Miamus -> Actually.... (10/10/2013 7:33:29 PM)

As a Dane i must comment, that it is actually prounounced more with a single "V" as "Valdauw". But who cares, he is a brilliant actor and easy on the eyes :-)

steveofthedead01 -> But what about... (10/10/2013 7:52:37 PM)

Mads Mikkelsen? Is it Mass Mick-el-sen?

Arfpint -> Jennifer Ehle? (11/10/2013 2:10:50 AM)

Seriously, it's been bugging me for about 20 years.

gohansolo -> Ralph Fiennes (11/10/2013 4:28:05 AM)

Confession: For a long time I thought it was pronounced "Ray Fines".

gohansolo -> Milla Jovovich (11/10/2013 4:42:27 AM)

Watch The Fourth Kind. She introduces herself to the audience.

gohansolo -> Rachel Weisz (11/10/2013 4:46:24 AM)

I'm an American and I have never heard anyone call her Rachel Wuss. I've always pronounced it "Wice". Oops.

rachgal -> Marisa Tomei (11/10/2013 10:53:16 AM)

What about Marisa Tomei? I've always wondered how to pronounce her name.

aensre -> Actual Pronunciation (11/10/2013 6:07:39 PM)

This is the american way of pronouncing these names. Actually Famke Janssen in Dutch sounds very different. As well as Charlize Theron in South African or Jake Gyllenhaal as he mentioned on Conan is very different.

blaydon roth -> Grammar rodeo (11/10/2013 6:52:06 PM)

Does empire think it's readers did not get an education in the English language or this for the benefit of the American population, who for the most part would probably need an idiot card to sing along with their national anthem.
Although with a Welsh father and North Eastern mother I think I Qualify as bi-lingual lol ..I can even watch Geordie Shore without the subtitles

veers -> RE: Grammar rodeo (11/10/2013 10:30:42 PM)

Seriously, EMPIRE? The "Pronunciation respelling for English" system from American dictionaries? Aren't you an European, and for that matter, an international magazine, and should therefore use The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)?
Americans just have to stick doing things their own way, with their "US customary units", "American Sign Language" and this abomination that is not useful to non-native English speakers.

In my country, they started teaching us the IPA symbols on the third grade. And that was 30 years ago! Who knows how much earlier it had been introduced to the educational system.

For Example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlize_Theron

And the robo-voice? Sheesh, did nobody have the time to record a living human being pronouncing the names?

Disappointed, after 19 years of usually witnessing quality work from you.

I think it might have been prompted by some idiot comments about Saoirse Ronan - by UK posters, I hasten to add. [:)]

Grimm -> Zach (12/10/2013 8:42:54 AM)

Everyone gets it wrong everytime: It's actually Galeef-yan-AK-ees! Learn it!

waterboy -> No William Fichtner !? (12/10/2013 9:27:01 AM)

I wish you'd put an index of the 50 up on page 1. Would save me a lot of time!

alsybroth -> Interesting (12/10/2013 10:44:05 AM)

Now if someone could tell me how to phonetically pronounce Alejandro González Iñárritu then I'll be absolutely dandy

Weakling -> Charlize Theron (12/10/2013 5:46:23 PM)

Charlize Theron is not pronounced right in this list. Here is Charlize pronouncing it herself:

kinkykeeks -> Cillian Murphy (12/10/2013 8:27:49 PM)

Yes! A hard C. As an irish person called Ciara it can get really irritating when people either pronounce it as Sierra or spell it with a K

stilli666 -> Lindsay Lohan - Ali Lohan (13/10/2013 11:59:46 AM)

O. M. G.
That single is awful. Makes Cher Lloyd sound like The Beatles.

Oh, and how is Lars von Trier meant to be pronounced? And Carey Mulligan - is it like Cary Grant, or like Little-House-on-the-Care-y?

KingsX -> Rachel Weisz (14/10/2013 8:00:01 PM)

"Apparently the English all get this right and it's only Americans who end up calling her Rachel Wuss."

Where did you get that "fact"? I live in the U.S. and I have NEVER heard anyone pronouncing her name as Wuss. How would we get an "oo" sound from "ei"?

lauracalifornia -> Plot Spoiler for Gone Girl!!? (15/10/2013 12:40:14 PM)

Not everyone's read the book. Have you let slip...?

Okester -> Brendan Routh (15/10/2013 1:32:38 PM)

Like mouth or ruth?

crabman32 -> What about....... (18/10/2013 7:54:11 PM)

Tom Hanks. How the fuck do you pronounce that?

Pyrophobic -> (22/10/2013 12:15:11 PM)

The one name I really want clarified is Alfonso Cuarón. I've heard people pronounce his surname in all kinds of ways recently, and it was one of my biggest concerns when I gave a talk on Children of Men at a cinema some years back.

Concise_Statement -> I refuse to pronounce Arnold Schwarzenegger's name that way. (23/10/2013 12:53:20 AM)

"Ah-nuld Schvart-zenegger?!" Sounds like I'm taking the piss with a bad impersonation. I'll be laughed out of society.
