition of Dexter's actions and voice-over. Speaking of VO, I like the way that the characters aren't portrayed in the same way when Dexter's giving his account of things; the black cop (whose name escapes me) was more accentuated in the first episode when Dexter was describing him as has the Lt. The only complain is that the other forensics guy needs a bit more screen time, he's excellent. But all in all, a top, top show. And in Showtime's world it's doing well in the ratings so expect a second season. Denise Crosby's changed a bit since Star Trek TNG. [:D]

Wow - I just got round to watching the pilot. Excellently done and extremely well played - it must be to feel sympathy for an amoral character who is incapable of it! I hadn't realised it was based on books but it has clear influences - I saw a lot of the before its time Profit in it - particularly round the voiceover and amoral attitude. The relationship of a psychopath to foster parents (cop father, sick mother) is straight out of Carol O'Connell's Mallory books (Lindsays very much post date hers). The voiceover? Isn't it odd how much a functioning sociopath - viewing human behaviour from the outside and trying to replicate it - resembles the voice of the autistic boy used in Mark Haddons Curious Incident? Which I think Lindsay's books may also post-date. It was on occasion laugh out loud funny - I particularly liked the delivery of his line about fortunately he doesn't need to bother with search warrants. And the set-up of a 'game' with the other serial, very nicely done.

I've just watched the first episode and I'm impressed. This show is creepy but it pulls it off. I even found myself disliking the sergeant for hating Dexter!

Fuck me this show is brilliant! I love the Ice Truck Killer mystery and can't wait to find out the killer's identity. What makes things worse is that because it's based on the book I could find out the entire plot if I wanted to at the drop of the hat. It's taking all I can not to search!

Dexter has been picked up for a second season! Fantastic news. I wonder if it'll follow the plot of the book for that one... quote: The book is really only dealt with in the first and final episode of the series - it carries on through the series as one of the strands, but everything else is non-book content, so you wouldn't be spoiling the whole series. What storylines thus far are non-book content? And when does this start on FX? I'm looking forward to turning some friends onto it!

So, anyone have any theories on who the Ice Truck Killer could be? Here's a few: 1.) Masouka, the Asian forensics guy. He's quite creepy and would likely have the surgical knowledge needed to perform the amputations on Tucci. 2.) Deb, Dexter's sister. There was just something about the way she was depicted in the flashbacks that made me think she'd be willing to go to horrible lengths in order to finally play with Dexter. 3.) Dexter. Who's to say the ITK isn't a split personality of Dexter, acting out the fantasies Dexter can't due to abiding Harry's code. Doesn't really work out when you consider the head that was thrown at Dexter's car though... 4.) Harry, Dexter's dad. If only he wasn't dead! More likely it's just someone we haven't met, but that's no fun.

She looks up to Dexter but she's not exactly disciplined, plus she's just too lovely. 3 I like, something where we've been led the wrong way. Maybe Dexter just imagined his father encouraged him to kill, he seems way too supportive even for someone used to death. Or maybe the ice-truck killer is Dex's real father? It's someone with superior skill to Dexter, more experienced. Can't see it being anyone we know yet, much as I'd love that. Using the alias Patrick Bateman to get the anesthetic [sm=happy07.gif] I want to read the book now but don't want to spoil even the small details

Again, consistently high quality from episode 6. I hope it's not someone we've seen so far. I mean, if this was Nip/Tuck it would be Rita, but I think this show will play it straighter than that. Some good suggestions. I like the idea that it might be Dexter's real father - is he definitely dead though? I can't remember the details. For me, the best performance in the show is from James Remar. He's not an actor I'm terribly familiar with (beyond the anecdote about him being originally cast as Hicks in Aliens, oddly enough) but he's really great in this. I think they've possibly made Dexter a bit too sympathetic in a way - in the first ep he held this fine middle ground which suited the character, as it's progressed and because's it's always from his perspective I think they've removed that moral ambiguity that was originally there. Especially in this episode with the Christ like image from the boy's sketch description. Just a small criticism in an otherwise excellent show.

I was kind of suprised Dexter lost control so badly when he felt cornered, I was expecting him to be more cool, calm and collected. T'would be good if they shift Dexter back to a less palatable situation, like having to kill someone innocent to cover his tracks. He only just got away this time, things will get more desperate I'm sure. This is the first time we've seen one of his kills being investigated isn't it?

I had assumed it was Dexter's father, but obviously with him being dead it can't be.......there is no one I can see that fits the profile, unless I am not looking properly
