Cool list, I've not seen everything there but I loved rust & bone, the raid, headhunters and young adult. Cabin in the Woods is a bit of an omission though.

luke.R -> the master? (20/12/2012 7:57:19 PM)

where is the master? where is it empire, you must have made a mistake! Luke

Pelle -> 2012 sucked (20/12/2012 9:18:16 PM)

Well this feature shows that 2012 was pretty bad year for movies if shit comic book adaptations and jigonistic anti-islam propaganda gets to be in top 3.

Jimmyduudah -> What a load of horses**t (20/12/2012 9:32:58 PM)

I mean, where the hell is Cabin in the Woods? An excellent movie. And we get Chronicle in the list? Bollocks. I quite liked the first of the Nolan Batman movies and the second wasn't bad but the Dark Knight Rises was a pile of poo. The choreography of the fighting within it was crap. Anne Hathaway has to be the most unconvining fighter ever to have appeared in screen. The way she moved looked like she could not fight. CRAP.

nc_jj -> (20/12/2012 9:35:45 PM)

So I don't see neither 'The Master' nor 'Cabin in the Woods' anywhere, but I do see 'Chronicle' and, even worse, 'The Avengers' atop. Where the hell is the world coming to?!

rulookn atme -> (20/12/2012 10:08:52 PM)

what no master utter bullshit

rulookn atme -> (20/12/2012 10:10:47 PM)

amazed the hobbit didnt make it!!!!! the way u suck up to jackson

mosley909 -> dark knight rises and skyfall in top 5??? really!! (21/12/2012 12:08:12 AM)

have they actually seen the dark knight rises or skyfall or had the writer of this list just decided they where good before they saw them?
DKR is a mess and in need of some serious re writes, it comes acoross that nolan was just rushing through it so that he could get on with other projects. it would have been absolutely slated if it wasn't for the quality of the two previous films!!
as for skyfall, well the last hour was more obssesed with giving winks and nods to old films rather than making a quality new film film, ended up been a mess not much better that die another day. the best bond ever, it not even the best daniel craig bond, casino royale was miles ahead!
im happy avengers assemble was top though, best summer block buster ive seen in a few years, didnt try and go try and go dark just becuase it is in fashion, was simply a good rollcoaster ride of a film!!

Normal Control -> Dredd (21/12/2012 12:25:37 AM)

Dredd 3D is missing. From the number 1 spot.

JohnChard -> RE: Empire's Best Films Of 2012 (21/12/2012 3:47:55 AM)

As usual there's the standard ream of complaints and everyone touting their favourites, but It's actually a decent list containing a lot of very good films.

Personally I hated Young Adult and would have to consider The Grey and Killer Joe before contemplating a film only held together by Theron's work in it. The Dark Knight Rises isn't even the best Nolan Batman film in my eyes so that would be way lower on my own twenty. Avengers Assemble I absolutely loved, watched it three times now and I'm very impressed by how the director has managed to blend so much and keep the film honest, it's pure blockbuster fun. I'd be finding place for The Woman In Black as well, expectation of a period boo jump shocker is delivered in spades there, while The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a beautiful film.

My number one would be Skyfall, which unsurprisingly for a Bond film is proving divisive :-) It isn't the best Bond film of all, but much was riding on it and to me Mendes and the team have delivered a quintessential Bond for the "new era" he finds himself in. Whilst they also give the nostalgists something to home in on.

Is it the best film of 2012? To me it is, to many many others it isn't, but lists are a personal choice and getting bent out of shape about someone elses choices is a futile exercise. But that's just my opinion of course. [;)]

moviemandan77 -> Raided (21/12/2012 7:15:18 AM)

Two things - Avengers should not be No 1 on the list (4 or 5 maybe) and The Raid should be much, much higher!

sasebobs1138 -> Dear god... (21/12/2012 9:54:06 AM)

Of ALL the films that came out in the past twelve months... You think Avengers was the film of the year????!!!! Sweet jesus. Is Empire being run and edited by a bunch of sugar fuelled 11 year olds thesedays? It was like watching power rangers crossed with transformers. A two hour plus toy commercial with a team that has secret one-direction member Chris evans as their leader. I Havent felt so embarrassed to be in a cinema since Batman and Robin. Downey jr should also learn that theres a fine line between being cocky/charismatic and being what his portrayal,as ever, leaned more toward,a smug oily bastard.

guysalisbury -> I was convinced.......... (21/12/2012 10:35:55 AM)

..............that Shame came out in 2011, but looking back I was totally wrong, as are Empire for not having it on this list. Shame was an incredible film! Also, I can not believe that Lawless ididnt make this list. Its violent, funny, clever, brilliantly acted. I still cant quite get my head aroung Avengers being top. It was so average. 2012 top 5 - TDKR, Shame, Lawless, Looper, Young Adult.

chrisgibbings -> (21/12/2012 11:34:03 AM)

Avengers Assemble and the Dark Knight Rises wouldn't be anywhere near my top twenty, both over rated rubbish in my opinion! My top five would be...
1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
2. Skyfall
3. Argo
4. Battleship
5. Man On A Ledge

davidrobbo -> Errrrrr (21/12/2012 12:33:12 PM)

No Silver Linings Playbook? No End of Watch? No Ted? Come on Empire; must do better!

shady_88 -> Ha, ha, ha, hi, he, ha (21/12/2012 3:08:31 PM)

Avengers better than Amour? Avengers best movie of the year? Who voted here? Children??
Fynny list, worthless but funny

tylerseven -> (21/12/2012 3:50:14 PM)

"Avengers" best film of 2012 ???
As we often say in France: "le ridicule ne tue pas" ("being ridiculous doen't kill you").

AdamlyAWESOME -> Why The Dark Knight Rises Stands Alone. (21/12/2012 3:59:56 PM)

The Dark Knight Rises has been used as a comparison-piece for everyone who was immaculately impressed by The Dark Knight.

This should be a theme that ends quite quickly for the sake of the objectivity of this great film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

Tom Hardy and Heath Ledger are both wonderful. Their work ethic is in the vein of the human spirit, triumphing with each effort in their respective canon of work.

Since Heath Ledger passed on, many people believe there is no possibility behind having a person portraying such a character with a brand new freedom with creativity.

This act of creativity is spread all over The Dark Knight Rises' cast and crew. The creative forces behind The Dark Knight came back to Gotham with a fury to prove why Heath Ledger's performance had sparked a spiritual fire within us all that was acknowledged entirely in the performances captured on film in the third installment of The Dark Knight Trilogy.

For a further investigation into the power of The Dark Knight Rises, please feel free to read my web log at Adamlyawesome.tumblr.com. I don't advertise for the sake of advertisement, the relevance is obvious. My blog entry titled, "Why The Dark Knight Rises Deserves A Best Picture Nomination" will likely gather some minds in agreement. Hopefully, BAFTA will acknowledge the intellectual and artistic merit that everyone has yet to identify. Thank you.

Ace Rothstein -> THE MASTER??? (21/12/2012 4:04:17 PM)

Empire, how could you not include the Master? You gave it five stars.... what a startling omission!!! Admittedly divisive but an should be an automatic entry into the top ten given the sheer ferocity of Phoenix's central performance...

And the Avengers number one?!! What a populist decision, could you not be more bold and not cater the fanboys? It was a very admirable accomplishment to give the disparate superheroes equal screen time and it was great fun but number one film of the year? This is a shocking list!!

ped420glasgow -> Terrible (21/12/2012 4:35:17 PM)

This list is truly terrible. Avengers at number one is a joke, and the master and the hobbit's absence is astounding. This is why I may soon be converted to total film.

TheMovieAddict101 -> OH DEAR... (21/12/2012 9:09:57 PM)

Empire? Were you paid by Marvel for this list? Avengers being at the top is a joke, an easy choice for you to make. Life of Pi should be much higher, and though I understand opinion articles like this will always divide opinion, Avengers should no way, ever, be at No. 1. Ever.

clarkkent -> (21/12/2012 9:54:27 PM)

Dark Knight Rises is the third best film of the year? YOU HAVE TO BE JOKING. And Avengers as film of the year? I LOVE that flick, but film of the year? Looper should have been higher, and Cabin in the Woods should have at least got a mention.

willkillyoulast -> Hilarious (21/12/2012 10:35:55 PM)

Not the list. The comments. They range between 'Interesting list, here's mine" (and those are my favorites, yay for respectable etiquette on a respectable site), and then there's "But this is ridiculous, I don't even KNOW these, where's all the REALLY POPULAR movies I call bullshit!" and then there's "THIS IS NOT THE SAME LIST I MADE. YOU ARE WRONG. YOUR OPINION IS WRONG. YOUR INCLUSION OF *movie title* IS WRONG. YOUR WHOLE EXISTENCE IS WRONG." Y'all need to chill the fuck out. See how other people use the comments to state their differing viewpoints minus the balls out rage? Learn from them, petals. That or just shut up. It's incredibly annoying. (But hilarious.)

Pat86 -> (22/12/2012 1:06:25 PM)

Decent list, not all to my taste mind you I would have gone
1) Seven Psychopaths
2) Killer Joe
3) Argo
4) Untouchable
5) Ted
6) Avengers
7) Skyfall
8) Moonrise Kingdom
9) The Master
10) Silver Linings Playbook

Clingfilm -> (22/12/2012 5:38:06 PM)

Funny to see all those pretentious twits getting their knickers in a twist over having some popular movies at the top.

Morteus -> Come on chaps... (23/12/2012 11:31:01 AM)

... I don't agree with some (well most actually) of these choices, but this list isn't definitive, just the opinion of Empire employees. They aren't wrong, just... misguided.
