Timon -> Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (23/1/2013 10:25:57 AM)

In the battle of 'Die Hard In The West Wing', we have:

In the BLUE CORNER - Olympus Has Fallen: Antoine Fuqua directing Gerard Butler as the secret service agent protecting Aaron Eckhart's POTUS.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwx1f0kyNwI&feature=share

In the RED CORNER - White House Down: Roland Emmerich directing Channing Tatum as the secret service agent protecting Jamie Foxx's POTUS.

Behind the Scenes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxNxqwRo_9c&feature=youtu.be

So which will win in the BO Battle?

All I'll say is that if not one of the POTUS's says "Get out of my house" before blowing the bad guy out of the back of the Oval Office with an RPG, I'll want my money back.

porntrooper -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (23/1/2013 11:31:21 AM)

I have to say, I think Emmerich will win this one. I think of the two, White House Down will more likely nail the 'stupid concept but fun action' feel, Olympus Has Fallen looks to be taking itself a little too seriously, and has more of an Under Seige feel than Die Hard. The thing Olympus has in it's favour is it's supporting cast (Morgan Freeman, Angela Basset, Cole Hauser, Aaron Eckhart) but I really dont get along with Butler when he is doing his odd yank accent. I suspect WHD will be bigger and have a bit more fun with the concept.

DONOVAN KURTWOOD -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (23/1/2013 1:25:14 PM)

Olypmus Has Fallen looks awesome based on the trailer. Will have to hold fire on White House Down until i see a trailer. But Emmerich delivers way more than Fuqua so i'm guessing i'll end up enjoying White House Down more.

Timon -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (23/1/2013 2:42:01 PM)

According to Fuqua, Emmerich has him 'out-budgeted', so it'll be interesting to see how the two compare action and scale-wise.

DONOVAN KURTWOOD -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (23/1/2013 6:26:14 PM)

I kind of wonder how much scope for big scale action there is with these kinds of stories. Olympus has some awesome looking exterior stuff with the planes etc. so here's hoping Emmerich has some even bigger stuff to deliver!

OPEN YOUR EYES -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (24/1/2013 12:47:08 PM)

Looks..shit.

edit:
Just seems like a typical America "f*ck yeah!!" action film.Sure they'll be wounded but ol'Gerald Buttler will save the day, killing every terrorist in sight no doubt.

Well.... yes. It's Die Hard In The White House. Of course, that's what will happen!

MonsterCat -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (24/1/2013 12:57:08 PM)

If Gerard Butler doesn't kick a terrorist down a pit after saying: "Terrorism? THIS IS AMERICA!" I'm going to be bitterly disappointed.

Well.... yes. It's Die Hard In The White House. Of course, that's what will happen!

But Bruce Willis can atleast act.[:D]
Plus this film looks to be full of American chest-beating patriotism wank.
America is obsessed with terrorism.

Yes,I will be avoiding this film.

Wiki-synopsis:
North Korean terrorists led by Kang take over the White House and hold President Benjamin Asher hostage, threatening to execute him if the U.S. government attempts to retake the building. Mike Banning, a former Special Forces officer recently removed from the Secret Service for failing to save the First Lady in a car accident months prior, finds himself being the only one capable of confronting the terrorists and saving President Asher.
[sm=happy07.gif]
The terrorists have little problems in dealing with the US army of Defense but ,clearly, the Terrorists are no-match for an angry, damaged S.S Scotsman.
Per-lease.

I think with films like this, such as Air Force One, a slight suspension of disbelief is required.

True, but how can you watch something like this which has been ,frankly, done to death in various other films, books, games.
This is a extremely lazy production.Little to no originality. It just seems like throw-away tosh.

DONOVAN KURTWOOD -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (24/1/2013 1:35:45 PM)

if you're not inerested, why bother posting in this thread? Just to tell everyone how lame you think it will be? Seems like a waste of time. The plot is no worse than many great action movies.

MonsterCat -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (24/1/2013 1:37:34 PM)

Throw away tosh is fine if it's at the very least half-way enjoyable.

Exactly, and it's too early to say whether this will be or not.

Unfortunately true.
shamefully stolen,but:
Why so much panic for the president?

It's not like we can't get a new one, only takes a few minutes.

He'll, there is a long line just in case.

Terrorist," give me my demands or I'll kill the president!"

US, "Go ahead, we got plenty."

If you agree, then you must be open to the fact that this could be a kickass action movie and a lot of fun, rather than writing it off based on the plot alone. I agree, the concept is daft, but that's what makes it fun!

The plot of Face/ Off is incredibly stupid, however it's an awesome action movie!

Yep,I enjoyed Face/off but (as in the title) it has originality.
This seems like it doesn't.Look,I know I come across very smug and ignorant on this but I generally would like to see films have something original and fresh in them and at this moment in time this doesn't look like it has any.

See,when I see the trailer for this I look at it from the point of hyper American patriotism and the more political condensations of America's paranoia with terrorism.I just dont see "action film".

DONOVAN KURTWOOD -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (24/1/2013 6:54:05 PM)

Not at all, you don't come across as smug and ignorant. I agree that one could say face/ Off had a more original concept, very true. I can understand where you're coming from. I guess i look at the 'Die Hard on a....' kind of movie as a sub genre of the action movie in itself. I mean, Under Siege is an awesome movie but is just Die Hard on a boat. This has the novelty of the White House being a main location for the action. Maybe you'll enjoy it when/ if you get to see it!

Im afraid both these films look badly cast throw away tosh of the highest order.

All movies are entertainment. End of.

If you want real life go watch documentaries.

I go to the movies to be entertained and so, yes, I can enjoy movies which are a bit daft like Air Force One. I defy anyone not to secretly enjoy that bit when Harry Ford kicks Oldman with that line.

Timon -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (19/3/2013 11:55:20 AM)

Reviews on Olympus Has Fallen indicate it's a better Die Hard film than the last two Die Hard films! And it's a hard 'R'.

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/olympus-has-fallen/24872/olympus-has-fallen-review

Booyah! A grown up action film! Snap their necks, Butler!

DONOVAN KURTWOOD -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (19/3/2013 7:31:20 PM)

awesome! cant wait to see it

elab49 -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (19/3/2013 8:20:18 PM)

Any review that uses the word 'impressive' alongside 'Ninja Assassin' can't be that trustworthy, surely? Not even if it uses the word impressive as if the thesaurus has gone AWOL [:D]

Cool Breeze -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (19/3/2013 9:58:41 PM)

24 beat both these movies to the '' Die Hard in the white house '' concept a few years ago in season 7.

Qwerty Norris -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (19/3/2013 10:21:42 PM)

The trailer for Olympus Has Fallen is absolutely hilarious.

Even though the inclusion of Butler is something to worry about, here's hoping it delivers on its "stupid but fun" premise.

Didn't know Emmerich was helming a similar film until I checked this thread. He's usually reliable for destroying stuff though... [:)]

elab49 -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (19/3/2013 10:29:19 PM)

I'm looking forward to Emmerich's more. I'm intrigued it's the writer of Zodiac tbh.

paulyboy -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (20/3/2013 11:43:07 AM)

Looking forward to these, I've always enjoyed the likes of Air Force One, as stupidly stupid as it was!

That said, I was watching the Olympus Has Fallen trailer the other day and spent the entire time cursing that it wasn't the latest Die Hard flick. You could have pretty much have transplanted A Good Day To Die Hard into the White House scenario. John's son is part of the secret service (instead of the CIA) and get's old dad a tour round the White House as a favour (let's pretend their relationship is fine at this point), whilst McClane is there all fucking hell breaks loose.

Could have made for quite a decent, albeit extremely hokey Die Hard flick that! Instead we got that mess in Russia, which I can barely remember it was so utterly forgettable!

Timon -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (20/3/2013 12:34:59 PM)

From what I've read, Olympus Has Fallen has quite a limited budget, but throws everything on the screen.

I'd be interested to see how White House Down (which I've read has almost triple the budget) looks in comparison. Also, it's not going to be as 'R' rated as this one.

Will be very interesting to compare the two. But like I said, all I want is a rollicking actioner in the vein of Air Force One. And if not one of the POTUSs says "Get out of my house" before blowing the bad guy out of the back of the Oval Office with an RPG, I'll want my money back.

Private Hudson -> RE: Olympus Has Fallen/White House Down (25/3/2013 11:00:40 PM)

Why oh why can't we have Harrison Ford as the President in the White House being attacked by terrorists in a sequel to Air Force One? That was such a cheesy but enjoyable movie. I recall waiting to get the coach home from a lads holiday in Greece when it came on in the pub. Due to our impending flight home and many lagers, it was a brilliant experience. People were shouting at the screen the way you did when I was a wee lad.

And the bit when he utters the now immortal line, brought the house down. It seemed then as now like a riff on Ripley's iconic line at the end of Aliens, but had grown men cheering, whooping and hollering.

The Greeks were wondering what the fcuk was going on, but then again, I don't think they'd argue too much with a dozen sozzled Glaswegians.
