Chief -> I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 10:07:33 AM)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21034942

Horse meat (and pig) found in "beef" burgers sold in UK and Ireland supermarkets.

I can understand the cross contamination of pig if they are used in the same processing plant, but horse in a place that it shouldn't be?

Have we found Shergar?

Professor Moriarty -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 10:10:23 AM)

I kind of suspect that if the public were more aware of what parts of a cow were in the rendered "meat" that are used to make cheap burgers, they'd be pretty happy that there might be horse meat in there instead [:D]

I had a horse kebab a couple of weeks ago at a farmer's market. Was quite nice.

Chief -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 10:17:11 AM)

It wouldn't really bother me if I'd eaten horse, I just can't shake the image of some money changing hands then a van full of old race horses getting fed through the chipper. [:D]

Professor Moriarty -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 10:19:08 AM)

I think the story is that the meat may have come from countries where horse is eaten. Sadly not as exciting as old Neddy being taken off in the glue van and dropped off at the back of Tesco's.

UTB -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 10:32:57 AM)

All part of a stable diet /coat

Whilst looking on Twitter at the responses I cam across a 'pop-up restaurant' who sell 100% Horse burgers (their tweet was "30% horse meat? Pah! Ours are 100% horse meat"). Marvelously, their website is....

Brilliant. One of the better horse jokes I've seen.

great_badir -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 12:08:09 PM)

I actually really like horse meat. Our Tesco used to sell it, but they stopped years ago. Not sure if it was because of public reaction, or just cos they didn't sell much of it.

Given the burgers in the story were also sold by Iceland, I'm guessing we're talking really shit quality frozen burgers.

I heard it about 4 times on Twitter yesterday.

Does that mean it's not funny though? Nay.

Why? Is a close relative a horse? I had horse in France many years ago too.

How do you hear a joke on Twitter?

I was once shown by a butcher at my work what goes into a lorne sausage. He said once I seen what actually goes into them, I would never eat one again. He showed me a box of offcuts from beef, bacon and anything they would have thrown away. It didn't faze me at all, lorne sausages are one of the yummiest breakfast foods there is.

Looks like no one is too outraged by this, which is a good thing I guess. It could be just cross contamination from imported meats.

I also like a good Lorne.

But "sausage" is a legal definition now. Obviously some indie butchers (and no doubt many many many dodgy halal establishments) ignore it, but otherwise in supermarkets, proper decent butchers and eateries, if something is sold as a sausage, the only meat it can contain is pork leg and/or shoulder. Obviously cheap sausage which are listed as sausages will just have a lower meat content and fill the void with fat, rusk and/or breadcrumbs, but there should be nothing else in there which is questionable.

Something sold as "bangers", though...that's where lips, eyelids and bumholes come in.

Super Hans -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 12:49:25 PM)

Man, I had a wicked idea for thread title pun when I read this story, but it would seem I really need to be up with the larks if I want to be first in there![:D]

sanchia -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 12:49:55 PM)

The thing is, if someone eats Italian salami they probably are getting a good proportion of horse meat in there. You don't seem to get complaints about that.

Super Hans -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 12:51:36 PM)

And now there's a new scandal: Supermarkets are removing packs of veggie burgers from their shelves since traces of uniquorn have been found...

DancingClown -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 12:51:45 PM)

I suspect foal play!

Again, that generally only occurs in halal salami. Any PDO or old world salami makers (basically any salami named after its region of production) would be quite offended at the mere suggestion of any meat other than pork being included, by accident or otherwise, unless we are talking cured meats made from something other than pork - bresaola for instance.

blackduck -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 1:36:35 PM)

not too bothered that horse meat was used, had horse burger before twas alright (but I'm guessing the the mrs is going to he horrified).
I am concerned that the supermarkets are selling stuff and they have no idea whats in it.

Ever since all the foot and mouth stuff supermarkets and butchers have been going out of thier way to tell us about the traceabilityof thier meat.
Not only do they tell us what country it came from it's not unusual now to see name and photo of the actual farmer and a little bit about his life story.
Sure they could be a bit vague about what par of the pig it came from but once it tasted ok I didn't worry too much. It's a bit of a worry though when they don't even know what animals they're using.

Chief -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 2:21:33 PM)

I wonder if they could be saddled with a lawsuit?

Woger -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 3:37:42 PM)

Aldi horse burgers aren't too bad, but my Lidl pony ones are better.

Ghidorah -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 4:30:05 PM)

I'm wondering if the horse meat was used as a supplement. Many horse owners are finding it difficult in keeping them because they cost a lot to keep and our economy is in a mess. Horse owners are selling them onto random people just for a few pounds. I wouldn't be surprised if someone in Ireland found a way to create profit by buying pet horses on the cheap and selling them on as cow meat.

Rebenectomy -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 5:14:31 PM)

Don't think Tesco are too worried, apparently since the news broke their burgers have been flying off the chevals.

Hood_Man -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 5:28:08 PM)

Horsebond, lol.

I agree.

Although I have to say, since hearing about this incident, the majority of responses I've seen or heard have all been "so what?" about it all. Who are the angry ones and what are they getting angry about?

I'm a complete carnivore myself, and one of my favourite restaurants is a Mongolian BBQ place that serves kangaroo, ostrich, springbok, zebra, wild boar and many others. I don't think I've ever wittingly eaten horse (although there was that plate of meat I got in Russia after just pointing at something on the menu which was highly suspect), but I certainly wouldn't say no.

I eat burgers from everywhere and anywhere - knowing that half of it isn't even actual meat. It's never caused me any harm, and I really don't worry about it.

Looking at it from an animal cruelty point of view - I wouldn't like to think of any animals unnecessarily suffering to make my food, however if I was really that concerned about it, I'd stop eating meat altogether. Which...hahaha.... is never going to happen.

borstal -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 5:47:29 PM)

The amount of humour on Facebook over this has made my day, really, just can't stop laughing......

superdan -> RE: I Could Eat a Horse (16/1/2013 6:01:38 PM)

I genuinely don't get the fuss, unless it's over a trades descriptions thing or whatever. People have no problem eating beef, and a cow is the horses fuck-ugly idiot cousin.

Zebra has been one of my favourite meats ever since I first tried it. And that's just a horse in stripey jammies.

I wonder what the ass is to a horse [sm=33.gif]
