DONOVAN KURTWOOD -> RE: The Best Bond Film? (26/2/2014 1:07:55 PM)

So recently I've been rewatching a few Bonds. I picked up Tomorrow never Dies and The World is Not Enough on Blu Ray as it's been years since i've seen them. I loved Tomorrow Never Dies but thought WINE was pretty weak to be honest. I think it's Brosnan's worse Bond, i prefer Die Another Day to WINE by quite a margin. Die Another Day is ridiculous but it's not dull.

Love Tomorrow Never Dies.Brosnan really came into his own as Bond in this one.The film is full of fantastic action, great Bond girls ( Wai Linn is one of the best ), terrific one liners '' Theyl print anything these days! '' and deliciously camp villains.David Arnolds score is terrific too.A huge improvement on Eric Serras terrible effort for Goldeneye. One small complaint though is that maybe the film had a little too MUCH action and the climax is a little too John Woo for my liking.

I actually think The World Is Not Enough is Brosnans best.It had just the right balance of a decent serious(ish) storyline, great action ( Boat chase, ski chase, mine shoot out, docklands battle ) ,camp comedy ( Dr Christmas: rocket scientist! ), and some of the most unique bond villains of the whole series with Elektra and Renard.

Die Another Day is indeed ridiculous but its still a lot of fun once you get past that awful cg surfing scene.

I actually rate Goldeneye as my least favourite Brosnan Bond.I still think its a fun adventure, but a little bit overrated.

Love both Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is not Enough which is my favourite Bond film ever. Have not rewatched Die Another Day have the Bond 50 Blu Ray box set just not really a fan of that film. However I did watch casino Royale, Quantum of solace and Skyfall last weekend really enjoyed rewatching them.

I just think with DAD another that on one hand it is the ultimate Bond movie in that it uses every cliche, every silly excessive moments, every one liner. It's just Bond to the max. Now i'm not saying it makes it a great movie, but it's an entertainingly ridiculous movie and is what you get if you try to consciously top every Bond film before.

I will give TWINE another go soon, i can't believe how disappointing i found it after TND. The problem is that the action feels a bit weak too, even though second unit seems to do the action on Bond movies, i would have put it down to the difference between Roger Spottiswoode and Michael Apted. The end fight between Bond and Renard in TWINE is just so pedestrian. I agree about Michelle Yeoh in TND, she's just fantastic and truly stands out amongst Bond girls.

Interesting about TWINE mate, I need to give it another go then. I just think it pales next to TND really.

I do need to give Die Another Day another go. After all Rosamund Pike is a much better Bond girl then Halle Berry.

Cool Breeze -> RE: The Best Bond Film? (28/2/2014 9:50:10 PM)

Everyone jumps on the excessive cgi of DAD but a lot of the action is done practically and done very well as always by the legendary Vic Armstrong. The hovercraft sequence during the pre credits is terrific and the ice chase between Bond and Zao late in the film is ace.Anyone who has read Armstrongs biography will know just how difficult and dangerous those sequences were to shoot.

rich -> RE: The Best Bond Film? (1/3/2014 12:03:09 AM)

Those two chases are very good but I still find the rest embarrassing. Some of the other things are bad ideas, executed badly. At least TWINE has that opening, the helicopters set piece, a staple ski chase and manages to provide some interesting moments with Elektra. That pipeline sequence is still really silly though.

spark1 -> RE: The Best Bond Film? (1/3/2014 1:36:06 PM)

the brosnan era was undone by the lack of elements/stories from the fleming novels/short stories.

rich -> RE: The Best Bond Film? (1/3/2014 1:59:36 PM)

I don't remember a time when, as a series, it was ever faithful - besides one or two movies.

not faithful but a lot of fleming's work ended up on screen and the 80s era brought bond back to earth after MR by using the short stories as basis for more realistic action such as in FYEO, OP and TLD.

the best thing about the brosnan era is pierce's excellent acting as 007.

spark1 -> RE: The Best Bond Film? (9/3/2014 12:21:55 PM)

"The great thing about Bond is that I have fifty years of movies 23 movies and all the Ian Fleming novels and short stories, all of which are fodder. And when Im working on the new Bond Im constantly going back to Fleming and the other movies what are the bits and pieces, what are the resonances?"-john logan

Hey hey hey lets not be slagging off A-Ha

You try listening to all the Bond openings they are like fresh air after a string of quite terrible songs.

rich -> RE: The Best Bond Film? (11/3/2014 6:28:45 PM)

The opening song to TLD is great what are you talking about. [:D]

The ending music is terrible like the end credits in Goldeneye.

Living Daylights wasnt a reboot. They just recast the part of 007 with a new actor.Casino Royale is the only time they have actually rebooted the series.

Living Daylights IS a great Bond film though.

Sorry, Rich, gotta disagree, bloody love this song, the most under-rated Bond song ever... and Chrissie Hynde has such a brilliant voice...

Opinions, the rest of you..?

Think he was talking more in terms of the direction of the story and character. Living Daylights is the closets Bond has come to becoming a romantic tale, yet still retained many of the core elements of the old films, it was a unique balance they pulled off. Living Daylights is in my top three Bonds.

As for the theme I think its decent, not one of the best, but far from the worse, also I do agree that Pretenders song was just the perfect way to end the film, simply lovely.

Yeah, Living Daylights is one of my favourites as well, although one of the reasons probably being that it was the first 007 I saw at the cinema. Dalton was a breath of fresh air after VTAK. It's my favourite Bond song as well.

OHMSS wasnt a romantic tale? The one where Bond fell in love and got married?

Agree with that.

I just wish Connery could have done that final scene of him cradling his dead wife... after all his womanising of previous films, to have him finally meet his true love only to see her killed... what a punch in the gut that would have been to behold...

No, because that ending felt tacked on. Throughout the film Bond had just been acting as normal, you didn't get the sense of relationship that you had in the Living Daylights or the romantic atmosphere.

Nonsense. It was pretty clear early on that Bond in OHMSS had fallen head over heels for Tracy. You truly feel that she wasnt just another conquest for him and he would give up the service to be with her.

Daltons Bond in TLD does care for Kara but shes just another Bond girl really.

At least one in Blofeld's institute, yeah. Goes for another one as well, I believe.

Doesn't he sleep with as many as he can and as fast as possible once he arrives at the institute? It never worked for me.
