it helps to make a break with past 'superman' movies and they can use 'man of tomorrow' as title for a sequel.

I think Chris Nolan suggested Man of Steel because it's to Superman what Dark Knight is to Batman so it gives the DC movies (or at least the ones he's involved with) a more cohesive feel.

Using a nickname also worked for the lead character of TDK.

And, Man of Steel, by being completely free of the word Superman, wont get lost among other Superman related material in search engines.

Story and marketing reasons for it not being called superman, as well as the S symbol already being well enough known for the symbol not to need the name attached.

Actually in sweden "superman" has always been called "Stålmannen" witch translates into "man of steel". So I think that the name comes from the Swedish name.
