Groovy Mule -> I, Anna (28/12/2012 11:33:45 PM)

A real disappointment.

It feels a bit ITV1 on a Sunday night, maybe it's the familiar London settings such as the Barbican or maybe it's the crime drama whodunnit plotting. It might also be because last time I saw Gabriel Byrne's hangdog expression, it was in Channel 4's political whodunnit Secret State.

The plot centres on Anna (Charlotte Rampling) who is persuaded to get back out onto the singles circuit after she splits with her husband but whose foray into speed dating ends with her waking up with a broken wrist and her conquest lying dead on the floor. Gabriel Byrne (and a criminally underused Eddie Marsan) is charged with investigating the case but finds himself drawn to Anna in his investigations.

First time writer-director Slocombe's screenplay is the weak link in this film. Arguably the film shows its hand too early signposting the identity of the killer far too early whilst the implausibility of the actions of Byrne's detective eventually become so that you are taken out of the film altogether.

4/10
