Saw it this week in cinema:

Only God Forgives
One word is enough to describe this new collaboration between Winding Refn and Gosling: hard.
It`s not a film that`ll be everybody`s cup of tea (more than one person left cinema early) but I thought it was an excellent film. A revenge film in wich nothing Winding Refn doesn`t shy away from showing filthy things or showing things half. Therefor, it is not for the weak-hearted. Because of the very low speed of the film, wich fits the sticky Bangkok climate very good, the images hit home very hard.
Kristin Scott Thomas steals the show. Even though Gosling is great as the leading man, it is Scott Thomas` performance that`ll stay with you.
It`s very different kind of movie compared to Drive, a film that only runs for 80 minutes but nonetheless will be stuck in your head for quite some time.

8,8/10

Very excited about this film. Seeing the split reaction (mostly verging on negative) only makes me want to see it more.

Mallory Holt -> Rrrrrrr rrrrrrrr rrrrrrr (27/6/2013 2:56:22 PM)

All revved up (see title) for this 'un. Loved "Drive" so got high hopes ...

tysmuse -> where's the review? (19/7/2013 8:08:21 PM)

the poster is already claiming that Empire has given it 5 stars.

kojaksmoneybox -> Biggest disappointment of the year (19/7/2013 9:50:45 PM)

How did it all go so wrong? A fearless director and the hottest actor around at the moment together so soon after their masterpiece Drive - surely it can't fail?

Only God Forgives is so pretentious and full of repetitive shots of hands and Gos slowly turning his head bathed in red light that it has to be considered arty...unfortunately at times it feels like it some sort of parody of Drive.

A bum note for all concerned - graphic violence, hardly any dialogue, extreme lighting and a Cliff Martinez score do not a good film make.

BabsyBuck -> (22/7/2013 12:19:37 AM)

I literally just finished watching it. It was such a disappointment. I'm so underwhelmed :/

JCR -> RE: (23/7/2013 12:18:49 AM)

It's so dull. Like Heaven's Gate dull. In fact that maybe being unfair to Heaven's Gate. The awkward dialogue and long periods of silence feel like it's being directed by a student who has seen Eraserhead a million times and is desperate to emulate it. To say it's a bad movie suggests it might have some entertainment value; it doesn't. It's not bad, it's just boring. Mind crushingly boring

If Empire really have given it 5/5, I can see that review being quietly erased- much like the Attack of the Clones review- sooner or later.

hjfleeds -> A complete miss (24/7/2013 12:49:45 PM)

Managed to watch it and it is not good. It looks incredible and the score is as good as Drive, but apart from that, it's hollow. The violence is ridiculously nasty and off putting, even for hardened viewers, and the characters are terrible. Gosling is given nothing to work with, and I love him as an actor but he's just not good in this film, while the rest of the characters are just unpleasant people. It's not quite as bad as most say, but it is pretty rubbish and incredibly disappointing; two stars at best.

JCR -> RE: A complete miss (25/7/2013 10:57:08 PM)

Empire have indeed given it 5/5. Damon Wise was the reviewer. Think the letters page of the next issue is going to be interesting. lol. [:D]
