As the number of Spurs fans have increased on here it's time to start a thread for the biggest team in north London.

The new fixture list has just come out and at first glance there doesn't appear to be any worrying fixture pileups like the end of last year. I wasn't feeling to optimistic until I looked through the list and realised I only thought of three teams being difficult matches.

We also have our first European campaign for quite a few years? First round again or will we actually get somewhere this season? 

And what about our recent transfer activities. Will sell Carrick? Or will we buy another ten midfielders?

I expect you to sell Carrick and replace him with 10 midfielders. 5 of them will leave in January and then about another 3 will leave next summer!

I'll be slightly harsh and say that though I think the Spurs team took large steps forward last year I think their final league position was slightly flattering for them.  I'd expect them to have more trouble holding on to 5th this year than challenging for 4th and 3rd. 

Fair dues to Spurs for holding out and out on the Man Utd Carrick deal.  I expect the manager doesn't want him to go, but at the same time knows that Utd are so desperate for a Roy Keane replacement that they'll pay over the odds for him. 

It'll be interesting to see what kind of season Lennon has and I hope for their sakes that they get a new striker.

Well I thought we bought Berbatov (which sounds too much like Rebrov for my liking). Yet there's no mention of him on the official site.

I'll have a look at the fixture list later when I have a bit more free time.  As for transfers, I think Carrick will probably go, Defoe I think may stay.  As for people coming in, I really don't have a clue at the moment.  We have been linked with Zakora who looks very good but I wouldn't want to part with too much cash for him.  It'll probably be another load of players who won't get a game and will be out on loan at some point.

We have bought some good young, players but the transfer policy really does need some tuning.  It's all very well buying young talent, but they need to play football and many of the players we bought in simply didn't get that.  I don't know if any of the guys coming back from loan will get any games.  I suspect a few will be sold, Ziegler, Huddlestone and maybe Routledge.

If I'm honest, I couldn't give a damn about the UEFA Cup.  I just can't get excited about it at all.  Very few of the better teams put out their strongest teams, and it has a poor format.

Well we have signed Zakora. Looks a good player but do we really need another central midfielder. Hopefully it won't mean selling Carrick or Huddlestone who I thought looked very good in his few appearances last season. I think we need to buy someone to play on the left as Jol doesn't seem to have much faith in Reid or Ziegler.

Spurs have won their first friendly, 2-1 against Bordeaux. Defoe and McKenna with the goals. Looks like a pretty strong lineup for the first friendly of the season.

Yeah, by all accounts it was a good game and a good result.

The Spurs squad currently only contains players who weren't at the World Cup, so we still have Robbo, Carrick, Jenas & Lennon to be added.
Defoe only started training on Monday as well.

Will be interesting to see how today's game against Nice goes.  Back to back matches is always a big test.

As for the season, I'm thinking we can win the UEFA Cup, but I don't think we'll challenge the top 4 like last season.  I think Chelsea, United, Arsenal & Liverpool will open even more of a gap.

I see this morning that Roeder wants Defoe at Newcastle...... won't happen as Jol wants him to stay put.

Won again. 1-0 with a weaker team than last night. Barnard got the goal. Ledley King played for the first time since his injury at the end of last season.

Another nice win last night, 2-0 against Celta Vigo, with Defoe bagging 2 in 2 minutes during the 2nd half.

Next up is a trip to St. Andrews on Saturday for a match against Birmingham City.

Really great start to pre-season. Especially good to see Defoe getting off to a good start after his England disappointment. Can't wait to see who starts up front when the season starts.

Dimitar Berbatov has scored his first goals for Spurs! Beating Birmingham 2-0 after half an hour. Keane and Defoe are playing as well.

That's 4 wins out of 4 now..... Stevenage to come on Tuesday, then Inter Milan on Sunday.

Interesting that we played 4-3-3 on Saturday, but I don't see that happening too often in the Premiership next season.

Once again, that result was WITHOUT any of our World Cup players!

The World Cup players are back this week I believe. Should be able to thrash Stevenage. Has anyone seen Berbatov's goals? They sound really good. I kept waiting for Sky Sports News to show them but as far as I know they never did.

5/5 now. 3-0 win against Stevenage. 2 more for Defoe and another for Berbatov. From reading the report could have been a lot more goals too. Interesting that Jol played all 3 strikers again.

It might work but I wonder if he'll actually use it when the season starts. I'm not sure you could use all 3 and Aaron Lennon in the same line up.

That might leave them a little vulnerable, I guess, but it would be nice to see a cavalier attacking side in the Premiership.  I should confess here that Spurs are my English side, thanks to Jol, so I hope they do well this season but I think they'll struggle to beat, or even match, last season's campaign.  Given the state of the UEFA Cup these days, however, they might be worth a punt in that competition.  After all, if Boro can make it to the Final, why not Spurs?

I think we've gone 4-3-3 so far because we're still without the spine of the team.
Robbo, Carrick, Jenas, Lennon & Zokora have only just returned to training, and none played last night.

I fully expect it to switch back to 4-4-2 by the start of the season, and probably even against Inter this weekend.
If Carrick stays, I suspect he may move into a more advanced position, almost in a diamond, with Zokora doing the defensive work.

That said, apparently Carrick has rejected a new deal and the sale to United will go through this week.  Jol wants Nedved in as his replacement, so could be:

I don't think we're done delving in the transfer market just yet, with a new right-back and left winger a priority.  The Sun claim that we're going back with a new offer for Downing.

Looks like a good team to me. Sounds like Assou-Ekoto is a very good player. I wonder how much Davids will feature this season. We have so many midfielders. I thought Tainio was great last season but he's another who may struggle to get many games.

I really thought Keane would start the season but after Defoe's pre-season I'm not so sure.

Downing is an interesting one. Apparently Middlesbrough have signed Arca today so they have a replacement if Downing was to leave.

Lennon's first game of pre-season tonight and back with a goal. 5-0 at half time.

EDIT Final score 8-1. Mixture of first team squad and youngsters. Dawkins got a second half hat-trick. Must confess I've never heard of him.

I wouldn't read too much into last night's result, other than the returns of Lennon (apparently his goal was classy) and Jenas.
The lad who bagged the hat-trick is an 18 yr old.

I don't think Davids will play much.  Ideal on the bench but don't expect much more from him.
Tainio is a very good player too, and Hossam Ghaly has been playing in the pre-season games.
Think we'll see some squad rotation in the midfield!

Just got home from work to find the happy news that Spurs have won again. 2-1 against Inter at the Lane. Obviously hard to tell much from just reading the report but good to hear of Tainio playing well. From the description his goal sounds brilliant. Once more the most interesting feature was the continuing use of 4-3-3. Looking more and more likely that will be the formation for the new season.

Tainio's 2nd was indeed a superb strike.
Sky Sports News had regular updates yesterday, showing the goals etc.

As for beating Inter's reserves - they rested their World Cup players, we still rested ours, so read what you want into that!!

Here's the line-up Inter put out:

Inter Milan: Toldo, Cordoba, Maicon, Zanetti, Stankovic, Samuel, Pizarro, Cesar (Choutos, 82), Marino (Solari, 46), Dacourt, Martins. Subs: Carini, Slavkovski, Bonucci, Fautario, Belajd, Andreolli.

Not exactly the weakest starting 11, although yes, they were missing the likes of Materazzi, Figo, Adriano etc.

Then again, here's the Spurs line-up:

Line-ups: Spurs: Cerny (Fulop, 46), Routledge, Assou-Ekotto, Huddlestone (Ghaly, 62), Dawson, Davenport, Tainio, Davids, Keane (Murphy, 82), Berbatov, Defoe (Ziegler, 72). Subs: Gardner, Barnard, Ifil.

No Robinson, Jenas, Lennon or Zokora......  In fact - Routledge as a right-back!

Either way, 8 wins out of 8 can't be scoffed at and Jol is still unbeaten against foreign opposition since he took over.  Last two games are away to Borussia Dortmund and then home to Real Sociedad.

Took my brother (a Spurs fan) to see the Inter match yesterday.  The 4-3-3, was certainly interesting to see, with Keane playing very deep.  The match to be fair was relatively uneventful, although there were some positives - Tainio's 2nd goal was a cracker, Ghaly (2nd half sub) and Berbatov both looked tidy and Routledge had his moments when he pushed forward.  The Inter goal was a bit weak though.  It would be fair to predict how they do on the strength of that one performance, which was just OK.

Despite the disappointment's of missing out on Duff and loss of Carrick (though for that much money, and with Huddlestone and Zokora ready to replace him, you have to admit that's a very good deal for us) I find it very heartening that both Berbatov and Zokora claimed to have spoken to 'higher status' clubs, yet still opted to come to the Lane.

I honestly think that of the 16 other teams in the league, we are best equipped to make a long term challenge to being one of the top clubs in the country.

First friendly today where we didn't win. 1-1 with B Dortmund in Germany. Berbatov scored again which is a good sign. I reckon he's going to be a star in the premiership this season. Hard to know how much to read in to the line up but seems to be back to 4-4-2 with Keane up front. Expect Defoe will play next week though just to keep us guessing. Lee played right back and I think that will be his position now. Still need someone to play left midfield.
