I've always felt like doing a thread about this so here we go! There are a lot of famous games that I've either never actually played or didn't like enough to put in this list (KOTOR, World Of Warcraft, Final Fantasy series) and there will be a few games that will probably just beguile people, but these are just games I've thoroughly enjoyed or wasted much of my life on. Also there is no real ordering and I'll probably exceed 50, I just couldn't think of a better title [:D]

Metal Gear Solid (1998, Konami, PSOne) The game that really kicked off my love for more serious games in general. Before I played MGS one night long ago, I mainly played Mario games, Pokemon games or random assorted games like Mortal Kombat on the SNES or Goldeneye on the 64. This was the first game that showed me that games could have cinematic qualities and not just be mindless distractions. I'm a big Metal Gear fan in general nowadays and there will be another game from the series up ahead on the list at some point.

Yay, a list [:D]. I know I'm probably in the minority but I could never get on with Metal Gear Solid. I actually preferred the 2nd game, when the game allowed me to interact, but on the whole I'm not a huge fan of the series. I haven't played the third or fourth though.

It's the one of the two MGS in the franchise I truly loved. Then it went amusingly bizarre, then very good even if occasionally bordering on the severely melodramatic, then became a poorly-written mess with some hitches of good gameplay.

Big fan of Metal Gear Solid, although I'm not sure I'd replay it but it was nice to go back to the location in MGS4.

MGS2 is the most underrated in the series, I actually prefer it to Snake Eater. The first MGS is still my favourite though probably, though MG2 (Solid Snake) is quite brilliant as well. (That said, there's about four games in the Super Mario series better than MGS.)

Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990, Nintendo, I played it on the SNES but it was released on NES) I absolutely love this goddamn game. Other then Super Mario 64, probably the Mario game I played the most as a kid. I played it recently on an emulator and it still holds up fantastically. I've still got my SNES copy and my SNES somewhere, I really should bring them out soon, because just talking about Super Mario Bros. 3 makes me want to play it.

I spent so much time on those classic Mario games on my SNES. They're just timeless and way ahead of its time.

A gaming list? Awesome! I've only played MGS 2 and 3, and gave up on both. I got sick of sitting around doing bugger all half the time while the labyrinthine story happened. I might come back to them at some point, the HD collection's made it a tempting prospect. I've never played Mario 3. I love the original NES one to bits though.

I loved the first two MGS but just couldn't get on with Snake Eater. There was quite a gap between playing 2 then 3 and for some reason I just didn't like stealth games anymore. Even now, after playing Deus Ex Revolution for an hour, I hate sneaking about in games, sitting behind a box for 10 minutes watching guards walk about. It just gets on my tits.

Super Mario Bros 3 is amazing. I think Super Mario World is a better game but only incrementally. SMB3 absolutely blew me away when I first played it in a way very few games have since.

Yeah SMB3 is absolutely amazing from start to finish, I can't even begin to imagine how many hours I have spent playing it down the years.

Cool list idea. I was actually thinking of doing something similar. Loved MGS when it came out - so many classic moments, 'Ohmigod, he's moving my controller with his miiiiiiiiiiind' 'the codec code is on the back of the game box' (this one buggered me the first time though as I was playing a copied verison. NO BOX!)- great game. The sequels, not so much, As for Mario, I was a Sega kid so don't really know what made SMB3 any different from the other games.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002, Rockstar Games, PS2) The better half of my pre-teen to mid-teen years have been dominated by Rockstar Games. I can name at least 6 games they've released that I've played religiously on many different consoles but it all started for me with Vice City. It not only boasts one of the greatest soundtracks evah, but the neon-drenched streets, crazy Cuban and Haitian gangsters, porn stars, and outrageous missions and side missions kept me entertained for a very very very long time. There may have also been a time where after playing this and watching Goodfellas that Ray Liotta was my favourite person on the planet. Oh yeah, I forget the voice acting cast. Tom Sizemore, William Fichtner, Luiz Guzman, Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper and Fairuza Balk to name just a few. Bloody, bizarre, over-the-top and most importantly, fun as hell.

Vice City is fantastic, I have fond memories of just driving round listening to the soundtrack.

Yeah I still think Vice City is the best GTA, certainly the most fun, which is what those games should be about really. Stonkingly good soundtrack as well.

GTA doesn't get better than riding around on a Harley as the sun sets over Vice City with Billy Jean blasting on the radio. The RC helicopter level is the single most frustrating mission in any of the games though.

I loved the story, the music (intro theme, Rex's lair, Sniper Wolf etc), voice acting (well, for the most part), and just the overall emphasis on stealth (it came out around the same time as Tenchu, which was another fucking awesome game). Vice City is a good game, but it's not the best GTA imo (cue VC/SA war). San Andreas edges it for me- varied environments and gameplay (jetpacks ffs), story, voice-acting. In fact, didn't make a list of our favourite games? I don't think we went into any detail about why we ranked the games the way we did.
