Im a huge Bond fan and have watched all of then countless times. Its hard to pick one out right best film from the
series because it has been going so long and each generation has a stand out. Love to watch them in order of
release, you get a great sense of the changing of the times, the change in film making style, acting, fashion,
music and science. So im going to pick my fav from each decade:
60s:
Goldfinger/Thunderball - hard to pick between these two as i love to watch them both. Both have Connery at his
peak, after Thunderball he just turned up on set but wasn't giving it his all. Goldfinger is the classic Bond that
created the template that the next 30 years of films tried to follow. The big bad guy plot, the sexy girl with a
funny name, the fashion, the gadgets, the car (the best in the whole series), the one liners, the music and great
theme tune. Thunderball is very much the same film which is why i enjoy it also but i have to say that from a film
making point of view the under water shoots are amazing when you think they were filmed in the 60s (can't wait to
see them in Blu-Ray clear goodness).
Also love From Russia With Love and OHMSS, but would go with the other two if i was on a desert island.
Worst film the 60s has to be You Only Live Twice, its just rubbish and Connery just wasn't interested by this point,
it gets through because of the Volcano part at the end which is so over the top its funny.
70s:
The Spy Who Loved Me - this film completely runs away with this decade, it has everything that Goldfinger had but
it is blown up to another scale, this was excessive film making at its best. As others have said its just fun from
beginning to end. Roger Moore was just right in this one, the style and fun that he shows in this film go hand in
hand with what the film was all about. And he was about the right age not to young like in Live and let die and
not to old like For Your Eyes Only onwards.
Also love The Man With the Golden Gun, I know others hate this and its a total cash in on Bruce Lee Kung-Fu films,
but for some reason i can sit and watch this any time and love every minute of it apart from how dumb Miss
Goodnight is and how crap the theme tune is maybe thats why this one is hated so much.
Worst film of the 70s has to be Diamonds are Forever, again Connery wasn't really interested by this point and was
only doing it for the rather large pay check he was getting. The storys rubbish and the camp and cheese factor are
on overload. Although do love the one liner:
"Hi im Plenty"
"But of course you are"
80s:
A View to a Kill/The Living Daylights - A hard one this as the 80s was the most dissappointing for the series. I
had to go with A View to a Kill for four reasons, 1 the theme tune is one of the best in the series, 2 Christopher
Walken is one of the best bad guys, 3 its a complete remake of Goldfinger and 4 it was the first Bond film i
watched. It does have its bad points though with a crap bond girl and Roger is way way way to old. The
Living Daylights is a highlight for me, never liked it at the time as most joe public don't either. Think this was
down to the fact that it was a complete change of pace after the Roger Moore films and i think joe public didn't
get it in the 80s and really wanted Bond to still be a little bit fun at that time. However i rediscovered it when
i got the series on VHS in the mid 90s and i have to say its a great film. Dalton is a great Bond, hes hard as
nails and you wouldn't mess with him. He couldn't do the one liners line Moore and wasn't as sophicated with the
ladies but lets be right, in a fight you would have bet Dalton would kick any of the other Bonds ass (it would be
close with Craig). Back to the film its got all the right things, cool car, sexy women(for the 80s anyway), twists
and turns in the plot, and some great action. Also i love the pre-credit sequence some great stunts on show and that
first full shoot of Dalton as he looks round at the other 00 been killed is cool.
Also love License to Kill.
Worst film of the 80s has to be Octopusy, its just boring, some daft story about eggs with no stand out action or
characters.
90s
Goldeneye - after a 7 year time out what a way to bring Bond back. Goldeneye was everything you wanted at the
time, great cars, girls, theme tune, story and bad guys. And Brosnan was very good in the part (although only in
this film, his other 3 films are a bit dull and by the numbers) he had the hard edge to him when needed like
Connery but also the sophicated and tongue in check of Moore when that was also needed. The openning stunt still
looks amazing today, and not a cgi pixel in sight.
Worst film has to be both Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough, after the great promise that was
Goldeneye neither of these came close and Brosnan was dull in both.
00s
Casio Royale - After the crap that was Die Another Day came this back to basics film with a new star in the role of
Bond. Its a great film that shifts along at one hell of a pace. Its pre-credits sequence is a great one and one
hell of a way to introduce a new actor to the series. The film plays with the Bond formula a little but the basics
are still there, the cool car, sexy bond girl, evil villian, great locations. Its hard to find any real weakness
with the film although it could be said it is a very serious film. And it has one of cinemas best (worst if you are
a man) tourer scences. Craig was also very well cast in this type of Bond film, hard as nails like Dalton and as the ladies say very sexy. Altough i have to say he doesn't look like the smatest of spys and he is a little gun ho, or maybe he is ment to be as he is a meant to be a newbie spy in this one.
Worst film has to be Die Another Day, what were they thinking when they made this. The whole thing is just one
big joke and Brosnan is poor in it also, he just made the character a one man amry that looked like he could never
actually be killed (i guess thats true of many of the Moore films but thats how things were in the 70s and 80s, by
the 00s everyone wanted a more rounded character with more depth).
Interesting that you criticise Die Another Day for portraying Bond as a one man army that could never be killed and praise his '' back to basics '' appearance in Casino Royale.In the latter film, Craigs Bond is seen as a one man wrecking machine and survives stuff that would normally kill a human being ( such as fallng from a considerable height and landing on his BACK during the free running chase, and pulling a big nail out of his back with no visible injury.Hes also seen as quite bloodthirsty and seems to kill everything in sight (particularly in QOS).
At least Brosnans Bond had charm and panache.I also disagree that Tomorrow Never dies and The world is not enough were poor.I thought they were easily the best of Brosnans outings.I think Goldeneye is every overated with some of the worst dialogue of the series.The score by Eric Serra is easily the worst of the whole franchise.
