Rinc -> Favourite sounding footballer's name (3/2/2013 8:42:17 PM)

The Football Weekly lot have a conversation about this the other week but I felt they forgot some important examples of names you just love to say. I've always been partial to saying Mesut Ozil because it just sounds so great. So I spoke to my mate about this and we came to the conclusion that the Germans have the best names to say. My current favourite is Holger Badstuber. Just say it. Holger Badstuber. Lovely.

Anyone else got some favourites?

Bastian Schweinsteiger. It's just awesome and you can drop it into everyday conversation.

"I got totally Schweinsteigered last night"

"It was a Bastian of a burger."

Paolo Maldini is the footballer name equivalent of cellar door.

Professor Moriarty -> RE: Favourite sounding footballer's name (3/2/2013 9:04:57 PM)

Stefan Kuntz ..... Someone had to do it

Ruud Gullit. That freaky G sound, love it. In terms of current players, Radamel Falcao really rolls off the tongue.

Another good German one is Klaus Augenthaler.

Quint -> RE: Favourite sounding footballer's name (4/2/2013 2:54:32 AM)

Perhaps one of my favourite names ever and contender for sexiest man's name: Alessandro Del Piero.

Despite the fact this is the campest thread in Grandstand, I'll join in,

Ian Ormondroyd.
"sticks" will always be a legend in my eyes, so tall and gangly he made Crouch look like Warwick Davies, but he played with a smile on his face, scored some great goals and amazingly was never picked for England.
I made the last bit up. It's true, he never got picked for Enlgand, but there's nothing amazing about it.

Dean Windass!

Remember when they used to take the piss out of his surname on Fantasy Football?

The portugese goalkeeper Quim, y'know for obvious reasons.

Maybe showing my age but my favorite is still Jean......Pierre........Papin!!!!

Obviously you need the French accent to really make it come alive.

I love how much the real discussion on Grandstand has died over the years, we have a big match fixing scandal going on and no thread has been created, but a thread about footballers names you love to repeat to yourself? Yep we've got it. [:D]

That said I don't think there is/has been/ever will be a better name in football than Zinadine Zidane.

borstal -> RE: Favourite sounding footballer's name (8/2/2013 9:35:41 AM)

He's not a footballer and he's so much part of the game his name is overly familiar but just say it over and over.

Arsene Venger Arsene Venger etc

A name so good, they renamed the club so it would match. North London Rovers FC was always kind of boring.

AC Jimbo was discussing this so therefore it's fine. [8D]

I've always liked the name Papa Bouba Diop. There's something oddly calming about it. The same goes for Alexi Lalas.

Olaf -> RE: Favourite sounding footballer's name (8/2/2013 8:53:12 PM)

Luis Boa Morte

(also Portuguese - Abel Xavier)

Is that real?! That's beyond funny!!

Some good ones here - I agree with Alessandro Del Piero and Jean-Pierre Papin.

I quite like the French names, David Trezeguet and Thierry Henry (which I swear I heard Alex Ferguson mangle into Terry Henry during France '98).

There was a player for Cameroon during Italia '90 called Mackanackie (sp?), I was pretty young but I remember my mum shouting "Come on, Mackanackie!" at the telly with great relish during that tournament. Particularly when Cameroon played England. [sm=33.gif]

Being a Celtic fan I'll always have a special place in my heart for our Brazilian (not-quite-)sensation Raphael Scheidt. Though I suspect the Rangers fans got more out of that buy than we did. [:D]

How could I forget Jimmy Flloyd Hasselbank?
