Sway -> Nightclub fire kills over 200. (27/1/2013 3:41:54 PM)

Terrible news especially as something like this can surely be avoided or the impact reduced, by having adequate fire exits in places that serve hundreds of people at once?

Don't want to detract from the fact around 245 people have lost their lives though. What a horrible thing to have to experience.

The manner in which, apparently, it was started by a band setting off fireworks inside the building shows how avoidable the thing would have been. I know as part of fire awareness training at work they show an actual fire which occurred in New York a few years ago which almost mirrors this one by the look of it. It is a very scary thing to watch.

EDIT:

It was The Station Nightclub Fire
in 1990.

I have linked a video of what happened which is a very scary thing. If the mods think it too much feel free to remove the link. The US appeared to have learnt from this fire in much the same way they learnt from the Coconut Grove fire of the 1930's and hopefully Brazil will learn from this fire.

Sounds very much like the nightclub file in Bali (think it was Bali?) around 10 years ago.

Awful news, so many people killed so quickly. Makes you wonder what these fucking idiots are thinking setting off fireworks/flares in those kind of places.

Fucking hell. Just kids having their freshers' ball. Horrific.

Shocked when I saw this on the news last night. It beggars belief that this many people died in the fire. Absolutely dreadful.

It shows just how under developed a country like Brazil is and it really makes you worry about the Workd Cup and the Olympics.

How can we trust these nations to host big events when simple things like health and safety rules are so flimsy/non-existant? That a place of that size with that sort of capacity could get away with only having one exit is horrific.

RIP to all those who died and thoughts go out to the families of all involved.

Although at the same time, as I pointed out above, almost exactly the same thing occurred in the US 20 or so years ago which is not that long ago. That being 6 years after they had the Olympics. Something like this occurring sadly seems to be the impetus for countries to take control of their health and safety laws.

It is one of those things which shows that although people moan about "Health and Safety gone mad" (as certain media sources like to stir the pot) without Health and Safety this sort of thing would possibly be a common occurrence.
