AlmightyFace -> Retro Video Game Music Quiz (20/2/2013 3:19:51 PM)

There's a few here that are bugging me, so I thought a hints thread was warranted.

Level 3, Answer 5 is the worst right now.

James Dyer -> RE: Retro Video Gme Music Quiz (20/2/2013 3:42:24 PM)

You'll kick yourself...

Dominius -> RE: Retro Video Gme Music Quiz (20/2/2013 4:07:59 PM)

You guys are killin me here!!

I got 11/15 on Easy
8/15 on Medium,
And only 1 on Hard....

Is there an answer list somewhere?? Some of these are driving me nuts!! Songs I could sing before I heard them but don't know the blaaaaaaaa....

azazel_fallenangel -> RE: Retro Video Gme Music Quiz (20/2/2013 4:42:26 PM)

I did terribly, only really got the big famous Zelda, Mario and Dooms of the bunch.
Number 8 on Hard is driving me crazy though, what the hell is it!!???!!

James Dyer -> RE: Retro Video Gme Music Quiz (20/2/2013 4:43:19 PM)

Only 1 on hard? That may be telling about your age - some of them delve back to the 80s.

Pan_Box -> RE: Retro Video Gme Music Quiz (20/2/2013 5:00:04 PM)

Call me and my friends geeks but we found out every tune except 2, so i guess i could give you all some hints

Pan_Box -> RE: Retro Video Gme Music Quiz (20/2/2013 5:02:19 PM)

the 8/3 is from a playstation 2 game and includes a horse.

alsybroth -> RE: Retro Video Gme Music Quiz (20/2/2013 5:16:47 PM)

I hope you're not removing hints from posts Mr Dyer, otherwise how the HELL do we find out.

So far;
Level 1 clues;
1; Includes bonus levels beating up a car & barrels
2; ??
3; Chaos emerald
4; Everyone's favourite block game before Minecraft arrived
5; ??
6; ??
7; ??
8; The game is better remembered than the film its based on
9; Big Fucking Gun
10; Mushrooms & Coins
11; Get over here!
12; SNAAAAAAKE!!!
13; ??
14; The Amiga platformer that gave every kid nightmares. And it was impossibly hard as well!
15; The game series every dunce still thinks is the name of your hero and NOT the princess, ugh.

Any clues on the ones in this level I can't think of?

Hillsman -> RE: Retro Video Game Music Quiz (20/2/2013 5:22:12 PM)

Great quiz - but having never had a SNES, Amiga or PC, I am probably at some disadvantage! Current scores: 10/15 (Easy), 5/15 (Medium) & 6/15 (Hard). The thing with music is, either you've played the game or you haven't.

There is only ONE track that I know but cannot place - it is not a game I have played; I just know the music for it - Medium 9.

Cheers!

This is a great quiz, nice to see game music get a bit of the spotlight.
I'm slightly crippled by not having owned a console before the PlayStation and not playing many console games (PC forever etc.) but at an advantage because I'm old enough to have bought most of the others! (also, I'm a game music collector for my sins)

Don't worry, got it. Thank you though.

James Dyer -> RE: Retro Video Game Music Quiz (21/2/2013 10:29:01 AM)

Glad you're enjoying it. I rather enjoyed putting it together - oh the memories! Does make you feel old though.

James Dyer -> RE: Retro Video Game Music Quiz (21/2/2013 10:29:53 AM)

I did search high and low for the original 48k Spectrum soundtrack for Jet Set Willy and couldn't find it - the only omission I regret!

It was fun, though can any game after the PS1 truly be considered retro? Even the PS1 is pushing it, as that was the console that pushed gaming into the mainstream.

I must admit to being fairly disappointed at the absence of any music from the 8-bit computer genre i.e. Amstrad, Spectrum & C64. The latter features some of the finest compositions ever made.

And strangely, some choices are not really known at all for their music - Duke Nukem and Quake spring to mind. I completed both of those back in the day, but I cannot recall a single tune from either - perhaps because the music was not a prominent feature of those games.

Agree with your other comments, but on this it should be noted that Quake's music was one of its unique selling points, having been composed by Trent Reznor. There's more than a little Nine Inch Nails to the soundtrack, and even if you don't recognise the style it's a fairly evocative score. I think the Quake retail box even specifically promoted the fact that Reznor composed the music.

Interesting. Gone are the days where the composer would've been a selling point for the game! Though I bought more than a few myself simply because Martin Walker, Martin Galway or the Maniacs of Noise did the music!!

I do remember the Quake music being fairly ambient with rock elements kicking in from time to time - not sure if music changed depending on what was going on on-screen. It was music that suited the game as opposed to comprising any "signature" tunes that would identify the game outright.

I couldn't tell you that last game I remember specifically because of its soundtrack - probably Final Fantasy X and XII on PS2.

Navrone -> RE: Retro Video Game Music Quiz (22/2/2013 5:44:51 PM)

if you play them all at the same time it sounds awesome

Philed -> RE: Retro Video Game Music Quiz (22/2/2013 8:13:47 PM)

Maybe something wrong with my speakers but I can't make out what is being sung in #13 on easy!

Showcase Amiga platformer with astounding graphics (for the time - dozens of layers of parallax scrolling) and soundtrack by David Whittaker. Extremely difficult, though this was more down to fairly rubbish game design, unresponsive main character and a measly 2 moves.....both of which were cack.

retrophil -> RE: Retro Video Game Music Quiz (3/3/2013 11:57:30 AM)
